All these signs can most likely be a deficiency in the mineral magnesium, NOT potassium. Jyst my opinion. Magnesium is the mineral that is most often lacking or too low in the human body. That is why we need to supplement with a magnesium capsule. 300 to 400 mg per day. Viola, you feel better. Magnesium helps in over 300 bodily functions including that of your vital organs. Jean.

One of the reasons for low potassium, is low magnesium levels. Your body can't absorb potassium without a good magnesium level.

In March/April 2023, I woke up paralyzed from the neck down. Went to the ER and turned out my blood-potassium level was 1.9. I was in the hospital for two weeks, then rehab for two weeks. Two weeks later, I was back in the ER for severe muscle aches and weakness; potassium level as down to 2.3. In July 2023, I was back at the ER for the third time, again for potassium level around 2.9. The reason? I had severe diarrhea since January 2023 because I had undiagnosed Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). Unfortunately, it took from April to July for them to finally diagnose me with EPI. Now I am taking enzyme replacement with every meal/snack and my potassium level has remained in the normal range since.

It's very important to make sure you don't have low potassium!! I was feeling bad for several days, finally felt so bad the 3rd day & had to call an ambulance. When I got to the ER & checked by the doctor, I was told they didn't see how I was alive. My potassium & magnesium wouldn't even register it was so low!! Please keep this checked & look for signs. I now take prescription potassium & magnesium every day & have blood work every 2 months & more often if I feel bad & have any of these signs!! Hope all stays well!!

@@amandaclark2340 I'm not a doctor but both of them should be good (you also need enough sodium in your diet to absorb the other electrolytes, plus other things like zinc and at least a little bit of taurine or magnesium for instance won't do it's work). A balance between the various minerals and other nutriment is important. Potassium is usually causing more cramps in the extremities (feet, hands, twitching eyelids) I had those symptoms for decades since my teenage years and it is gone now. Potassium is also very important to make the chloridric acid (might be translated a bit too literally from french) for your stomach, that had also been a very big problem for me as I realized years later.
@bigred9428
@bigred9428 7 ай бұрын
@@amandaclark2340 , Restless legs are more of an iron deficiency, I think. My mother suffered from leg cramps, then I started suffering from them a few years back, and when I took Magnesium, they went away (ish). I added Potassium that my doctor prescribed, and that was the extra thing I needed. So I'd say, use both. Magnesium Glycinate is a good general magnesium. I use Nature's Bounty that I got from Costco, and it seems pretty good. Potassium can be caustic, so you can't lie or recline for at least 20 minutes after taking it.

Definitely get plenty of natural, bio available magnesium. It calms the nervous system. It counterbalances the muscle fiber contraction mineral calcium. Magnesium helps the body to hold onto potassium. Dried pumpkin seeds "pepitas", nuts, leafy greens, avocados, bananas are all reliable sources of useable magnesium. Magnesium Oxide is a bad choice. Not bioavailable. Magnesium Orotate or Glycinate I have read many times are good if you want to rely on a supplement.

I used to have all of those symptoms and ended up in hospital with a suspected heart attack. While in the hospital I was put on a potassium drip. I felt much better afterwards. It's so frustrating when I tell my doctor I feel like my potassium is low. They just don't get it. Rather than prescribing electrolytes and suggesting which foods I should eat, they always want more tests and hospital visits. I was on the operating list for 12 months before I finally said enough. Now I eat more healthily and take a potassium supplement every day I feel so much better. Nobody explained fully what the proposed surgery was actually for, but it involved going through my nose! No, thank you.

They'll bleed you dry if they can, rather than fixing the problem. They don't want to lose customers. Since I had A-Fib last year, I found my heart is actually perfect. I had to fire my cardiologist because he wanted to give me blood thinners, which I refused. Since I added extra magnesium and potassium, I don't even have the simple arrhythmia that I've had since I was a child. The cardiologist said he gives everyone blood thinners after A-Fib, just so he can prevent strokes, whether people need them or not! I guess they have to cover their arsses because they don't want people to see that their heads got stuck up there. 😂😅🤣😆

I’m very angry at myself and my doctors. About 10 years ago I allowed a dr to put me on metapolol for heart palpitations. I told him at that time that taking potassium seem to make palpitations go away. I got a dumbfounded look. I also got the same look when I told my PCP years later. They both knew I had one thyroid removed at 12 yrs old. Years later I’ve learned more and can’t believe that the doctors didn’t make the connection. I found out I have Hashimoto after thyroid cancer. I understand why doctors say not to get information from the internet. They are afraid we might figure out, like I have, that they are clueless. Thanks so much for providing us with information that is actually life saving and not detrimental like the big pharma “doctors” who also never told me the side effects of the Crestor and PPI’s. It’s Time we all leave the pill pushers.

I'm in tx, and in a poorly insulated second floor south facing apt with no central air and heat plus I reky on the bus for transportation. Tge heat is often deadly in summer with temps being often over 100° f without humidity. All of this month and some of last month was all at 102° and above. Tidaygot to 105° . I absolutely have to suppliment potassium no matter how many potassium rich foods I consume. I'm doing a keto diet for health reasons attributed to hoshimotoes. A lot of easy access options for electrolytes are full of sugar so I can't have them. When covid hit, before I went keto, getting things like Gatorade powder cans was hard, especially in glavors I like. So I looked into making my own. I was able to get all the ingredients except the magnesium glycinate because of cost. So I looked into other options and found switchel. Switchel when originally made is not keto safe, but once it fermented into vinegar it is. Add a few drops of that to water infused with Apple, pineapple, watermelon, or oranges and u've got a nice low price suppliment. 4-6 teaspoones of pureed fruit or juice to a 64 oz bottle of water works really well to beat the heat. For me a dead giveaway of potassium deficiency arecramps along the base of my ribs. I've got them bad enough to cause me doubling over in tears before.

@@taradikoff123 Oh I definitely had issues because of it. Fatigue, muscle pain and weakness, muscle spasms and cramps, abnormal EKGs, tingling in my toes and feet, gut motility issues, etc. Some times more severe than others. It was just an endless repeating circle of getting blood tests, seeing potassium was low/very low, prescribing me RX potassium for a week, me feeling better for a few weeks; then repeat. Doctors always acted perplexed at why I couldn't keep the levels up so after years, I just kinda of accepted that "I guess that's just how my body is" and continued to ride the roller coaster.

If anyone reading this does have low potassium, please don't let your doctors ignore it or treat it passively. I honestly feel like the health care system failed me in this department. Too many were nonchalant about it and I trusted too much. I have a lot of regrets. It's you're health, so up to you to take the initiative. -Ask for frequent blood tests that include potassium. -Ask for a prescription of it's low. -Talk to your pulmonologist about starting or stepping up on a maintenance inhaler. -Remember that most OTC multivitamins and potassium supplements contain only 2% Daily Value. -The highest OTC is 1020mg of bicarbonate. -You can also get a capsule filler and fill your own. Potassium is vital. Your heart and other cells rely on it to function properly. Please don't ignore low potassium levels!

Dr signed for the results that night, but waited till Saturday morning to call him and tell him to go to pharmacy and pick up a drug because she was concerned that it was to low. Well that evening at 5:45 he died. Autopsy showed his potassium was 2.0. If only she would have called Monday night, damn good chance he would still be with us, RIP Broski (Roy)

Feel so lost. At 74, I have had one Dr that actually listened to my symptom and along with a blood test, prescribed potassium for me. which improved my life so quickly it was a blessing. As I followed my husband to every small town as he progressed in his career, I had many doctors who were afraid to prescribe potassium. Resorted to dietary fixes which only partially helped. Years of cramps...insomnia...palpitations...heart tests...30 day heart monitors...bloat...constipation...blurry thinking ...cramped hands and toes...My new doctor says blood test look normal, but I take 3AM+3PM 99 potassium tabs to just stay a bit normal. Am having cramps in my feet as I write this. It's wonderful to have this information, but how do I find a Dr. less afraid of a law suit and more interested in relieving the suffering of his patients?

If anyone has low K and kidney stones but the doctors aren't connecting the dots you might have this disease (which comes in conjunction with autoimmune secondary disorders). Also, be aware too much K has the same symptoms as low K. I was unconscious for over 18 hours as my body was voiding probably 99.99% of the K IV bags (it burns going in) I was being given until my body decided to start retaining it. I was inpatient for 3 days trying to get my levels back up. And from my missing 18 hours I was very disoriented. It all started with weakness and breathing problems. I had a trip to the hospital yesterday, was the wake up call I needed. I now know I have a major potassium deficiency. I had no idea it could do what it ended up doing to me on Saturday morning. The cramps were so bad I asked my partner to take me to the hospital, the pain was unbearable. I couldn't walk or even stand. The nurse gave me potassium and I felt better than I have in years. And I thought I was someone who ate a well balanced diet. For two years I wake up sore and stiff, thought I was just getting older. Thank you so much, I'm making some changes in my health.

Similar here. I eat very, very healthy, yet often feel like I'm on the verge of cramping up.. throughout my body. And after a strenuous day of heavy exercise, I sometimes get awakened early in the morning with horrendous inner thigh muscle cramping. Like a severely painful heart attack of the thigh muscles. I've come to realize that exercising daily, doing TOO MUCH of that, really burns up the potassium stores. Also, natural magnesium (dried pumpkin seeds, nuts, leafy greens, avocados, etc) I've learned helps the body to hang on to much needed potassium.

I can totally relate to what's been said. Calf cramps in the middle of the night, aches and stiffness in the morning. If you're on a ketogenic diet or low carb diet, you need to keep your levels up because you will flush a great deal of potassium through urination. Daily requirements are 4,700 mg. A quick and easy way to get as much potassium as possible is to take a no salt salt substitute.

A friend told me this advice and I took heed. I have had vein surgery. It’s out patient. I drive there and drive home. Not a bit of pain. So, my advice, while I still take the magnesium and potassium, it’s the vein surgery that fixed the problem.

What you are explaining doctor is so very true. You just hit the nail on its head. My mother was suffering from potassium, but the cause did not show up directly. For a while she was complaining about dizziness which they were considering too vague to explain. Her levels were sneaky and fooled her doctors. I thought it was her diabetes at first, but it turned out to be her potassium due to nutritional deficiency. She was not eating properly because of other reasons. They could not point to the reason so easy until the numbers started " staring at their face " literally. The human body is indeed amazing. My problem is that I love to drink water, and lots of it. And then suddenly came the dizziness... so I put one and one together. Any thoughts or insights you can add? I've just found a tomato soup that should contain 75 % RDI of potassium per 100 grams or 1 DL, which equals 3,5 ounces. I'll try this for some time and see if it goes away. @@taradikoff123 I gradually went into keto by trial and error. Finding out about carnivore has been very useful and has produced beneficial desired results. I never had a grossly overweight problem but have removed the extra body fat that I didn't need with this method of eating. I too have been concerned about the possible loss of too much weight. I've simply increased the frequency that I eat in order to provide more calories. For me personally I will not go back to starchy carbs because that will give me again the crashing, fatigue, bloating etc etc. I have found the electrolyte drops and the daily minerals by keto Chow to be extremely useful. If I drink plain water it goes straight through. A physician told me one time be sure and put something in the water so that it will not flush your kidneys. I have found the addition of extra magnesium, potassium and sodium electrolyte mix very satisfactory. My body is absorbing more of the liquids rather than passing it quickly through and there's been a significant reduction in the leg cramps at night. I am 79, no known comorbidities.

I bless my genes of very strong resiliant hearts but there is only so much it can handle, Im already since early September on the list for a 24 hour heart monitor, but yeah my bloodwork is fine and that of others is not so I probably never end up with one until its too late. Still my doctors dont take me serious, luckily I know now what to do when I feel such fatigue creeping up on me, but reading through the comments, I went through the needles eye a few times just how I felt :( Been to ER few times as well and ecg is fine and again the bloodserum levels of potassium too. I swear I am deficient on potassium after watching this, together with the evidence that my best remedy is munching away a box of lettuce, eating apples, taking electrolytes, grapes and high fiber cookies. This madnes of doctors not doing their job needs to stop. I was scared of taking potassium supplements but I will take them now added to a lot of potassium rich foods. It's very hot, and I do sweat-inducing yard work, so my potassium may be low. I also have high blood pressure, which is probably more stress related than diet, as I care for my elderly mother. I'm going to check the label on my Emer-gen-C supplement for potassium content. I do get pretty irritable in the summer and feel weaker than when it's not so hot. I'm feeling hopeful that there's a solution now. I have some edema which might be from the Amlodipine which I'm going to ask my doctor about, to see if there's anything safer and doesn't cause edema. UPDATE: palpitations at night have all but disappeared after upping my potassium. I purchased some Gatorlyte and low sodium V8 in addition to bananas and oj and avocados.

please forgive me this legnth of comment. i am very passionate about potassium topics. i have had potassium issues since 2011. the first time i thought it was the flu. i went to the small "bandaid hospital" er to get a shot for the nausea. they did labs and then swung the curtian open with 2 giant pills and 2 bags of iv fluid. i asked what it was all for. they said my potassium was low and i was being admitted. i asked what that meant and they said that i could have a heart attack at any moment (1.7!)~ not a hospital meant for life threatening situations. fast forward thru the years of being told, "i don't know why it is low...." nothing else is wrong. it is the diuretics you are taking. you must not be taking your potassium. your potassium is normal now, and hours later recheck and rushing to hook the iv potassium. being emotionally and mentally abused when i went t o er and then transferred every. single. time. to the psych rooms. cannot tell you how many times i litterally lost my mind because no one knew. (until 2015 turns out...) i thought maybe i was doing something, started questioning myself if they were right. how many times i was told when i swelled up 5-40lbs pretty much overnight that it was not swelling, i was just fat! i knew it was swelling because once given my diuretics back it most times came off as fast as it went on. i also cannot breath or function when swollen. even the bottom of my feet get so bad i cannot walk without crying or collapsing. fast forward again, April 2020. i was in the mental hospital. i had them check potassium (they were familiar with me). i was transfered to the main hospital twice. it was the second time that they got the on call nephrologist on board.... who happened to be one of the best. he looked in my files and found in 2015 that my then nephrologist and endocrinologist ran some tests that came back extremely abnormal. no one followed up. the endo accused me in the note saying i was taking too much diuretic and not taking my potassium like i should and ignored it. the on call re did those and did some others and FINALLY told me it was not my doing, and that i was indeed not 'crazy.!" he said i have hyperaldostertone! given my history we were thinking most likely secondary. someone later said prob primary without adrenal tumor since around 36 yo i had what was thought to be a stroke. he said might have been a TIA since they could not comfirm that and when they accessed my power port i felt something dislodge and passed out twice that night. so i still take my loop diuretics. i was switched from spironolactone to inspra.. which has been a game changer. i went from being admitted 3-5times per month to only 8-10 since 2020. i have only been in psych once.... my symptoms of it dropping or has dropped are 1. swelling, EVERYWHERE (more than 5lbs in 24 hr) 2. feeling faint 3. peeing a lot... like a potty hat full every 30 minues. 4. a distinct headache 5. weakness 6. sleeping a lot more, but also not being able to sleep for several days. 7. nausea 8. vomiting 9. some confusion in the moment 10. a lot more than usual whole body muscle spasms and bones hurting 11. the biggest one of all tho is when my suicidal thoughts become active with a plan and nothing triggered it. i have only had one hospitalist who was an horrible. he refused to call my nephrologist and went back to telling me it was my fault and diuretics doing it. and if not on diuretics potassium would go back up and i won't need it. few hrs later they check, it is up. but few hrs more it drops lower than when i came in. and i had not taken diuretic for 3 days prior. i called my nephrologist who came to see me and fixed my meds.

side note. i cannot eat enough potassium to keep up with my loss. 180 MEQ twice a day. sometimes more if i feel low or take my prn diuretic. i cannot drink gatorade or like sources due to sodium. i have found shine water and body armour is high in potassium but not sodium. i have to take magnesium. i have gastroparesis which doesn't help with absorbtion and digestion. a lot of times i end up finally throwing up.... at times 24-36 hrs i will throw up undigested food

Initial symptoms for me were dizziness, brain fog, swelling in ankles/foot, and muscle twitching. More serious symptoms were hypersensitivity to touch (wearing clothing made me feel as if I had sunburn), abdominal pain, and visual hallucinations. Had to go to A&E for emergency treatment of 2 x drip and 3 x medication. It happened again, and I ended up in hospital again. Same treatment received. I'm still being monitored, and I'm hyper aware of how I'm feeling. Fingers crossed, it doesn't happen again.

Dr. Berry, you probably covered this in another program, but with everyone now worrying about their low potassium I would like to bring the dangers of potassium that is too high to everyone’s attention. I wound up in ICU for 3 days with a serum potassium of 8. They actually checked it twice because they thought the lab girl did something wrong. I felt terrible with my main reason for going to the Dr was terrible muscle weakness. My arms & legs were literally like a cooked spaghetti noodle. It was crazy. There is no quick antidote for this either, they give you some horrible stuff to drink like banana flavored chalk & you literally have diarrhea until your levels are back down to normal. Since you are too weak to get in & out of bed all that diarrhea is terrible. This prob was caused by a perfect storm of meds I was on. I am now totally paranoid of too much potassium, but I do try to eat potassium rich foods. Listen to you all the time, GO DOC!

In the ICU where I worked as a nurse we often had pt.'s be admitted with hyperkalemia. This can cause cardiac arrhythmia's which can be life threatening. We use cocktails of kayexalate which is ingested and binds to the serum potassium and is passed in diarrhea. Also insulin, glucose, calcium and for really high levels a hemodialysis treatment is done via a dialysis catheter inserted into specific veins.

I opted out from capsules because they all have a bunch of other stuff, no more gelatin capsules for supplements I guess, apparently, anyway. So I did discover that too much potassium is extremely dangerous and I have held off on supplementing based on a little bit of fear of over supplementing. This video does clarify that some potassium supplementation is probably beneficial to carnivores, maybe even essential. But I will tread lightly and keep your warning in mind. Thanks for chiming in. All makes sense. I've been keto for a few years now and generally don't have any issues regarding electrolytes. Im not overweight and am healthy. However whenever it got hot or when we go on holiday, generally to a European island in the heat my body swells to ridiculous levels. Not visibly I may add around normal areas like feet and ankles but fingers and bodily do clothes don't fit well etc. and it drove me mad trying to figure what this was about. In these instances where we went getting fresh and potassium rich foods seemed to be the downfall of the hotel and this reflected hugely in my health and comfort. Now aware I can resolve it easily but for a long time this baffled me. Bx

What's interesting to me, aside from lab work showing low levels, is that you can have normal levels of potassium (as well as magnesium) and still be deficient. Short of finding out you're low, it almost seems pointless to have these tests done. I've had no doctor EVER discuss this. They look at the lab results and if they're in the normal range, everything is hunky dory. Too many doctors don't get beyond the computer and delve into anything as a root cause as symptoms. Thanks for posting these videos!

Exactly my case, my potassium serum levels are fine. But thats the job of the kidneys to do that and they function fine, I;d have kidney disease or faillure if bloodserum shows levels out of range. What matters is the amount that end up in tissues. I have just figured out I might be deficient on potassium and thats not my doctor who helped me to figure that out, but almost 2 years of writing down every single symptom and when, how and why it occured and everything that makes me feel good only to see patterns. And those patterns point towards hydration issues. I already dosed up on magnesium because I need it to level up my vit D. But still palpitations, arrhytmia , sweating, bloating, trembling... I tackle now the potassium because I thrive on eating certain foods that apparently are high in potassium (and copper). Taking electrolytes daily and when needed (sweating) is a gamechanger. I will soon go abroad to have cellulair test and or hair analysis on at least potassium done, the latter can tell me even if it was potassium as it shows the status for at least previous 6 months.
