Kenji Harima Is What Made School Rumble So Memorable!!! (School Rumble Discussion)

I love this guy to death....he is what made me a fan of School Rumble in the first place. And btw (Harima and Eri is the best ship XD)

Harima definitely made School Rumble memorable but the other characters really complimented him as well as the story. They were interesting enough to make you forget about the Harima x Tenma relationship. Personally, I find it a real bloody shame that the anime abruptly ended, and manga could have continued onto their third year but didn't due to declining popularity while other generic expendable moe crap get more attention. So expendable in fact they they end 13 episodes and a new moe takes its place and the cycle continues.

Although Harima is outstanding, I also think characters like Yakumo and Eri also carried the show. It's a biased opinion, but I felt like Eri in particular was a character I related to in almost every situation she found herself in. A lot of people didn't like her, but I felt that she was a character that struggled to change herself - a character that saw the value in kindness and goodness but couldn't quite obtain them in the way she wanted, but her friends still appreciated her regardless. IMO Harima was so amazing for the fact that he didn't put his lust before his love. Sure there were times where he was lewd, but it didn't overcome his romantic feeling and he truly wanted to have a real life with Tenma.

School Rumble was definitely 80% about Harima. Damn... I remember watching it in high school in the 2000s. It's been more than a decade, since. Anime and manga have evolved *a lot* since.

Although Tenma doesn’t deserve Harima, I’m not a fan of Harima with Eri or Yakumo either. But I guess if I had to choose between the two, I prefer Yakumo over Eri .-.

I’m in the camp that thinks all three girls are pretty good for Harima in their own specific ways so I’d be okay if he ended up with any one of them. Let me break down why. Tenma and Harima genuinely have common interests, namely the show Three For the Kill, they’re both pretty dull-witted (When combined, they’ve got the brainpower of a walnut), prone to misunderstandings and they have a lot of heart. I could see them being a chaotic but delightfully cute couple. Yakumo and Harima have a very quiet, subdued and slightly subtle relationship going thanks to the two of them working on comics together but you can tell the bond and explicit level of trust is present between the two. Initially, Yakumo wasn’t able to read Harima’s thoughts because he wasn’t interested in her romantically but when she noticed he had a directly tender connection with animals, she started to become intrigued by him. In turn, Harima trusted her with his comics after seeing that she wasn’t going to make fun of him or judge him. It grows to the point where Harima even begins to consider her a friend that he actively wants to call and give updates to. On Yakumo’s part, she slowly started to fall in love with Harima due to his good heart, determination, dedication and I’m assuming his good looks also seeing as she’s been up close and personal with him a handful of times. But when she realized Harima’s feelings for her sister Tenma, she decided it would be best if she wished for and rooted for their happiness instead. Selfless but a bit naive imo because it was completely one-sided on Harima’s part. It’s a sweet gesture but there’s nothing wrong with Yakumo wanting to seek out that happiness for herself. Even if Harima rejected her in favor of Tenma, it would’ve been like what she told Tenma: Better to do something and regret it than not do anything at all and regret it forever. That said, as far as how they’d work as a couple, I think Yakumo could really ground Harima, bring him back to reality when necessary and also quietly make him happy in ways neither Tenma nor Eri would be able to. And in turn, Harima could encourage Yakumo to be less passive and teach her that sometimes, it’s okay to live a little, be less selfless and to be a little more impulsive. I think they’d be able to bring out the best in one another that way. Sorry this section was so long but you can probably tell which girl I lean towards the most from its length alone. lol Last is Eri. Her dynamic with Harima is far more akin to what you saw out of Ryuuji and Taiga from Toradora! albeit much more comedic in tone thanks to School Rumble’s overall nature in storytelling. She’s the blonde pampered rich girl while he’s the brutish bearded delinquent boy. Total opposites yet the reason why Eri began finding herself smitten by “Whiskers” is because around him, she never felt the need to put on airs or fake smiles. She felt like she could be her true self around him. That coupled with the times she’s seen him naked and got glimpses of his true nature, it’s easy to see why she fell for him and why she was at odds with Yakumo. Because Eri could sense the same level of affection for Harima coming from Yakumo as well. As for how well they’d work together, they’d probably find ways to bicker and publicly get on each other’s nerves but in private, Harima would show a softer side to himself he once would only exhibit around Tenma. And in turn, Eri would show Harima that she’s not actually stuck up, just very lonely and depressed. I apologize once again for the length but all in all, School Rumble did a fantastic job selling these characters, their personalities, their wants & desires and the relationships between them all that I honestly would be happy if Harima ended up with any one of these three girls. In a perfect ideal world, I would want Harima to get his dream girl and be happy, but if I were to narrow it down, I think he’d be at his best with Yakumo. Just my opinion if I had to totally narrow it down, though.
