Great review, but I disagree. $400 for a decent monitor, mouse, keyboard, and maybe a Surface Dock - that's easily achievable. If I were a poor college student, I'd look elsewhere for my desk.

Too bad Surface is not really a "Pro" gadget, without a proper GPU it can only do easy work, something a 300$ tablet can do nowadays, word, excel (horrible on a small screen), browsing internet and streaming videos. They definately need to add the possibility to add an external GPU, this docking station would work great with an integrated GPU (maybe upgradable) and an SSD or HDD in it to have a proper working station when you are at the desk and the mobility of the surface when you are on the go. Microsoft is so close to create the perfect PC. Hopefully we will get it next year.

FJJ WFP think about surface book, its graphic card are in the base and it connect to the clipboard with only one surface connector. That’s why I say surface connector can support thunderbolt3.

I have to agree with this guy. If Microsoft had put USB -C WITH THUNDERBOLT in that Tablet then a GPU (with a GTX 1060 minimum) in that docking station will be a massive win. Assuming the Tablet will also be rocking an Intel Core i7 8th gen CPU or AMD 8 Core CPU - I would throw away my desktop for that combo. The Only thing I would keep is my 3 monitor setup that will be plugged into that cool looking docking station.

I've been using this dock ever since the Pro 7 Came out and The thing that bothers me is that it has an external power supply. I think with the amount of space in that base, they could have easily fit and internal power supply in there.

It is still mind-boggling that Microsoft didn't include Thunderbolt 3 in favor of using those PCIe lanes for their proprietary connection that DOESN'T support external graphics cards. A Surface Pro with Thunderbolt 3 would have been an absolute no-brainer. THIS dock with and eGPU? Perfection.

It's $400 new... and currently out of stock pretty much everywhere with the scalpers taking it well over $600. Honestly I feel like this shouldn't be a dime over $150... and though it specifies only the newer Surface Pros... I'm wondering what will happen if I throw my SP3 in there. As it stands, the original clasping SP3 dock is still the "elegant" one for me.

It's pretty sleek but undeniably pricey. I got the original dock made for the Surface Pro 3 (a.co/d/gSWKwpR) and while it lacks the main feature of the adjustable hinges, it gives me a desk experience I can work with for a lot less. When I upgraded to the Surface Pro 2017, I had to get an adapter (basically a plastic plate) since it's slimmer than the Surface Pro 3. It's still a much better dock than the second one Microsoft made, which was just a brick.

Nice review.A little too pricey to my liking but one of the few that uses surface connect but i think you can find it elsewhere around 300$.I Like the kensington lock possibility.Otherwise if you don't care about the locking ...there are other...cough..almost better and cheaper solution....To be really future proof would be to know if TB3 will be possible using surface connector with next Surface 2019 or whatever.But i suppose the usb-c thunderbolt 3 connector on the Surface would still be usable even with dock... Finally not compatible with Surface Book...
