"you're my everything" gets taken literally way too often in fiction and it bleeds into real life. Theres a theory as to why men tend to die soon after their wife dies (in old age). the theory goes that when the wife dies, much of his emotional connections outside of himself goes with her. Old men have such limited intimate relationships at the end of life with others than old women do, that the disruption of his intimate connection causes his quality of life/health to decline. I wouldn't be surprised if women die before men because their life-force can no longer sustain the strain of being everything to their male partners for decades.
