It’s so refreshing to see someone in the industry being real about the industry. I was mad salty about my experience in the music industry. It’s cut throat and ruthless. People try to scam you at every turn and it was so heartbreaking! I look like a nobody but under another artist name I had 20 million streams and offers to open up for major artists and being approached by major major managers like Alan Melina at New Heights Ent and Carlos At Grace. But it was all people who wanted to rob from me. I dedicated 17 years of my life to music. Went all in and struggled, barely could feed myself got 4 hours of sleep a night if I was lucky went on tour and recorded vocals or made beats in a studio every night of every day and still didn’t go where I wanted. It made me hate music for the last 4 years and during COVID I fell back in love with it and started doing it again because I enjoyed it and not because I wanted to live off of it. It was the best decision I ever made. Thank you Kenny for keeping it real!

Pretty sure you could get some sweet dolla bills out of that. Same with other independent artists who came out from KZbin space or something similar. I don’t think you need those big labels anymore, you can literally do pretty much everything on your own nowadays. If big tech companies stop creating those artificial limitations and would allow independent artists to upload their music to Spotify, Apple, etc directly, in most cases there wouldn’t be any need even for those leeches like distribution companies.

Great to hear this perspective, the best advice I ever got was “if you can depend on anything else other than music for a living, go do that.” So that’s what I’m currently doing, mid 20s clearing 6 figures working 30 hours a week. Sometimes I feel like I’m cheating 😂 but the bigger struggle is the creatives around trying to sway me to be full time and take music super seriously which destroys my creative drive. Did you ever have this issue when you pivoted back to a full time job, of being judged by your peers?
@everybodyhasoul543810 ай бұрын

straight facts! Except for the retail investor thing. Those people usually day trade, and I think a large percentage of people that day trade aren't very successful. The GameStop thing was one of the few times where a large number of retail investors won. I'd recommend long term investing instead.
@holidaycomplex3 жыл бұрын
exactly. even this gme thing is exposing how day trading isn't really for everyone. as soon as people started trading collectively they decided to shut everything down talking about "market manipulation" even though 1. it's not and 2. the people doing REAL market manipulation don't face any punishment. the market isn't really free it's rigged for the rich.
@johnjohnjohnh3 жыл бұрын
Day trader here. The saying is 90-90-90. 90% of retail traders lose 90% of their account in 90 days. Also, Obama era regulations prohibit day-trading capabilities unless your account is over $25,000 otherwise you can't open, and close the same trade without the risk of being flagged as a "Pattern day trader" and subject to disciplinary actions against your account.
@actualyoutubeaccount3 жыл бұрын
@@johnjohnjohnh Not true. This is one of the most pervasive and frustrating myths out there. The Pattern Day Trade rule requiring 25K balance & limiting intraday trading is for *MARGIN ACCOUNTS* If you have a *CASH ACCOUNT*, you can trade all you want insofar as u have the balance to cover pending transactions. Before you disagree, pls look it up in depth. Ppl parrot this in articles/forums, but it's just not true. For anyone remotely interested in trading, margin isn't necessary or even attractive as you're starting off.

Ever since I was an infant and I started listening to music, I always subconsciously felt tricked. Being so little I barely remember the first music I heard in the house, was Mariachi Mexican music. My mom listened to this constantly and would have the system blaring louder than my thoughts. I remember falling in love with the upbeat tempo and all the intense happy tones of the music. I just didn't care for the vocals and could not understand the words so I would vibe to the melodies. I would walk around with these ginormous cowboy boots around the house all day, beatboxing trying to sound like a trumpet. LMAO! This video got me thinking about my early influences of music and life as an infant. I Love the way music feels and it's the only thing I feel is keeping me alive to this day. I believe sound is the primary basis of all existence. Without sound no life in existence could manifest because there would be no vibrational influence to stimulate the darkness that stays stagnant, while you close your eyes. I've listened to all types of music growing up and I just started learning to make electronic music on my own this last October. Even though I feel I have no idea what I'm doing I also feel like a mad scientist trying to come up with a new invention. Making music is so exciting, but My ideas and learning process feel like they're all over the place. I've watched lots of youtube videos just trying to learn the basics of DAWS but I felt more confused than anything. I didn't make anything sound good until I stopped watching the videos. I ended up coming up with better sounding music by being intuitve to my instinct rather than influence. The music industry is a human-made, programmed, influence on SOUND. Don't get it backwards. In other words, the music industry is just manipulation of human-life, kind of like entertainment in general./ Radio, Television, News, Social Media, business, government, the list goes on. Human beings don't need to manipulate each other. We need to set our minds free so each individual human may be at peace with their own mind, then we would not feel the need to manipulate the next man into thinking alike. The internet doesn't help that cause. lol Human beings are very confused creatures.

It's important to diversify yourself and be BOTH the businessperson and the musician. If a label gave me a million dollar loan, I'd send 80% of that towards assets and begin researching how to navigate investments. Sure, put $200,000 to my down payment for a house, a neat cheap used civic, and 2-3 years worth of common expenses. Pay the loan off with the loan! This is a lesson that can be applied to more than just the music industry. Do what you love! But also pay yourself through your business so that time works for you!

It comes down to understanding peoples intention. Intentions are everything. Why do people say things to you? Why do people offer you things? What are people doing for others that they are not doing for you? Always remember to google every new friend you make. You'll be surprised how A&R's also manage producers or how someone you're making a beat with has a manager who owns a publishing company. You NEED to know these things in order to understand peoples intentions. Don't sleep on this, it's _everything_. Sometimes people don't want you to succeed. Shit's not that scary, just be aware of how people sit on multiple seats. I'm currently in the situation that Kenny mentioned and we won't owe anyone shit. It's all thanks to knowing the intentions of people around us. Here's a tip: NEVER SIGN A "SONG DEAL" if your artist is getting signed. Never do it. It's complete bullshit, fuck that 100k check. Never, ever do it. It's them trying to put you in a corner so you can't produce for anyone else. Get a manager who cares about you and stop relying on your artist for income.

What a sad state, so many with talent and dreams of making it get slapped in the face with the harsh realities of the music industry. Need to do a bit of everything to survive! Stay strong and never give up! Be persistent!

The music industry is some demon shit. I like making music, but I want to remain independent and to not sell my soul to a label
