Really excellent comments on the origin, kinesiology and potential treatments for tennis elbow. I have worked as an occupational therapist for 34 years and your comments very much reflect my experiences. I might add that I think one of the reasons that tennis elbow is so difficult to beat is that the elbow extensors are active in most everyday activities, well beyond Kendo. Try this for me. First make a firm grip while at the same time palpating near the lateral epicondyle till you have a good feel for where the origin of these muscle. Now repeatedly bend and strengthen your elbow (the motion is parallel to the ground) with a limp wrist. Not much activity because they are minimally active. Straighten the wrist to neutral (no bend either direction). You may palpate a little more activity. Finally bend the wrist back and do the same. You will note much more activity and the onset of pain if you have tennis elbow. Part of what wrist motion does is to adjust the length tension relationships of the finger muscles. In short, use your hand, use your wrist extensors. Why not the wrist flexors? We do most of our tasks in pronation (hand facing down) so we don't use them as often (although if you grip something firmly you can feel both sets of muscles fire to give you wrist stability. Just an old therapist's thought.

I had this problem after too many left hooks on punching bag, didnt heal for 3 months until I treated it with pouring boiling water in a cup and tapping that cup with boiling water lightly on the tennis elbow. maybe hot water increases blood circulation and tapping also increases blood circulation. Don't know if it is superstition but it treated my tennis elbow after trying other treatments like applying Chinese medical balm, ice pack, massages, resting.

Hi Paul do you have any tips for curing peronneal tendinitis due to Kendo ? Would be terrific if you shoot a video
@18ps3anos8 жыл бұрын
I started kendo recently and I made the mistake of practising suburi every day, even when I didn't have kendo classes, and now I'm starting to feel that pain, which is quite strange since I'm still a beginner.
@PaulHBShin8 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you did too much, too soon. Classic conditions for an overuse injury. You should probably dial it back a bit. Maybe use the flexbar I mentioned in the video. And if it doesn't get better, you should go see a doctor.

Have you had any IT Band issues in Kendo?
@PaulHBShin7 жыл бұрын
Fortunately not. And I can't say I've heard of anyone else having IT band issues in kendo, though I've heard of plenty of runners having IT band issues.
@randomthought787 жыл бұрын
I used to be a runner, so maybe that has something to with it. Have you heard of muscles around the knee becoming too tight in Kendo?
@PaulHBShin7 жыл бұрын
I have not specifically. Sound like you may need to go see a sports doctor.
@randomthought787 жыл бұрын
I just practice too much here. Sometimes I practice 6 hours a day on weekends

Sounds like you've diagnosed what the issue is.

Peroneal tendonitis ... Sorry for mispelling
@PaulHBShin9 жыл бұрын
David An Sorry, David. I'm afraid I don't have any personal experience with peroneal tendonitis. Wouldn't want to talk about something I don't have some familiarity with. Maybe someone watching this video might be able to chime in?

Been suffering left arm tennis elbow after a few weeks of daily one armed suburi. Not been able to shift the damn thing for 9-10 months, even after weighted wrist raises. I have a horrible feeling i'll need a steroid injection.
