In the world of production, it is clearly a matter of taste. Most of the biggest name producers don't write, or play instruments or do much engineering. they just sit back and say what's good and what isn't and make suggestions. I used to think producing is engineering. It's not. Production is all about taste and having a broad enough base of knowledge to know how to improve upon ideas with different artists to help them shine. It's about having an ear that the artist can trust.

Well put. It who ever has an artistic input on a track. May it be a concept all the way to playing a lick. Or just giving a nod of approval or even just paying for the studio session. Producer means a maker of music.

Damn. Funny thing is, although I enjoy making music and art this is my strongest suit - finding what I like and don't about a piece of work, analyzing what it is that seems off to me and break down an advisement of what I would do. Idk how to ever put that into practice tho cause I have no credentials from school, and always figured its a useless opinion.

Kenny’s seriously pitting facts about what makes a producer great. Yeah you can make awesome beats, be a master at an instrument, etc. , but a producer is someone who guides an artists to achieve what he or she wants in their music. Like giving advice on song arrangements or how an artists executes vocals/instrumentalists plays in a recording, the producer dictates how a song ends up, and that’s what Kenny really means by personal taste. A good example is Quincy Jones and how he produced Michael Jackson’s discography (check out “Off the Wall” y’all, Quincy and Michael are both geniuses).

Kennys way to produce content is the exact same as these bloggers. Kenny watches Timbos stream then logs in to his twitch and starts to repeat word for word the things Timbaland just said as his own, deeply thought words of wisdom, and gets people to call him this amazingly thoughtful and smart dude. Thats so basic teacher / human behaviour. He is someone not to follow. He is cool dude but he is a follower with lack of productivness and his own thoughts, he is just good at portraying them as his own. Just like many are, especially in the music bizzzz. Cool, good human Copycats.

Bro you still didn't explain what you mean by "the taste thing"
@LfunkeyA3 жыл бұрын
it's not mere taste though. 'taste' implies you have it or you don't, which is only partially true. you still gotta put the work in, and be lucky too. develop an ear. acquired taste maybe. it wasn't a good vibe to poo on your fellow berkley people though. not everyone wants to write music, especially not the hip hop or pop stuff you're into. some people just want to get deeper into classical or just improvise. so what if you're in the 'business', to many the stuff you do is corny. i don't think anything in hip hop can stand up to legendary classical, jazz, folk/traditional music. it's a whole different thing. but that's just my opinion yo.
@adamcee72512 жыл бұрын
imho taste can be developed but its not a quantitative process and does depend on personality to a degree as you mentioned. it's a qualitative process of self-questioning, being honest w/oneself and thoughtful about receiving critique, asking/learning from others, being openminded, thinking about why a song does/doesn't work or why i do/don't like it, and ultimately growing emotionally/psychologically/spiritually as a person
@thehalochannel10002 жыл бұрын
You just said some people think what he does is corny and then proceeded to insert how you think it’s corny, implying that taste is subjective…so how can you say hip hop wouldnt stand up to your taste in music when that’s just your taste? Hip hop came after those other genres, where do you think it gets all its sounds from? You have your own opinion about what music means to you, your doing the same pooing on hip hop because you don’t like it as much. Nothing wrong with what Kenny said. Music clearly has a different meaning to him than you. The fact you called out hip hop alone? You prolly racist.
