I LOVE ALL THE HATE in the comments.....which are all from NON-FPVers, so basically carry NO weight in knowing WTF they are talking about. Thank you for this review. For the haters: Comments on Poor signal - you obviously haven't seen Ken fly here before with a proper Kwad. Never had an issue with those, yet this one does. That's a point against it. Comments on the small bump - For a GPS drone, yeah sure, that was hard. For Kwads, we hit things MUCH harder and they keep going. Another point against it. Batteries are overpriced, sure the flight time is a little longer but not 8x more which is how much more they cost than typical lipos Repairs are questionable and a lot that DJI is not admitting to yet. The word FPV also carries the implication of durability which this drone does not have. DJI could have easily given this drone a carbon fiber frame, but they went with plastic. Final death point against it This might be a gateway drug into FPV....but highly unlikely
@protonus3 жыл бұрын
Ken - if you pop the rear cover off the controller behind the throttle stick you can remove the spring tension that is centering the spring for normal/sport modes, and instead get a normal, unsprung throttle style stick like normal FPV uses. This is by design, and many DJI controllers have these sort of adjustments under the grips.

From the perspective of someone that only flies freestyle FPV drones, I've never flown a GPS drone at all. For me, I'd be VERY apprehensive of something like this - while it can FPV and it can GPS, but it doesn't really do either that well. However, my dad has seen me fly and wants to get into FPV but wants training wheels so he doesn't have to solder every time he's on the field. Something like this is absolutely perfect for him. He bought one last year and has been flying it periodically since then to get the feel for and concepts down for flying FPV. Now, he hasn't tried acro yet, so the drone is still completely intact with the same set of props, but he's significantly more comfortable flying and understanding the controls with goggles on. I think he is the perfect example of someone who SHOULD buy the potato.

For those that may care the arms do not come with motors like other DJI consumer drones. You have to buy the motors separate which is actually a plus like you said. You are actually supposed to change the throttle control to have no rebound via 2 small screws that you tighten down. The battery is way to expensive for a freestyle drone. It is too fragile for FPV freestyle. It is perfect for cinematic chasing. It is perfect for learning FPV with being able to slowly turn of the safety features and modes until you get to full manual. It is terrible at proximity flying because it is Fra-gee-lay
@danbelick3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken, I'm not a DJI fan, but some fact checking of the FPV manual: 1) All DJI drones must have video recording halted before turning off, or there will be no saved video. 2) DJI FPV must be put into NORMAL mode prior to landing. You did not land in the video, you hit the ground. I'm sorry it was damaged, and hope someone will cook up some more crashworthy landing gear for it. Clearly this in not a drone the FPV crowd will welcome, but it is still the drone many people are waiting for. But not necessarily you. Hope DJI warranty fixes you up quick.

Going against the grain here but I bought the DJI FPV drone combo the morning of the 2nd from Best Buy and I absolutely, love it. It totally rips, the picture quality and range is amazing. As far as cost goes, I've spend hundreds willingly on Tiny Hawk 2's, Tiny Hawk Freestyle 2's, Scimitar 215, and a bunch of other racing drones that aren't anywhere near as capable as the DJI FPV drone but they are still fun. To say this thing isn't good is so far off. RTFM, you can adjust the left stick so that it does not spring to the middle, when switching to manual mode, you have to center the right stick and lower the left one, as shown IN THE GOGGLES. As for the auto-land, it was caused by the battery impact, nice safety feature that it lands if it detects damage, but truly a design flaw to have the battery and antenas be the first things that hit the ground. when you go around a massive concrete wall, it'll prevent wireless transmission, an analog FPV quad would likely have lost any transmission and the goggles would have completely blanked. You likely lost footage from the first flight because you shut down the battery without stopping the recording.

I've watched analog FPV from someone else flying it and it was like watching a bootleg VHS tape. I also want the DJI experience that I am accustomed, too, no frills and no tinkering needed. So funny that some people will see a message about a battery connection problem after a bounce ‘ crash on the ground and then keep flying. I have smacked the ground hard and chose to land and investigate. Some would be able to plug there battery into the provided charger to reset, others would be clueless. I have been flying quads for years and have a dozen of them that I don’t fly anymore. Along with a plethora of batteries, motors, connectors, soldering irons, different goggles, antennae stands, long range antennae, batter chargers, cables, and room that is a work shop just for drones. All this crap just seems archaic now. I travel the world for a living and I like to take a drone with me. The DJI FPV makes it simple. I don’t have arrive at some island and realize I don’t have the right googles to go with this transmitter battery with a different connector with this drone. It all just works. I can always expect a range of ultra clear reception of 2km (depend on the metal boxes I’m standing next to lol.). If I race again at a meet, I guess I will dig into the shop and get a couple of more cheaper drones to slam into poles, flags and Terra firma. Thanks for making, processing, and sharing. Sorry bout that damned battery! PS... that art on the grain mill is amazing!!

I think this is the most unbiased and honest review. Especially for people who are new to FPV !!! Not a good drone to buy. I think DJI should take a note of so many shortfalls in this drone and launch an upgraded version.

An honest review. That's freaking awesome. Also shows you the difference between a reviewer that got it for free vs paid for it themselves. It's probably a good drone for DJI'ers that want to dip their toe as you say, but heaven help them if they suddenly think they can fly and stick that thing into full manual acro mode.

Thank you Ken for not perpetuating the hype train and giving us honest feedback from a legit FPV enthusiast such as yourself. I call this drone the jack of multiple traits, but master of none. There are far better options on both paths, and this drone doesn’t seem to be any better than any Cinematic drones at that price point or a great home brew drone for that price as well. Thank you for not being a KZbin shill like many other are.

@jeffkodysz43093 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the honest review! I'm not an FPV guy (though it looks like fun), but I never understood why DJI would think that FPV flyers would want a pre-built FPV quad. The FPV community seems to me to be a community of builders and tinkerers, constantly tweaking their quads to get all they can out of them. Can't do that with this.

"you will get it and be disappointed" quite the opposite actually, i got it and i love it. It's not supposed to be your typical fpv drone its more of a hybrid and leans a lot more towards beginners which its perfect for, especially since you can still fly in full acro mode when you get good enough.

Ken you got a lemon. I bought a fly more kit with the smart controller on a Mavic Air 2 and the bird was hovering at 28 feet and just all of a sudden dropped out of the sky. I didn't have extended care from DJI but they replaced it anyway because it was a lemon. Got a replacement brand new and have had no problems since.

Can't you loosen the spring tension on the left stick?
@diogocorreia97403 жыл бұрын
You can!
@MichaelBlueMusic3 жыл бұрын
Yes, which releases the spring entirely for actual FPV control. That, combined with the “country code not updated” error makes me wonder if not rtfm could contribute to some of the complaint. The batter is still definitely vulnerable, but I’ve watched a couple legit FPVers who actually liked this. 🤷♂️

For anyone that is defending the DJI FPV and insulting Ken because he crashed. That's called normal use and wear. It's is an FPV drone, DJI should have anticipated that. True, it was ken's fault, but any other FPV drone would have handled it, and that's what Ken was trying to communicate.

Never fly an “A” model. I pray DJI starts working out the bugs. I am a newbie, and was excited about this drone because I wanted to start getting into FPV flying. I won’t drop that much cash on this drone until they come out with some updates making the software more reliable. Don’t see DJI change if the design much, but I pray they add a redesign of the battery, or some sort of extended landing gear to protect the battery. Great video! Always enjoy your content.

This is true of most of their new platforms. The inspire, the Mavic, and the Spark were falling out of the sky when they launched. I bought my Mavic a year after release and it's been steady as a rock for years now. DJI does make a good product, but they release it in beta and let the early adopters work out the bugs.
