Ken Stabler, and the then Oakland Raiders, provided many exciting moments in the '70s at a time when NFL football had few superstar QBs throwing the ball with accuracy. With Stabler leading the Raiders, the team was always capable of changing the script and win games that seemed lost. RIP, Snake.

I hung out with Snake for about 15 minutes at Ricky’s in San Leandro right after his patch things up meeting with Al Davis in 2009. I was an assistant coach with the Raiders at the time. We talked about the team and his conversation with Al Davis. As a fanatical Raiders fan since birth, naturally Stabler was my hero growing up so it was a great honor and a dream come true to be able to meet and spend time with him in person. He was the coolest Raider that I ever met and I have been fortunate enough to meet 100s of former players from the 60’s on up to the players that I was fortunate to coach. Stabler was exactly the person that you would envision him to be. He was very humble, polite, and kind to everyone and yes. He was drinking Johnny Walker Red and chain smoking cigarettes.

You keep talking about his off field antics but in the 70’s that was pretty much the whole team if not the league itself. The fact of the matter is Stabler could ball , hungover, injured or seconds to go on the clock there was nobody as qualified as he to get the job done. With how many times victory was snatched away by Bradshaw and the Steelers (look at his off field antics as well ) the Raiders were still the team to beat in the 70’s ! Just Win Baby ! @@billallen8998 They would have beaten Denver if it weren't for that BS call on the Lyttle fumble! Tatum drilled him at the one, knocked the ball out of his hands, and Big Ole Mike McCoy was headed toward the opposite endzone. Assuming they make the extra point, that was a fourteen-point switch. A Raiders/Cowboys Super Bowl with Roger "The Dodger" against Snake could have been one for the ages, unlike Dallas putting The Broncos away with very little fight.

His countless Q4 come from behind victories consistently electrified the Oakland home field fans & resulted in roaring cheers + absolutely thunderous foot stomping that truly sounded & felt like large earthquakes under the stadium ! I will never forget how & why legendary announcer Bill King ecstatically referred to the 1970s era Oakland Coliseum as the House of Thrills, largely owing to Snake Stabler’s spectacular QB performances. Great video showing the positive impact Ken had on the NFL and Alabama. Truly a very gifted athlete and would have done well playing any of the three that he chose. I am from L.A., but was a Raider fan when they were in Oakland before L.A. . I believe Al Davis is the reason that Stabler never got inducted into the Hall of Fame until after he died. Al Davis was a hateful, and spiteful man and got worse with age. He tried to ruin Marcus Allen's career by benching him for a full season because Marcus dated Davis's daughter which Al Davis went crazy over. To make things worse, or better, depends on how you look at it, Marcus Allen still broke rushing records and other stats records even with being benched for a full season. That pissed Al Davis off even more. So I believe Davis, who had a lot of pull in the league made sure Stabler didnt get Hall of Fame while he was alive

The reason he was blacklisted from the Hall of Fame is that he told the truth in his 1985 book. I believe it hurt some people close to him and the sports press took it personal and forever held a grudge and were never going to let him in the Hall of Fame while he was alive. He was a great person who came from a humble beginnings and made a name for himself. Many of the press people who looked down on him passed judgement on a life they could not understand.

Some of Stabler's 4th quarter come from behind performances are what initially made me a Raider fan even before living in California. I don't think of football's HOF as being all that relevant to the game because of the people that aren't on their roster. The game isn't necassarilly all that subjective. It has measurements in stats that less famous players who aren't nominees for the HOF have earned. When it is subjective it has an example in that era's safeties that controlled the quarterbacks game in whether he passed down the middle or not for fear of his recievers being knocked out of the game. Jack Tatum is one such safety that is missing from the HOF roster.
