I'm in my 50s and I can tell anyone with an open heart that, please never take life for granted and never give up. Without all the problems we face today life would be so great. Just never give up. What i and so many others would give if we could turn the hands of time back even if it was just for 20 years. 🙏

In 1986 when Kenny Rogers sang this song the first time, I fell in love with it and have always cherished it. Now that time is almost 40 years ago and the song refers to a time almost 60 years back. Lamenting an American life we used to know not only twenty....but thirty...forty....fifty years ago. So much better in some ways then. In a thoroughly upside-down 2023 and likely beyond, we sense we will never know it again. This should have been his greatest hit, by far.

My best friend died today, her name is Susan Foote. Her Greatest Love in this life is Kenny Rogers and she actually talked with him after a Concert he played in Michigan. Susan lived on that minute, why you may ask; "Because he saw her." He looked at her and for her it was a true thrill. Her Idol saw her. For that I am forever thankful to Mr Rogers. You see I used to tease her about her Idol and that forever minute that for him was and is one of so many. You were gracious and kind Mr Rogers. I listened to that story 100 or more times and you made her happy Mr Rogers. I just listened to this collection of your Greatest hits and I must say you're darn good. Thank you and Blessed Be To Everyone for reading the ramblings of a heart broken friend. PS, I love you Susan and I will miss you every day of my life. Until we see each other again, goodnight and may your slumber be peaceful. May your dreams come true and may you be the President of his Fan Club Wherever you are. Love your BFF, Rube... "It's Ruby but she never would call me that, lol." You see she teased me too. What is a BFF to do? Be There. Always... PS,S. After listening to him all day in honor of my friend Susan, I decided this is my favorite song of his. This will help me remember Mr Rogers and I hope you know how much I thank you for that. The older I get, the more I get this song. The last time I visited my home stomping grounds, nothing was familiar at all! A lot of the community pools where I had worked as a lifeguard or swam against their swim teams in meets are gone now, the mall I hung at with my friends was demolished and rebuilt as a "big box" shopping center three years ago after being a dead mall for about five years before that, and none of the places my friends and I hung at otherwise are there anymore-the movie theaters, roller rinks, bowling alleys, etc.-they're all gone now. Don't even get me started on how all the open spaces of my youth are now developments or major roads. The old saying is true, you really can't go home again. Well you can, but you'll find that when you get there, some maniac has changed all the locks! All my friends from those days are gone too-they either got married or pursued careers elsewhere. We've all scattered to the winds, and I don't know where they are anymore or what their lives are like. And the older I get, the harder it is to make friends-is it just me, or is that another part of aging that totally sucks? Where is Doc Brown with his DeLorean when you need them?

[nods tiredly & somberly] I hear ya. I miss the old drive-ins. They used to pepper the area around here. Be they drive-in diners or movies, we had'em. Now all we have in their spaces are mini-storage places and vacant lots full of weeds. And we're expected to pack in like sardines into flashy 3D movie theaters that don't even have decent popcorn for cheap much less all the great stuff the old drive-ins had. And diners... Forget it. We're supposed to count ourselves lucky if a McDonald's opens up nearby much less anything Worth wasting the calorie count our doctors are now shoving down our throats. I get it. We're old. Why does that have to automatically equal bland, stale, tasteless, and generic in Everything we interact with? I'm all for growing old gracefully, but dammit, stop turning it into a hellish chore to do so! ~sorry. just something that's been bugging me.~

Sadly dragondancer1814, I know exactly what you mean. My husband and I and our grown kids left our hometown for good 12 years ago and moved halfway across the country. I cried knowing I would likely never see the place again but it was already so changed from what it had been when I was growing up that it didn't feel like home even then. Now nothing is the same. The town I knew is gone, it's become a stranger and so are the people in it. Even worse, though we have lived in the are we are now for over six years I still feel like a stranger here. Making friends as you get older does suck because just when you need friends most you don't have them.

I grew up in the '80s and loved the sound of this song. It really didn't hit me until my early 30s the true meaning and emotion behind it. So many places I went to as a kid, gone....so many people who helped form the person I am today, gone....old friends and classmates scattered everywhere. Just had to sell my childhood home this year that was in the family 36 years...I made the mistake of driving past it and they're gutting the interior. When I sing this song now to myself I usually sing it with the word thirty instead of twenty. What's nice is that the melody supports 20 through 60 very smoothly. And yes, I cry every time I hear it or sing it. I truly feel this is the most underrated song Kenny performed. You never hear it played. RIP Kenny. Amazing singer and story teller.

Later in life I searched it out and was reminded why I loved it so. You always had such a tender approach and honesty that you brought out in your expression, something that I try to do today as I connect with music and song. "Scroll through the radio," I have never heard that term being used for listening to the radio (too bad we couldn't control it and go backward and forward through it!) -- but I totally relate. I would sit and listen to the radio for hours waiting for my favorite songs to come on. They always would. It just required patience. Thanks for mentioning a grandpa! How hard or easy it was 'back when' probably has to do with one's individual perspective and experiences. But, if you focus only on the difference between high school life, then being thrown into the role of a new soldier on foreign soil a few months later, like in the song, I can see how the previous life was much easier. I have a relative who was in Vietnam in the mid to late 60's. He lived to tell the tale, but suffered immense health damage of all kinds, from what he went through. He's not the same person he was before. I miss the old him. No offense meant by any of that. Just my take on one possible explanation of 'so much easier 20 years ago'.

Did you mean before the tornado? Downtown Clarksville is well above the flood plain unlike Riverside drive.
@NarcissisticTimes
@NarcissisticTimes Жыл бұрын
Truthteller is referring to the flood on May 1, 2010 a rainy day soon took a historic turn. In a short period of time, a record breaking 11 inches of rain fell. Rivers began to rise and soon, much of historic downtown and low lying areas of Clarksville were under water. 'The Great Flood' or the '100 Year Flood'. However Clarksville was also hit by a tornado as well on Feb. 2018.

Lucy Wisener My sincerest condolences on your loss. My own mother passed at the end of 2008; she and my dad practically raised my brother and I on what I consider classic country (mid-70s to early-mid 90s)-Kenny and Dolly, Conway Twitty, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, Hank Jr., George Jones, George Strait, Waylon and Willie, etc. (Mom’s favorites were Randy Travis, Vince Gill, Vern Gosdin and John Anderson.) Every vehicle we ever owned when we were growing up, my folks kept the radio on WCMS FM 100 (our leading country station here in Virginia Beach, VA back in the 80s-early/mid 90s), though in the 90s they would sometimes change it to Eagle 97, which had come along at that point. To this day, that classic country remains extremely close to my heart, and is practically the only country I’ll listen to. Thanks, mom-love you and miss you.

I was listening to a collection of Country music and I heard this song and I've been repeating this song over and over again - for once, I thought it was Lionel Richie just because of the lyrics, the composure and the beats; it's just like his hit song - "stuck on you". I just decided to come to KZbin to search for the song but Kenny Rogers came in addition to the song so I was confused but decided to play it and I just to found out it was his song! Oh my! I love the song! Especially the chorus!

It's been a long time since I walked Through this old town But oh how the memories start to flow And there's the old movie house They finally closed it down You could find me there every Friday night Twenty years ago. I worked the counter at the drugstore down the street But nobody's left there I would know On Saturday mornings that's where All my friends would meet You'd be surprised to know what a dime would buy Twenty years ago. All my memories from those days come gather round me What I'd give if they could take me back in time It almost seems like yesterday Where do the good times go? Life was so much easier twenty years ago. I guess I should stop by Mr. Johnson's hardware store His only son was my friend Joe But he joined the army back in 1964 How could we know he would never come back Twenty years ago All my memories from those days come gather round me What I'd give if they could take me back in time It almost seems like yesterday Where do the good times go? Life was so much easier twenty years ago.

This is Kenny Rogers' finest performance. Completely underrated piece of music. Everything about it is perfect--vocals, music, background vocals...everything. This should have been a #1 (peaked at #2). It should also have been a bigger AC hit (as it really is an AC song, not country in arrangement). Best Kenny song ever.

I just realized that this past summer was the 40th anniversary since I heard Kenny Rogers' singing for the first time. The album was "Share Your Love" and I was only a 7-years-old boy from Finland. With the aid of my mother, I sent a fan letter to Kenny but never received a reply. However I saw perform live in 1999, it was a special night for me. I remember staying at home during that day in late-March of 2020 when I heard of Kenny's passing from a Finnish TV channel. The news literally took the breath out of me. Now I am listening to "Twenty Years Ago" and it could as well be "Forty Years Ago"; where did the good times go...? There will never be another Kenny Rogers. Thank you for all the great memories and your great voice, Kenny.

You had to love Kenny Rogers if you were like me - I was twelve when "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town" came out, and "Just Dropped In" was a true staple of psychedelia for a while. He was just a monumental presence and a voice that will never be duplicated. This song has brought me to tears many a time even going on fifty years ago.
