Hi Andy. I was having my 4th dan exam just next to you at about the same time I think (was number 402)... Thank you for sharing that video, I was quite disappointed that I couldn’t watch your tachiai (for obvious reasons), but now I can 😉 Fortunately I also passed my exam. Awesome seminar, that was!

Great job Andy! In 6 month's I'll go for my 1st Dan, I noticed that your strikes have been fairly small and fast, however I've been told to keep my strikes big and correct, which gave me the problem of being fairly slow and predictable during my 1st Kyu exam. Is the so called "big and correct" a requirement more for lower levels grading or it stays true all the way through all the Dan levels?

hi mate To my understanding (I am at lower level now), big and correct strike will help you to improve your body movement, your wrist control, tenouchi, sae and commitment strike with abandon. Then eventually you will improve your speed. Dont think too much about how fast you can strike now. Instead, think about how to do it correctly with right basic or fundamental skills such as posture, left hand, tenouchi, sae and so on. However, in jigeiko and grading, I dont see using big techniques are practical so you should consider to refine your technique by using small and practical men for example. At our level, it is better to focus on Kikentaichi, valid strike with abandon feeling. In my grading, I just showed my men strike and nothing more. Even now, I am still focusing on men strike but if I see an opportunities to strike kote then yeah I will attempt to do that, but again men is still my most favourite strike. Hope that helps and correct me if I am wrong

Thanks very much for doing that Andy, difficult to publicly critique your own work that way!

In my first comment on this video I was 1st kyu. Funny to come back as 3rd Dan 😂. I think with your first men you pretty much got the grading home

Nice video and thanks for this analysis. I remember I heard in one your videos that it is fine to do hiki waza in grading. However as every dojo or country has different opinion on that, do you think I will fail my grading just because I do a hiki waza during my next grading?
@TheKendoShow4 жыл бұрын
If you do Hikiwaza at a good opportunity, and it meets the criteria of Yukodatotsu (valid striking) then it can’t possibly be taken in a negative way. You should not balance the success of your grading on Hikiwaza - you should be able to demonstrate Waza from Issoku-Itto-no-Maai more than anything - but you shouldn’t have to shy away from it either. All that said - it’s unlikely that in grading there will be much time spent at Tsubazeriai, and therefore the opportunity for Hikiwaza will be very rare in any case 😉

I thought in my shodan and nidan grading, I also showed a hiki men as well but I dont think they were good hiki mens. I just literally saw the opportunities then I naturally took it. However I still try to show my men strike. Fortunately, I passed. p/s: luckily, I passed my both grading in the seminars where Andy sensei took part in and I have had chances to do jigeiko with him and asked him many valuable advices

nice video. it will be nice you let us towatch your grading video first then break it down later. it is kind of annoying when you go forward and backward. just my own personal feel. thanks
