HOG HUG?!
The Iron Giant (1999) Starring the Animating Talent of Richard Bazley, Bob Davies, Stephan Franck, Tony Fucile, Gregory S.E. Manwaring, Steve Markowski, Mike Nguyen, Wendy Perdue, Chris Suave, Dean Wellins, as well as Lauren Faust. Oh and the voice talents of Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick, Jr., Vin Diesel as the Giant, Christopher McDonald, John Mahoney and Eli Marienthal-
Directed by Brad Bird
The grand and fun story of a Boy and his Robot from Outer Space, at the Height of the cold war in 1957. And right on his tail the whole way through is an underdog FBI agent, just waiting for him to slip up.
This is such a fun film that gives action, suspense, emotion and grandeur in a package fit for any audience, which makes it all the more remarkable that this was Bird's first feature film. Bird has since gone on to work for Pixar Animation Studios, directing The Incredibles (2004) and Ratatoille (2007), and working on many other features within Pixar, including many of their shorts, and Wall-E (2008).
This is one of my favorite films, and it was hard to find a succinct scene that carried the pungency of awesome that was the film, that still fit in a small clip.
Here, Kent Mansley the FBI agent tries to give warning to General Rogard about his finding of the giant.
Lauren Faust animated sequences with Annie, Hogarth, and occasionally Dean.

Imagine that you're Kenneth Rogard right now. He's a Lt. General in the Army, in his mid-to-late fifties or early sixties, which means he's at least served in the Korean War, and more than likely in World War 2 as well. He's spent most of his adult life fighting to defend America and its allies' freedom and interests and has likely seen both the best and the worst mankind has to offer in the process. He's commanded and trained thousands of men who choose to dedicate their lives to the defense of their country, likely sent hundreds if not thousands to their deaths in that sacred duty. And as a reward for his service, he's been given one of the highest ranks in the Armed Forces and a quiet, well-paying job in DC at the Department of Unexplained Phenomena. It's basically a placeholder department created by politicians to reassure the taxpayers by letting them know the government has a response for unnatural occurrences that defy conventional explanation. So there's not much to do, meaning that Kenneth can enjoy lots of free time to relax and enjoy life with his family, maybe play with his grandchildren, and be largely satisfied and content with the life he's led. Then, as he's sitting down to enjoy an Old West show, he gets a call from Kent Mansely, an irritating, self-righteous, and greedy contractor who's yammering on and on about some giant monster that he hasn't actually seen in a little logging and fishing town in Maine. The guy doesn't have any proof aside from a questionable eyewitness and a missing car that might have just gotten stolen. Yet, he's still demanding that you-a Lt. General of the US Army, who was probably slapping Nazi's around when this posturing doofus was in Kindergarten-bring the army upstate for this seeming nonsense

Excellent and descriptive observation. Part of what makes Brad Bird the GOAT of animated film to me is the depth and believability of the characters, both main and ancillary. A lesser kids movie would’ve made Rogard either always bombastically angry or always a compassionate man, not an extremely realistic portrayal like this.

@@ricardodavis4730 I think it was really important to make the general in this way, it’s highlights that these people in power were regular people during an extremly stressful time to be in these positions of power and having these fears of the Cold War could lead them to make the worst choices when confronted with things they don’t understand or don’t have enough info on, leading to these good people to make terrible choices born of lack of info and fear that ends with massive loss of lives

@@sootythunder3111 Not to mention that at the end of the film, the General was only able to recover one of Iron Giant's screws. But even though he could've used the opportunity to examine it (although I doubt it's anything significant since it is just a screw and not a part of IG's weaponry), he instead just gave it back to Hogarth. It was a very sweet gesture that made me like him even more.

You want to know what I love about this scene that I never appreciated as a kid? This movie is set in the year 1957 as the Cold War is escalating and the Russians have just launched Sputnik. For the United States, it's a scary time, especially since the United States was at war only four years previous in the Korean War. The world is on edge, because no one knows for sure if something is going to happen, if there will be a nuclear war from the US or the Soviet Union. And in this scene, we meet General Rogard... You can see he's a three-star general, a lieutenant general. That automatically means this is a man who served in Korea and WWII as an officer of high rank, someone who has led and directed hundreds of thousands of troops through battles. He's someone who's probably seen thousands of his friends, mentors and men he's trained die in battle, to experience the horrors of war in ways that few people can even imagine, and as his reward, he has gained his rank and position through that sacrifice. We know he's in charge of the Unexplained Phenomena Department, or at least that it falls under his jurisdiction, and it's probably this small department that no one takes seriously, that its goal is just to make people feel better if they see a light in the sky or a strange object that they can't explain. It's a department with few responsibilities, and for a man like Rogard, someone who has experienced horror and loss for many years, it's an easy position to have, because he's able to spend time with his family, with his wife and kids, to play with his grandchildren and enjoy his golden years. And then Kent Mansley shows up: this stupid civilian contractor who is constantly calling Rogard up when he's trying to enjoy his free time, to tell him about how this man in Wyoming saw Bigfoot or how the housewife in Ohio thought she saw a sea serpent in Lake Erie. This guy just won't quit calling him up about these stupid cases, because every time he does, he has a "feeling" that this case will be the one, that the department will prove its use to the government, and that Mansley will finally get the recognition, respect and reward of finding the monster, while Rogard just wants Mansley to leave him alone, so that he can finally end his career with the military peacefully and with dignity. This is what I love about this scene... Pretty much all of this information is inferred. They don't say it or show it or allude to it in any way, but it can be inferred from what we see, from how they act, from how it all goes in this scene. That's the brilliance of this movie.

"Hell, you get me a photograph of this thing and I could probably get some troops out there! But you tell me you got a feeling..." Hollywood, this is a good example of how you flesh out the military. And the beauty of it is it's not even an empty gesture, the general actually follows through on it when he's given proper evidence by Mansley and takes the appropriate precautions. Most likely because he's been through it multiple times. But this time, his claims are actually true but General Rogard still won't bother listening to him. But judging by the way Rogard greets him in the telephone, it's most likely that Kent has called Rogard countless times with every "supernatural encounters" and acts as if it's confirmed. (He acts the same way in the mayor's office after only the first report about Iron Giant)

The thing I love about Brad Bird movies is the sense of realism blended in with the fantasy element but in real life, if a government agent in 50's America was convinced of a giant, sinister machine roaming Maine, it would be taken a hell of a lot more seriously back in Washington, rather than dismissed entirely! Granted, they probably wouldn't mobilise an army based on the findings of one lone agent but they'd certainly send a couple more guys to aid in the investigation. Also Kent is s deplorable government agent 😂chances are (especially back then) you wouldn't even know that you're looking at or talking to one. They'd likely be under cover and conducting a very subtle and secretive enquiry, in a bid to conceal that something major might be happening there. But Kent? He basically announces to the world why he's there and what he's looking for! 😂😂

By his age, you know he likely served through the second world war. At a point when he would've probably would've held a field commission. He's clearly no stranger to death and given his demeanor here, it's almost like an old friend coming back for a final visit. This film kept showing up in my recommended. This movie is one of the best animated films ever created. I remember watching this as a kid, then watching it again. And again. And again.

I think Mansley is a police investagator or paranormal investagator that works for US Goverment.

@@TheJabbate1 actually he is not a FBI agent I mean close enough he is actually working with the agency name UPD (Unexplained Phenomenal Department) which is under command of Lieutenant-General Rogard the general who’s Kent talking to,that is why he is willing to send the troops if he got PROPER evidence but I guess Kent knows how to be arrogant🤷🏻‍♂️

Isn't the "where you going?" scene more of a montage? I mean he's asking the same question, just different times of the day.

What makes this movie so memorable wasn't just the amazing animation & writing, but also the voice cast. I feel like every VA fit the role of each character really well & didn't sound misplaced or bad. The Iron Giant creators really knew what they were doing when making this film.

This conversations just feels so smooth and natural. It sounds like an actual conversation I could hear in a situation like this. I am not sure if it is the voice actors or the writing of the dialogue, or a combination of both, but I would love to see more of this.
