Amazing video! I was in Jr High when Kenny won this tournament and I was in awe. Tbilisi was almost mythical in my mind. I have never seen this footage. Thanks for posting!

I love that Dave Shultz is in the background of this match

Interesting fact - this was only a few months before Kenny beat Dave at the 88 Olympic trials. So at this point they are peak rivals. Kenny said that after this match he could tell that Dave was concerned…

What place did Dave get at this tournament?

I rolled with Kenny one time when I was 18. Fastest guy I ever met on the mat.

At this time, Kenny Monday was on the verge of finally breaking through and taking the reigns of the 163-1/2 lb weight class in our nation for the next many years. Thank you for posting this and other legendary matches! 👏 Liked & Subscribed 👍👍

He was like a big cat. Fast and powerful. When he was on his game he was very hard to beat.

He wasn't that big a cat, he wrestled 150 in college :D

Did Kenny Monday retire after the Olympics in ‘92? I noticed Schultz was the world team member again from 93-95
@CoachesCornerWrestling-ue9mt Жыл бұрын
I believe he retired for a bit. But he came back a few years after. Dave and Kenny were all set for an epic rematch at the 96 Olympic Trials. Unfortunately Dave was murdered by John du Pont a few years earlier. To see more about this watch my Netflix Original film titled Team Foxcatcher.

@@CoachesCornerWrestling-ue9mt I have watched it, didn’t realize you made it. That’s awesome. Just was always curious if Monday was retired or If Schultz beat him again between 93-95 for the world team spot.

Wasn’t Taram one of the few who actually beat Dave Schultz?

Note, Dave Schultz wearing the winter jacket with stocking hat in the gym. Thats how cold it was in there. Americans have to deal with a lot of nonsense when they compete there. No food, heat or good living conditions ect...

Amazing a competitor (Dave) in his corner. Probably the same year he was beat by him
