Great angling and slips from the kendo guy, I didn't expect that level of body awareness vs. Muay thai style strikes. With that being said it's interesting to think about, weapon strikes are faster so maybe kendo does teach better reaction time when it comes to evading and it would be interesting to take a couple classes. Also I wanna see if I can land more overhand strikes barehanded in my regular sparring, given how easily the kendo guy was slipping in with them (Assuming it wasn't just a matter of speed of execution given the weapon.) I never throw them because they seem silly, but they are a thing in traditional martial arts, and the muay thai guy seems to not know how to guard against them.

Nice for a videogame/manga concept, still bad in real life: historical metal gauntlets were not as resistant as you think. Depending on the size of your enemies weapon, trying to parry/grab/deflect it could still get your hands badly hurt, and would still demand you to use both, while your armed opponent could still unleash his sideweapon/dagger with the other hand. If your idea was so good, it would have been widely used around the world by some warrior culture...none did. The closest to that we get is from the ninja's gauntlets, byt they still preferred to use weapons.

Why doesnt the muay thai guy just bamboo kick the kendo sword to smithereens?
I’m curious as to why in kendo after they perform a strike against a forward moving opponent, after slicing/ stepping of their line why they don’t do a follow up strike? Like say when you do a strike to the head and step off when they advance follow up with a pivot strike to the throat/ back of the neck or if they pass you entirely why not go into a full turn neck to hip stroke? Pardon my ignorance but I’ve never done kendo before so perhaps the rules don’t allot for it
@eliseofernandez81163 жыл бұрын
Kendokas are trained to more or less commit to one strike. In their training is common to either retreat or keep running forward after striking (usually seen in do, or abdomen strike). That's why you see them go backwards after successfully striking head. Their scream (kiai) and walking are an evaluated part of their point system. That's why it's so ingrained in them. Without kiai or moving forward/backwards, no point is awarded. Remember that kendo is a sport as artificial as modern fencing. Lots of what they do doesn't make much sense, but to the fair, you don't need to keep slicing a dead person. Once you do a lethal cut, you need to avoid the retaliation of the dying man. That's the justification for the tradition. Keep moving away after a lethal cut, don't just stand there.
@anthonyprevost39683 жыл бұрын

Complete noob who just found this: I love the respect and sportsmanship they show each other. I do have a Q though for anyone reading: What’s the significance of the kendoka(?) shouting “AYYY” after very successful hit? At first I thought they were celebrating but they do it so consistently it makes me think it’s involved in the movement, like shouting when striking - but they only do it after they actually land a hit. Is it like they’re “claiming” a successful hit for the observers, or maybe it’s some kind of intimidation?
@pleasedontkillme28542 жыл бұрын
They're shouting "Head!" or "Waist!" in Korean instead of Japanese because they're Korean; and yeah, it's to indicate that they hit the opponent, but it's not really for the viewers that's just how you do kendo. Usually "Neck!" and "Wrist!" is also used, but the muay thai guy did not wear armor on his wrist and hitting the neck is very dangerous (especially since the guy is gonna be moving around a lot, if the kendo user misses it could seriously injure the muay thai guy) so they did not shout or hit those spots.

Wrist-flick strikes against Muay Thai's body-toppling force work oppositely to the wrong conformity in the comment threads. And in reality, grappling comes in, sword is gripped and yanked and sword-bearer hurled into a knee. There is barely a contest, skillset wise, between the simplistic kendo strikes (no matter how fast or how connective/flicky) and the more devastating 8-weapon-using Thai. Thai Sword combined with Muay Thai even more outpaces flicky kendo.
