Selena was every Latina that grew up “American”, for a little while. I’m a third generation Latina who didn’t learn Spanish. For several reasons. Parents chose not t speak the language. Grandparents learned English and wanted to communicate that way. Minus the food, I grew up very Americanized, or at least learned the culture of the community I grew up in. If Selena didn’t have the music I almost feel like she would have been one of us - the latinas that are always latinas but because we don’t speak Spanish or maybe are not consumed with the culture of our background we aren’t accepted.
