I went to college in Louisiana, and one semester I took a Louisiana Ecology class. A couple weeks in, we started talking about nutria, and I had no idea what the prof was talking about, so I raised my hand and asked. He looked at me a little funny and said, "You're not from around here, are you?" I told him I was from New Jersey, and he laughed and said, "That explains it, anyone else not know what a nutria is?" About seven or eight more people raised their hands. He thanked me for not feeling like a dummy and asking, and we had a quick 2-minute lecture on the nutria before getting back to business.

IN 1957 I lived with my aunt and uncle on the Rockefeller Preserve in Grand Chenier where my uncle was doing research on Nutria, their breeding and spread. On a daily basis we went out in the swamp where my uncle had live traps set up where we tagged and recorded them and marked their locations on the maps. My uncle had a Chesapeake Retriever named Belle and old Belle used to love to chase Nutria, the only problem being that those big teeth would tear poor Belle up and we would have to take her back to his lab and stitch up her lips after each Nutria fight. One day we turned a Nutria loose and Belle took out after it. Belle chased that beast in a big circle right back to us, where the Nutria stopped when he saw us and turned back on Belle. So here we are, Belle and the Nutria biting and screaming and this eleven year old fool decided to break up a dog fight with his bare hands. I reached down between Belle and the Nutria, and the Nutria bit me, right through the web of my thumb on my left hand, and those big old chisel teeth went straight through and just stuck there. So now instead of just Belle and the Nutria screaming add in an eleven year old kid who is screaming and peeing his pants in pain trying to shake off a Nutria that really doesn't intend to let go. And once we got me loose from him and he ran off, we took me and Belle back to my uncle's lab and stitched us both up with my aunt and cousins present for moral support and my uncle telling me that if Belle can take stitches in her nose and lip without screaming and crying, I can take stitches in both sides of my hand. Actually the thing that really hurt was the alcohol and disinfectant before the edges were cleaned up in order to do the stitches, and NO anesthetic!

During breeding season, the nutria gather in large groups and are especially hard on the flo'ton or floating marsh plants. They'll eat and breakup this valuable part of the marsh/swamp environment. The Cajuns have succeeded in convincing people to eat crayfish, frogs and alligators. Once the chefs cook up an appetizing menu item composed of nutria the problem will be solved.
