Prayer by Kendrick Lamar is one of the most impactful pieces of lost music to ever surface online. The way he raps about Michael Jackson and Martin Luther King Jr is stellar.

If you somehow don’t know who Kendrick is, he’s one of the most critically acclaimed rappers of all time even being the first rapper ever to win a Pulitzer prize for his 2017 album DAMN. After DAMN’s release Kendrick basically disappeared off the face of the earth to work on his follow up album, Mr Morale and The Big Steppers, that would come out in 2022.
But during this silent period, around a couple songs and recordings from 2019 surfaced throughout 2020 on the now defunct lost media forum leakthis. Out of these songs and demos the one that shone above the rest was the song Prayer.
Unlike most narrative songs Kendrick begins the first verse by rapping from the point of a song. Not just any song though. The entire first verse is from the point of view of the song ABC by the Jackson 5 talking about its most famous creator Michael Jackson...

Kendrick will not use songs if he feels it doesn’t belong in the record. Even if they’re amazing. He almost didn’t use Alright until his buddy played the sax over it. Then it fit the instrumental theme of the album. There probably was some reason why he left this one out.

Kendrick is my favorite artist of all time, I remember when I first heard this leak I damn near cried. I was like DAMN., Kenny really 'bout to drop ANOTHER masterpiece. Then I was shocked and a bit dissapointed this wasn't on Mr. Morale. But still, he gave us another MASTERPIECE with Mr. Morale. Hopefully Prayer can get an official release sometime in the future... I mean King Kendrick and Uncle Al on the same track is what the world NEEDS.

Prayer is an early version of Father Time. The themes of fatherhood and being a leader as well as chunks of the instrumental (u can head it in the piano) are early versions of it. Not really lost media just a rough draft that internal team leaked.

I feel like the message falls flat and Kendrick didn’t release the song because of that. Neither MJ nor MLK nor their Art are disregarded because of their controversies. There arguably the 2 most influential people of color of the last century and are in currently respected as such. And the final verse reveals a fear of being cancelled essentially, which just leaves this taste in your mouth of “what is Kendrick afraid of finding out”
