Fruit was never meant to be 12 months a year in the supermarket. They were seasonal and humans ate them according to their natural flourishing cycles which were relegated to certain seasons of the year even when irrigated agriculture was developed. Fruit are nature's dessert.

On Saturday, I'm invited to a bbq. I'll be bringing my own sausages and "mode of consumption (keto friendly bread). A couple of comments related to this video - one is that there’s a wide spectrum between having three fruit smoothies a day and a handful of blueberries. It would be more helpful if you could provide some recommendations somewhere in the middle ground between these two extremes. I have one fruit smoothie every morning with half a cup of blueberries and 4-6 medium/large strawberries and one fruit at lunch. I have suffered none of the stated effects of high fructose consumption. I have seen lots of videos decrying fructose and fruit consumption but most meta-studies I’ve seen show a positive correlation between eating fruit and lifespan/healthspan. Also, there’s generally a documented benefit to eating blueberries and apples (not the super-sweet variants out today). My other comment on this video is you list some studies supporting your claims, which is great - but it would be more helpful for you to actually summarize the studies in terms of quality and results and point to some of the key findings (beyond just the general claims you make). I believe part of the problem is you have to consider when and how fruit is being consumed - e.g. with protein or fat or other carbs or by itself. There’s also a gut component as you point out - lectin can be digested in the gut with a proper micriobiome - this component needs to be considered imo.

This is so true. I suffered from gout for over twenty years. It wasn't until last year that I heard a doctor say that sugar interrupts the kidneys' ability to break down uric acid in the blood. Before that I was the smoothie king. Few people ate/drank more fruit than I did. I always thought "it's natural sugar so it can't be bad." Big mistake. I would go to the doctors in horrendous pain in one of my big toes or a knee and they would ask me what I was eating to cause such severe gout. I would tell tell them mostly fruit, some salads, a little bit of chicken or fish, and sometimes a bit of red meat. They would tell me to stop eating the meat, and always said, "fruit is fine." I've had gout attacks every single year since 1999. In 2014 I had two horrible gout attacks each lasting 90 days. No medicine worked. I was eating mostly fruits and grains, absolutely no meat, thinking that was good for me. In 2017 I had a particularly bad gout attack - both feet, I couldn't walk. I had to be brought to the hospital via ambulance because I literally couldn't put any weight on my feet. Things were that bad because I figured I would "flush the uric acid out of my system." How? - By drinking lots and lots of fruit juice for days at a time. Now I cringe at that. I can't count how many times I had a gout attack the day after having one of my mango/banana smoothies or eating a big piece of watermelon. But I never made the connection because every doctor I ever saw told me "fruit is fine, meat causes uric acid." Also, I lived in Central America for 9 years. I was in tropical fruit heaven, or so I thought. I ate so many mangos, papayas, bananas, and a dozen other tropical fruits that I'm sure damaged my liver and kidneys. I started getting gout at the age of 38 in 1999. I'm 60 now. I regret eating so much fruit and drinking so much fruit juice. When I was thirsty I never drank water - I would drink apple or coconut-pineapple juice. I don't touch the stuff now. No more smoothies, no more watermelon, no more grapes, no more pomegranates, etc. I don't miss fruit one bit and believe fruit is overrated by many people. I read a book in the early 1990's entitled, "Fit for Life." The authors extolled the virtues of eating fruit. Over the years the authors (then husband and wife) did not do well with regard to their health. - No wonder, they ate lots of fruit. That book was not the reason I ate so much fruit, but it did reinforce the notion that fruit is good for you. It's not. In fact, the fruit today has much more fructose than it did just a hundred years ago. Humans have not been eating these sugar balls for hundreds of thousands or millions of years. This is a recent introduction to the human diet. The only fruit I will eat now is an occasional apricot. Unless people have had it, they don't understand how painful gout can be. And mine was particularly bad because of my ignorance. I wish there were more doctors like this one; he understands how destructive fructose is.

They are all the same. They contradict him without ever substantiating evidence to strengthen their claims or weaken Dr Berry's claims. Some go so far as to say that he is making it up or providing the opposite. Then they go so far as to say that anyone who reports their personal progress is somehow wrong because they learned that anecdotal information is arbitrarily invalid for some reason. My understanding is either they have a vested interest in ensuring that we keep eating the very foods that make us sick or they loathe the fact that we are taking matters into our own hands and making the choices to reclaim our health. Historically speaking, a certain political group has had a huge problem with us eating meat, especially beef, even though they themselves routinely eat beef as well.

When eating vegetarian my Triglycerides and VLDL were within normal 'conventional' ranges. Since going Paleo Triglycerides are now close to 60 (optimal) having dropped from 97 and my VLDL was lowered from 19 to 14. I learned the hard way that plants can harm health. First I noticed that bread was not agreeing with me and my doctor tested for Coeliac disease aka Celiac disease. While I did not test positive for Celiac he strongly suggested I go gluten free for 3 to 6 months to see if my stomach pain ceased. It did in short order so I've been off gluten for 10+ years. I noticed that many people I know who had also 'cleaned' up their diet and went 'vegetarian' were still struggling with health issue. I went on to identify 'Nightshade 'foods (main ones are tomato, potato, eggplant, peppers (not black pepper) and paprika (made from peppers), high histamine foods, lectins, oxalates and salicylates were all causing me symptoms. Bottom line I learned that all foods have pros and cons to each individual person's system and it is best to keep learning and experimenting to see what foods and food plan will fuel each person the best. That being said, I believe diet while important it is way down on the list of more Important health factors. For cutting edge health information I also follow the work of neurosurgeon, Dr. Jack Kruse MD I think this is Dr Kruse's order of importance. 1. SUNLIGHT and LIGHT - Taken in the correct ways! 2. Circadian Rhythm Light viewing behavior has the biggest influence on Circadian Rhythm. We need to get bright light into the eyes first thing in the morning, Sun and then full spectrum lighting. It does two things it triggers healthy levels of cortisol which promotes wakefulness and the ability to focus throughout the day. It also sets a timer for the onset of Melatonin the sleep hormone to be produced later in the day. Melatonin is inhibited by light. So, by viewing morning light these two timers are set, the one, for wakefulness which begins at once and one, to produce sleepiness later after sunset. Natural blue light early in the day is what you want 2 to 10 minute minimum up to 2 hours maximum is optimal! 3. DHA 4. Limiting blue light 5. Water (spring water) 6. Sleep 7. Cold 8. Psychological Stress 9. Exercise 10. Diet ........................> I'd like to know what Dr. Ken D. Berry's top ten are! I personally have two more criteria on my top 10

How many people even open the description, let alone clicking on the links or reading the research. @@TerriblePerfection I don't know why you think that makes you weak. Are you overweight? I would say that people can get way too anal with this stuff. Consider this, "Oooo! the liver processes fructose like it does alcohol! That's sooo bad!" Now consider this: It's about quantities. Your liver is there to deal with these things and is quite a large organ for this reason. It's also very resilient and regenerates surprisingly well. How much fructose is required to equal say, a shot of vodka in terms of liver impact? I think you'd find you'd need to eat more than a few apples to level up with that shot. Some people also drink a BOTTLE of vodka for many years before they develop herpatic issues. If you're fairly healthy, the fiber and other goodies in apples are going to way more help you than do harm. They weren't lieing when they said an apple a day keeps the doctor away and even three wouldn't be that bad.

Then when I look around and notice that both my parents at the age of 84 and 74 are actually junk food addicts and sugar addicts. Their English are not good enough to watch your channel. So I have to tell them what I've learned so far. You can imagine how hard it is to change their habits. My 74-year-old mom is losing memory and I really believe that sugar is the culprit, as especially heartbreaking for me in the this summer while visiting her and spending a month living with her and her memory has deteriorated to this degree since a year ago. From what I've read on the subject it seems the amount of fructose most people have to consume to see negative effects is higher than implied in this video. 1 cup of strawberries has about 4 grams of fructose. 25-40 grams of fructose per day is totally safe for the average person and even those with fructose malabsorption seem to be ok if they stay under 25g. It doesn't seem like fruit is a serious problem for most people. As long as you don't do anything crazy like go on a mostly fruit or frugivore diet. I do agree there is legitimate concern where honey is involved especially if you are consuming both honey and fruit.

Not sure what it is exactly yet (my doctor doesn’t know and I’m waiting to see a neurologist) but my research tells me I may have had a silent stroke. Doctor said well of course not that's not enough time to see any change. The greens were good for me but to get the juice palatable, I was putting in a pear or an apple. And it was an apple the size of a softball. No fiber, just the sugar water. Plus I loved juicing beets. HUGE sugar intake. I still have the juicer and plan to use it juice lemons until it wears out. I slice the lemons in half and put them in with the zest. The juice is extremely colorful has lots of flavor. Doing this also wears out the juicer so when it breaks, I won't buy another one. Two years ago I started eating keto and have been on that diet (many failures, but didn't give up) since. My allopurinol ran out about the time COVID hit, and I wasn't able to get my prescription renewed. I have had gout twice so far (darned ice cream and HFCS). This video reminds me of an argument I had recently with a lady from work. She’s clearly suffering from fatty liver, pre diabetes, and a myriad of other health conditions. However, she dons a disingenuous smile all the time, whilst eating bananas throughout the day. The argument was regarding the fact that eating a snickers bar is the same as eating that banana. She scoffed at the notion, and tried to tell me that her bananas are simple carbs that the body digest better. I retorted that, sure, that may the long term case when it comes to absorption of nutrients and digestion, however, the initial insulin spike and pancreatic response is still the same. This was met with passive aggressive anger, as she continued to smirk in the most insecure of fashion, and unprofessionally started to dismiss me at every cost. Let this be a lesson to those suffering from obesity and delusional thinking. Fruit is not your friend. Just remember, you can order a happy meal and I’m sure there’s a few vitamins in there too. To be realistic though, are the vitamins in fruit worth it to you for the taxing it does to your body as a whole? Think about that. The lady from the argument is probably 210 pounds, 5”4, and looks 65 in her 30s. Do you really want to be the person saying “fruit and candy bars are not the same at all”?

When the COVID-19 pandemic first got bad I put together a big pantry and stockpiled a lot of food: lots of oatmeal and raisins, dry soups and dry beans of all kinds, lots of brown and white rice, canned veggies and potatoes, pasta and tomato sauces, and many jars of peanut butter, along with many cans of salmon and tuna. Months later I get on a Keto diet and lost 15-20 pounds from where I had been stalled out, unable to lose more weight and even regaining some on a DASH diet, eating lots of fruits and veggies, chicken and fish made and extended with white sauces. Now I have all that food and can't eat most of it and what hurts is that the price of getting it was dear to me. I do have some bags of frozen mixed berries and I like to eat a few of them frozen after a meal and it really seems like a treat. I once would have laughed about eating so few. My philosophy about going Keto and Carnivore is to not allow the perfect to become the enemy of the good so overall I think I am doing it well. The only fruit I eat now are those berries and I can limit myself to that amount. I love carbs but they don't control me and I am able to limit them.

Having been an individual whose hgb a1c was in the prediabetic range for many years, the inclusion of fruit...dried fruit...raisins, cranberries, apricots and the large consumption of apples, watermelon, melons, peaches, and pineapples put me on a crash course of severe unhealthy existence. The elimination of fructose in the quantities that I was consuming and the institution of a low carb diet was the U turn in my health.

I reached and have maintained my weight loss goals for 2 years now. From 250 down to 185 or less. I did this largely using your methods. BP down and off the meds. I believe this saved my life because I caught the coof. It was a tough go. If I had been fat and high BP, it may have well killed me. When I got off the sugar, my arthritis also subsided to a point that allowed more exercise. Now I work out, eat mostly meat, fast once or more a week, feel and look good (nothing like wearing twenty year old clothes) and my life is good. I do however, eat apples. 1 a day or less. This does not seem to affect my weight or anything else. For the most part, its the only "sugar" I am getting. So according to you eating apples ,a high sugar fruit, is not a good thing. You and my wife (shes an RN) basically saved my life. I pay attention to and research everything you say. Looks like an apple a day does not keep the doctor away. What the heck. This life style is a journey. Oh well, you have been a blessing to me and my family. I cannot thank you enough for the info you put out here.

The pain was so bad! I learned so much about fructose then, and I was surprised to see that HFCS is found often iin sauces and dressings and marinades. (Read the ingredients!) Obviously, we know soda pop has iit, and many are aware that ketchup does too. I need to be careful to avoid and not feed that bad bacteria in my gut. Thank you, Dr. B

First, let me say I appreciate your advice and consider it helpful. For me, when it comes to my residual love handles and fatty liver, keto alone did not do it … and I started strictly 2 years ago. Carnivore alone did not do it, started 1 year ago. Mind you I have been on the same workout for a few years (biking, yoga) When I made my carbs a day only fruit (an apple, blueberries), along with Kefir, in the summer of 2022 I started noticing amazing energy for workout and sleep and mental clarity. I also switched to one table spoon of honey in my coffee in the morning. I keep my two meals a day (10am to 6). I am 49 and had a high liver panel even in my 20's. My recent bloodwork and liver panel has never been as good in my life as it is today. In fact, my last wellness checkup in the fall showed the best liver panel I have ever had as an adult. My doctor is floored. In fact, I was born with a heart problem I had fixed and never got better than 130/90 on Losartan. Now, my blood pressure is 121/78. My doctor told me that it would take eating a 100 grams of fructose a day to hurt my liver and an apple only has 6-8 grams. A month ago I eliminated all seed oils from my diet and I am now noticing muscle growth I never had before. My family are astounded! I look and feel better than I did in my 20s. I get what your saying but CarnivoreMD and Dr. Anthony Chaffee are on to something. Strangely enough my arthritis has disappeared. Fruit over plants helped me and did not increase my craving. Chances are if you are always hungry you are intaking seed oils and processed foods that you think are keto friendly. Finally, I will add that the reason that you doctors are all helping us is because your basically teaching us not to eat everything all at once 24 hours a day. That is the biggest problem with America … everything cheap and fast at any hour of the day. My belief in God, I do believe he gave us some fruit and plants to eat … just not with a sedentary lifestyle.

Generaly they didn't used to eat alot, they were active and loved socializing till they died but they used to ate a lot of fish, drink a glass of wine two three times per week and ate a lot of fruits also almost everyday. I cann't prove it but in my experience from what i saw and ate in the US when is was there the problem isn't the "food" per se but the food you have there and most importantly the way you live in general.

The fruits of today are nowhere near close to those that our grandparents had. Today industrial production made apples and oranges to fell like candy. I still remember the taste of oranges 30 years ago in Greece and they closer to a lemon today. That said, I generally disagree with the Dr. Berry, it sounds like he puts all fruits to the same basket, bananas and smoothies are not the same with pear and grapes. Moderation is the key anyway.
@terryjames5484 жыл бұрын
If you are not eating other forms of sugar that’s fine. The problem in the US is there are so many foods with sugar in them that people in Greece never see. Older people had healthier diets, too. Dr. Berry does say otherwise a little fruit is fine.

I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for 50 years. For a few months I used fructose as a sugar substitute because it doesn’t raise blood sugar much. I forget why I quit that, but I’m glad I did, long before I learned about the big drawbacks to it. When agave syrup became fashionable years later, I soon learned how high it is in fructose and never had much. Fortunately.

Do you distinguish a difference between eating fructose with fiber (i.e. fruit) and then all other types of fructose? There seems to be research out there suggesting that the fiber in fruit reduces the negative effects you mentioned, would you agree?
@TechHead032 жыл бұрын
I would agree... The soluble and insoluble fibres in an apple or orange for example reform in your digestive system after you chewed them in your mouth... This slows down the rate of glucose and fructose absorption so that your gut bugs get some energy from your food too... Some keto people would have you believe that the entire amount of carbs (which is only 14g) in a small apple will go straight into your bloodstream... That is nonsense... However, if you drink apple juice (which has the fibre removed) then you are probably getting a few apples worth of sugar which would likely overwhelm the liver, especially if you are not training. Highly trained muscle will suck up lots of sugar no problem. In fairness, these Keto Docs aren't really aiming their message to jacked, muscular athletes.

@@TechHead03 - I have had gastric bypass and most of my stomach removed - result of undiagnosed kidney/adrenal issues, in childhood; in combination with long-term exposure to cortisol/stress leading to morbid obesity, in my teens, from being unknowingly autistic, living in an immensely abusive and neglectful environment. Because of how I am reorganized, internally, if I eat too much of a combo of fat/sugar/caffeine, and food digests too quickly - I get what’s called “Dumping syndrome.” It’s INCREDIBLY similar to diabetic hypoglycemia/low blood sugar symptoms. My body can’t handle the overload, so, it “dumps” ALL the nutrients - hence, low blood sugar symptoms. The ONLY thing that stops it, almost immediately? Apples. It seems to slow down the digestion of what has, yet, to be digested - as well as provide me with the appropriate amount of nutrients, requiring replacement. Also, fresh oranges really help my stomach sensitivities, if I eat something too heavy - especially meat and fat.

I immediately caught that too. Fruit is complete in its original form. But when you start processing and diluting it, you run into problems. An orange is great, orange juice is typically loaded with added sugars. Same with most fruit juices.
