@@Vantage_pointsaccording to Dave Marsh’s “The Heart of Rock and Soul,” Michael McDonald wrote the lyrics on a NY-LA plane ride and was fussing with the melody when Loggins pulled up to his place for their first collaboration session. Loggins heard it, pulled his guitar out of the trunk and said “play that again because I think I have an idea.” They worked on it that day, finished it over the phone.

What man hasn't been there...or even a woman for that matter, "The song is about a man who is in love with a woman, but he's not sure if she feels the same way about him. The song explores the theme of unrequited love and the idea that sometimes we can fool ourselves into believing that someone feels the same way we do. In the end, the man realizes that he was a fool to believe that the woman loved him, but he's also hopeful that one day she'll return his love."

According to the "Yacht Rock" mocumentary, Episode 1, it was record producer Koko Goldstein who got them hooked up after Michael McDonald was threatened by Doobie Brothers band mate, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter to write a hit single or be kicked out of the band. Their first collaboration, "What a Fool Believes," was based on McDonald's chastisement of Kenny Loggins for kicking former partner Jim Messina to the curb.

This kids is the definition of REAL TALENT. no Autotune, no showing of body parts just to gain fans/followers. I maybe a millenial but I'm an old soul and I prefer artist such as this dudes and others from 60-70s

Oh man, these two voices are just soooo good together. Michaels voice is like the warmest, most comforting hug a girl could ever get. Kenny's voice is like a warmest sun shower on my skin. Heavenly!

I was 19 when this was filmed in 1993, I was into metal and hard rock. Now as I approach 50, I've discovered the power of smooth music. Girls used to scream and faint when Elvis walked onto the stage. That's how I feel watching Loggins and McDonald sing together in such a beautiful place. Their improvisation together is perfect, along with the instrumentation. When singers and musicians reach this level of mastery, they make it look so easy and natural. I've also seen Loggins freestyling with Daryl Hall. Loggins can vibe with any great musician any time, any place.

This performance was so out of this world that it created a crack in the space time continuum and Michael McDonald from 1973 was able to travel through time to come and play the sax solo.
