It’s definitely serj making the low guttural sound while slipping up into head voice. Such amazing dynamics when they started. He avoids all that now, as he’s gotten a bit older.
@TobyMichaelsOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Daron and the bass player tend to do it live now. Serj is very protective of his voice
@DJFalkoHannover2 жыл бұрын
There is no "head" voice after the growl. Its his real high voice.
@TobyMichaelsOfficial2 жыл бұрын
@@DJFalkoHannover you are actually both right. :) it is his full voice and the tail is actually a little head voice(falsetto or whatever you wanna call it) specifically on the word ""play" :)
@ashscott60682 жыл бұрын
Him avoiding that, has a lot to do with why there's been no new album. I think he cares a lot more about his solo career. When you look at the songs they recorded during the Toxicity session, and which didn't make the album, it was all the ones where Daron got a lot of backing vocals. Then, by Mesmerize/Hypnotise, suddenly Daron is doing way more vocals, and is way too loud in the mix on a lot of the songs. Deffo a power shift that Serj wasn't happy with

Thanks for coming back to System of a Down. It's a unique ride each song. A different art, a new fact and perspective to chew. They just have an ability to just reach in and pull out something inside you that you've felt for a long time and shove it in your face saying....you're welcome....now deal with it and don't you dare shove it back inside! If and when you ever decide to come back to analyze another one of their songs, I recommend, 'Question'. (I want to suggest Radio/Video for the harmonies but Question is just something else entirely and I think you'll enjoy it).

If I remember correctly most of the music was composed by the guitarist Daron but he needed something else to add to it. Shavo the bass player had that interlude riff prepared and showed it to Daron and it fit so well with the rest of the song that they kept it.

Ken, you are such a lovely person! I appreciate the tangent on the whole “shadow side”. I can relate to that. Often I like to connect to that anger in music even when I may not necessarily be feeling angry. But it still feels good to scream sing. I know you know what I mean.

Your comment about musicians feeling angry lately resonates with me. I have several friends who were accomplished musicians and recording engineers with Grammy's on their shelf or Platinum on their walls, who are now doing live sound and grateful to have work. 30 years ago, when I started working in the industry, they were still doing live recording in studio with musicians together in the same room. The industry has changed incredibly and contemporary music has suffered.

Your aside on musicians feeling angry was not only relatable, but also got me wondering about how different styles of music can seem to limit which emotions are 'acceptable' to express. If you're a pop or jazz singer, is there space to express anger in your music without alienating the audience? I'm not as familiar with those styles, so I truly don't know. One of my favorite musicians is Devin Townsend, and a big reason why is he's one of the few heavy metal guys who's willing to write songs or even entire albums about love and peace and trying to be a better person. If you want to hear something heavy and uplifting, check out his song "Spirits Will Collide." :)

In my mind, this song is about the radicalization of people, getting information from echo chambers that confirm what in their mind they think is right.
