I also don't get it bc it just doesn't make sense to me that someone is inexperienced with other people and also not sexually activated at all, it just suddenly happens when they meet "the right guy"? I agree with your point on virginity. Virginity is a theme that is really weirdly explored in media. Either the virgin is lusted after because of their virginity or they are shamed for it. As a 20 year old virgin, and inexperienced in every way possible (never even kissed anyone), this makes me super uncomfortable. I honestly had no sexual interest in people until 17/18 and people have had really odd reactions to that and it just makes it harder to do anything. And I'm bi sexual and a lot of guys have asked me how I know I like girls if I've never been with one or that I'm not a "real woman" or have not "really had sex" unil I've had sex with a guy. It's scary out here

The boys (they aint men) that ask that sort of question don't seem to understand attraction. If you need to have been with a particular sex to know that you're attracted to them then I guess hetero virgins don't exist because. well. how would they know they like guys if they've never been with them? On that same thread, it's also super hard being asexual because people say 'oh you just haven't had good enough sex' or 'you haven't tried it so you wouldn't know'; people act like it's a special challenge to turn you sexual and whatever like. no. having sex isn't going to make me change. all of you make me want to vomit. thnx.

I agree, especially in high school where Seniors(adults) would actively go after freshman who aren’t even considered adults which only made it weirder. Personally I’m a bisexual women/girl and going from both personal and friends experiences, it really shouldn’t be that big of a deal. And yeah I’m more experienced with women simply because most of the guys in our old high school were either wanna be try hards/gang bangers, borderline rapey vibes, or both. Yeah I would flirt here and there but that was only cause I was bored :/. Just on that alone I usually talked with girls cause they were never as desperate to get any. Yeah there were a few guys that were genuinely good people, but we always just stayed as good friends (I’m a really boyish/tomboy girl so I was always a bit of guy friend) Yet people want to rush stuff like that. Idk man I just don’t like how a topic as that should be sensitive, like it shouldn’t be somethin forced, insulted or fetishized. I seen a lot of stuff, and simply put it, NO ONE as young as a middle schooler should be worried about that. Don’t mind my rant but it should really be normalized :/

Even when it comes to penetrative sex between a man and a woman (what most people think of as "sex"), the act can happen with no orgasm for either party. However, in this instance, most people in society would agree that the act still happened between the two people.

My first penetration was that and it makes me feel awful to have people call it sex or loss of my virginity and I know a lot of equally and more hurt people feel the same way so I felt I had to share this for them. I never looked at the idea of virginity as homophobic, but I've always seen it as misogynistic and extremely male centered. Just as sex (in media) is often very male centered. There are many men who feel that lesbians or women who don't do "typical intercourse" are virgins who NEED to experience that. But with all the misinformation about sex, hymen, and virginity that exist, it's not a stretch to call it homophobic.

Man, your point about society framing loss of virginity around penetration really hit home for me. I'm a lesbian who doesn't enjoy penetration of any kind, yet I'm very sexually active and happy with my sex life. But society constructs virginity so much around penetrative sex that it just feels like a person's sex life is completely ignored and invalidated if they don't engage in that. Like it's not real sex. I wish I had something more eloquent to say about how the framing of 'anything but penetrative sex' = virgin and 'penetrative sex' = non-virgin, but... yeah. It's just frustrating. Bottom line, virginity is a weird construct.
@contrarian9999
@contrarian9999 2 жыл бұрын
It is androcentric. I'm about to be blunt with my wording so I hope it doesn't offend but here goes: it's so funny how sex is so centered on men and their genitalia. It's why bisexual women were blankly labelled straight or lesbians are invalidated and why most people think bisexual men are just gay. Ironically enough, the vagina is far more suited to be the "gatekeeper" of pleasure -no refractory period, multiple potential orgasms, better orgasms and an organ that is solely dedicated to sexual pleasure. It annoys me that the penis, with it's five second exhaust and refractory period is somehow powerful enough to dictate not only virginal status but sexual orientation validity. Anyway, rant over lol.

@@contrarian9999 That's so interesting, isn't it? People are openly homophobic but heterosexual sex in media often is just penetration, and the penis gets so much screentime and focus. We're supposed to be identifying with the man, but the only thing on screen is his dick.

That's the only brass ring a woman should be shooting for in her life and everything else, all her dreams, goals, and aspirations are just bidding time until she's finally actualized as a person by becoming a wife and mother. Sarcasm is intended here. We still live in a society in which a milestone for a girl is her first SA. But our society is silent in regard to SA committed toward boys. Stats haven't really changed over the years. The true definition of the word 'virgin' from before Christianity is a woman who is autonomous and powerful. It had nothing to do with sexual penetration or 'innocence'. Sheds a light on the whole Virgin Mary as a woman who never had sex BS.

The ex stuff is so true. I was with a guy for nearly 7 years, I was his first serious gf, he'd never lived with a woman before. He had issues but I ignored them and let it all seep into a catastrophic depression where I was borderline agoraphobic (if you ignore stuff it pops up in other ways!). We broke up. Once I was out of it I saw how fucked up it was. Anyway, he - in classic immature style - went out and slept with some girl right afterwards and she got pregnant. This girl already had 4-5 kids with 3-4 men. She barely knew my ex and still had the kid. She messaged me some angry bullshit on FB because of something he'd said I guess, I don't recall, I just remember replying, "Look, this is the last lie of his I'll ever have to deal with, he's your problem now, have fun with that. I don't care." Like a year and a half later I get a message from her, "You were right. I should've listened to you. I just wanted to say I'm sorry." I didn't reply. Shortly after that, he called me, and went on this tirade about the girl. She's crazy. Cops were involved more than once. Physical violence. He wanted to see me. He was sorry. He could see now, after another relationship, how good ours was. Lol. The second he started speaking about his ex I was like, "Oh he's EXACTLY the same person! I bet he said shit like this about me!" And he would call and call. He gave up after Christmas this year. Kennie is right. RUN.

I've been arguing with people for years now about the "what counts as 'real' sex?" question. I don't understand why we have to make these weird distinctions. Sex is sex whether penetration is involved or not. Not only is it at least slightly homophobic to say "no penetration = not real sex = no loss of virginity" but I also find it sort of invalidating for victims of SA who weren't being penetrated during the assault. Imagine looking at a survivor and telling them "well it was only oral, so could have been worse" And don't even get me started on how society both glorifies but also somehow belittles virginity once you hit an arbitrary age limit. You tell people that you're a virgin in your early 20s and suddenly they look at you like you're not a real adult. Like you're missing out on a mandatory milestone that is an essential experience for all human beings. Imagine if we did this with any other activity: "Wow you've never played baseball? But you're 23? Don't you think it's time to just get it over with to get some experience?" These same people will then turn around and tell sexually active people that they're giving it up to easy. It's maddening!

On the foot fetish thing, I think what makes people disgusted by it is the association with certain producers that would poorly disguise their fetish in children's media. But even then, like. It's basically the same as dunking on pineapple pizza at this point. The joke is to act like it's inconceivably appalling, but I don't know that anyone actually reacts that way in earnest. The overreaction is the joke, I guess? Not the most original comedy but it makes some people laugh. As for pineapple pizza, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea (and that's okay) but I do think naysayers should try it with pepperoni instead of Canadian bacon before writing it off. Spicy and sweet is unbeatable.

As someone who spent years writing commentary on fanfiction through exploiting the fanfiction tropes in my own fanfiction, there's a dark hole in my heart knowing how popular these toxic love stories are. My characters were actively bad people to show that just because your faceclaim was [insert 1D member], doesn't mean their behaviour was okay. So to see this genre of toxic love i wrote satirically about while simultaneously struggling to process how damaging it has been to my views on love... hurts my soul. And the sub always hates being a sub and has to be 'convinced' (forced) into it until she can 'save' her man from his evil ways. Mostly because she's the ex, because for all they rightfully point out that she is an abuser who did abusive acts, they only _really_ get upset about the fact she slept with him and is still in his life. 50 Shades of 'she's a p*do but even worse she's a MILF" flashbacks

You're actually dead on the mark about the homophobic virginity thing, when I was in high school two of my friends entered into a lesbian relationship, and one day one says to me that they're confused, upset, and in a fight because they don't know whether they have had sex. What a terrible thing to be trying to work through when you're young and just trying to explore your sexuality! It made me completely rethink everything I'd learned about sex and virginity up to that point. Thank you for talking about the virginity issue in the romance genre. What gets me is how many women authors (or at least female presenting authors) write about the hymen in creepy and completely incorrect ways. And no one seems to consider how they're devaluing anyone who was ever molested as a child or just didn't consent to their first sexual experience. Oh, and random creepy Venus/Aphrodite facts: she was supposedly made from the foam that arose when Cronus threw his father Uranus' balls into the sea, so she would "regain" her virginity each time she bathed in the sea.
@bluepot4449
@bluepot4449 2 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, the Venus chastity/sexuality thing is a very common presentation of the goddess (see Aphrodite of Knidos, where she covers herself, arguable to draw more attention to certain areas). Keep in mind this is a presentation of her created by men for other men, which has then been taught by men. What should disturb us most is the uncritical perpetuation of this male gaze view Gabriel does. Very gross and should not be applied to women in the modern day.

As someone who's technically in academia (phd student trying to be a professor) I feel like I can offer some clarification here. 1) It's normal for professors to take grad students with them to conferences. Your committee chair (main professor you work with) often may have some discretionary funds from their research grants that they can use to help with like a hotel stay and they might take you along to introduce you to other established faculty in your field, that usually happens like once maybe twice. 2) Professors dating students has really only been taboo in the past few decades. There are several faculty who, when they were in grad school (15-20 years ago), it was considered totally normal to date and even get married to former grad students. So there's some faculty (not all, and thankfully there's a growing number of faculty who call that out for the predatory shit it is like the fucking power dynamics and the ethics what the fuck) who still don't see it as a problem. 3) Depending on whether or not this man has tenure, he probably wouldn't get fired even if the admin found out about their relationship. Once you have tenure it's VERY difficult to get fired. There was one case I'm not gonna really get into where there was *hard video evidence* of SA and it was still debated for *months* whether the professor would face *any* punishment, let alone termination. So the fact that she's actually consenting to the relationship? Yeah that man isn't getting fired even if bitchy bangs reports it.

Totally! It is concerning how his behaviour is often overlooked. At the reunion he apologized and later basically told her that if he insulted her it was partly her fault. That's the type of thing an abuser would say after hitting they victim or any form of mistreatment. Like no mister, you are responsible for the way you treated her and if she said hurtfull things to, you she is responsible for what she did. It is so manipulative and a big red flag to say that it's the other person's fault if you mistreat them.

I've been doing remote online classes because it's so much more manageable as someone who's neurodivergent and chronically ill but it means that I feel like I can do my work at anytime which means no time is ever reserved for never doing schoolwork. When I do have time off or do something other than school I'm constantly thinking about how I should be doing work or that my time would be better served working (as if I'm not a living creature with needs).

Shake just makes me so sad as someone who went through the whole self hating thing as a teenager but it is absolutely no excuse to be cruel to someone. Like I treated myself the way he treated Deep and that was still so bad. Ugh, dude needs therapy. Like he is so rude to her for no reason. White beauty standards are a thing but he is just tooo much. Sry about the wording I have a lot of thoughts but I am not thinking clearly rn.

Heard even the crew hated him so Shake was so condescending and awful that even if Shayne knocked him out right there on camera, no one would've testified just _"We didn't see nothing but it was justified"_ .😅

I think about the whole virginity thing pretty often. Even in het relationships, it isn't as if the pinnacle of sex is penetration. Most women focus on the other parts like kissing and, w/o getting too explicit, other types of stimulation. That's STILL having sex. Foreplay isn't a lead up to the big thing or an optional part, it is literally sex. It's a misnomer. Some ppl think if there isnt dick and vagina action or even fingering, that it's impossible to have sex, but that view focuses on male pleasure. That's why lesbian sex is used as an example to redefine sex - unless it's porn, you're not gonna find male-focused sex btwn women. Bcs of this I consider it misogyny, but all forms of oppression have layers so naturally it's homophobic too. It's also ableist for several reasons - some disabilities physically bar ppl from having penetrative sex, and some ppl due to trauma cannot. That doesn't make all disabled ppl sexless and virginal tho. In conclusion the typical idea of what sex is truly needs some reconstruction. It's something I think more ppl need to talk to their partners about, bcs if you dont discuss what sex means to you (both how you define it and how it makes you feel) you'll have misunderstandings and likely not figure out if you're sexually compatible

I have not and will not watch any of the movies in this saga, but the fact that I been waiting for kennie to react/comment on them… don’t know what that says about as a person but I’ll give myself the benefit of the doubt and blame it on kennies superior sarcastic funny humor commentary

"My dating life has been hilarious" I recently closed my dm's from now until eternity after I got dm'd by some girl I've never met with the IQ of a toenail clipping that asked me to tell her how sexual I am in general, I said I'm not, and she rejected that reality by telling me that's impossible and asked about what panties I'm wearing.
