Clicked on this video as soon as I saw Prince, Kendrick Lamar, and Tupac in the same thumbnail. I've been waiting for someone to delve into the Kendrick Lamar and Prince connection, especially. You see: Prince is my all-time favorite artist, musician, entertainer, etc.; I've been his biggest fan since I was 11, I own every album, I know his entire discography from front to back, I know a lot of his unreleased material too. As for Kendrick Lamar, he became my favorite rapper of all time after Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers dropped. Funny enough, I actually discovered K. Dot through Prince, specifically a live performance I happened to come across on KZbin some time in 2015: it was of Prince playing with his all female band, Third Eye Girl, and the song was a lesser known deep cut only diehard Prince fans know about, called "What's My Name", only, it was modified to feature a rapper I'd never before seen or heard of, despite the fact that this same rapper, I'd soon find out, was already a household name, and his name was Kendrick Lamar. (Obviously, I wasn't paying too much attention to rap in the 2010's; I might as well had been living under a rock when it came to the genre). I'd come around soon enough though. It would take some years. I'd initially tried using DAMN. as a point of entry to Kendrick's catalog but I didn't quite take to that album. Fast forward to 2022 tho, and Mr. Morale is all I'm listening to for months on end, then I finally, eventually make my way to Kendrick's back catalog and now he's my favorite rapper of all time. Now, when it comes to Tupac, I grew up with his music, as my father and brother were his biggest fans and would blast his music in the house, but I never actually listened to him on my own and still don't to this day, however, I went to see Tupac: Resurrection when it hit theaters in the early 2000's and learned so much about him that I didn't know, such as his love and respect for Prince, which made me see Tupac in a different light and appreciate and understand him more than I ever did. Anyways, all this is to say, this is a topic I've been low-key waiting on someone to expound upon. How can this not be good? You've got yourself a sub just based on the topic alone. Thank you for this, and I'll probably edit in some afterthoughts on this comment once I'm done watching the video. Props to you. ✊

I’m here bc of this connection. Folks can throw out all sorts of influences, but the thread I hear, sonically and explicitly are the TuPac and Prince influences~straight through to GNX, sonically Prince is always there. If anyone wonders just take a listen to Prince’s opus, Sign of the Times. Prince is even more resonantly influential than TuPac once one listens to this seminal album.

If people do their research on the Drake and Kendrick rap career people will see why Kendrick popped out the way he did. Drake has been shooting shots for a long time and Kendrick has been letting him slide, giving him passes letting Drake do his thing. Drake is a good pop artist but doesn't write half of his raps. Kendrick raps about life, what people goes through, life struggles and manage to have god to stand on and he writes his raps with being versatile with his music. He is heavy influence by old school music and a few rappers that writes their lyrics. Which most people can relate to if you grew up in the hood or lived around it to know what really goes on in the streets. Kendrick is an lyrical artist electricfying when it comes to his music while Drake is pop star making music that you can dance to pacifying the audience. A big difference between the two.

Kendrick to me is the goat in hip hop. What I fuck with the most is he tells his fans not to worship him. How many rappers got fans that are almost obsessed? Have a conversation with a Drake or Em fan about hip hop. Kdot is a purist. He cares about hip hop culture and as a white dude he the artist that really helped me understand that hip hop is black peoples culture. They created it and it belongs to them. You have to keep this fact mind constantly as a hip hop head. If not you allowing the culture you invested in to slowly change to something it’s not. Kdot the greatest to ever do it imo if he ain’t to you that’s fine I respect that.
