That was tight. A lot of these videos leave something to be desired , this covered it welll. That one illustration of the sartorius contracted on the skeleton was a great visual. Thanks for the upload.

It is the lateral rotation of the leg, not the interanl rotation.

Hi Fraz, the Sartorius is able to perform internal rotation at the knee joint and external/lateral rotation at the hip joint. Hope this helps. :)

Yeah! My text book says rotation of the leg aswell. I guess elsevier-evolve has explaining to do

Why is the sartorius active during abduction of the thigh? The insertion on the medial side of the knee makes me think it will be an adductor instead.
@Kenhub6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah, If you take a look at the sartorius muscle, you will see that it is attached on the anterior superior iliac spine of the pelvic bone, and inserts on the pes anserinus on the medial aspect of the knee. Now, the pelvis is the fixated/immovable part here, and the knee/leg is the movable part. Imagine the muscle contracting, with the pelvis being static. Thus, it will pull the leg away from the midline of the body, which is called abduction. We have another video on the functions of the sartorius muscle using 3D animations, that will surely be helpful to you: www.kenhub.com/en/videos/sartorius-muscle-functions-3d Happy studying! :)

I think a better way of describing it other than what they stated in more visual terms, is that the origin of where the muscle attaches(hip) crosses over to the insertion of the medial side(knee). Muscles contract when they are shortened. If you do adduction, it would only lengthen or stretch the muscle. If you do abduction, you have the knee part pulling towards closer to the hip part. Hence the contraction of the muscle and the reason why it abducts rather then adducts.

Anyone know the antagonist(s) of the Sartorius muscle and the synergist(s) for this muscle?
@Kenhub6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! The functions of the Sartorius muscle are flexion in the hip and knee joint, abduction and external rotation of the hip joint and internal rotation of the knee joint. It's synergists are, for example, the Iliopsoas, Pectineus, Tensor fasciae latae and Adductor brevis muscles. The antagonists are the Gluteus maximus muscle and parts of the Adductor magnus muscle.

How is it classed as an extensor of the thigh? What even is an extensor of the thigh? I assume you are meaning what i refer to as a hip extensor? Which makes me even more confused as to why its classified as an extensor when it performs no extension at any joint it crosses?
@kylesimpson41798 жыл бұрын
Sartorious is definitely not a thigh extensor muscle. It will flex, abduct, and laterally rotate the thigh at the hip joint, and cause flexion of the leg at the knee with slight medial rotation from a flexed position. Thigh extensors are what you are considering to be hip extensors. Technically the hip joint (acetabulum) is a stationary component of the innominate and you are extending the thigh at the hip joint :)

Dear CXS1181, the Sartorius is classified as an extensor of the thigh because it lies in the anterior compartment. This is a pure anatomical categorization and does not say anything about its function as an hip and knee flexor. Cheers! PS: Here is summary of all anterior (extensor) thigh muscles: books.google.de/books?id=grIBCgAAQBAJ&lpg=SL5-PA123&dq=sartorius%20%22extensor%20of%20knee%22&hl=de&pg=SL5-PA123#v=onepage&q=sartorius%20%22extensor%20of%20knee%22&f=false
