One of the most helpful things I learned about anxiety and stage freight is to not try to calm yourself down. When you try to calm yourself down you become more anxious in reality. The best thing is to be excited, happy, and looking forward to getting out and knocking it out of the park. If you miss a note or two keep rocking it and having fun. No body is perfect, besides when you have fun the audience does as well. Have fun with the crowd their there to have fun, their your friends.

I'm so glad you made this video! I went on the X Factor, but was so nervous during the 3rd audition with the thought that I could go on a live stage in front of 'professional' judges and thousands of people that I panicked and screwed up my audition. The producers gave me a 'no' and it hurt my self confidence ever since. But this video has made me feel so much better that I've started singing again for the 1st time in years. Thank you so much.

You are brave to talk about your experience. You are obviously super talented if you auditioned for the X Factor. You are no doubt way more talented than most people out there so don’t pay any mind to the haters. Keep sharing your gift with people and show them that you are a singing powerhouse. They will love your confidence and will respond accordingly. Just have fun with it. -Beth Blume 🌺

I'm an 18 year old girl and I love singing. I sing when nobody is home, or if there's just my younger sister. I have always wanted to sing in front of people, but when I stand in front of them, I just can't sing. My nerves levels are like 1250 out of 100. And it's super sad because I don't know if I can ever overcome this, I am just not that kind of confident bold personality. I want to sing in front of people so much, but I can't put myself out there. Maybe it's tied to the fact that when I was younger I lived in an environment that didn't support me and want me to succeed at all, instead they showed constant disapproval of me and it's hard to get over it, it's like it's written in me. I think those things can really be the result of early experiences.

I am exactly the same! I m lukcy that I have people who support me but until very recently I had never ‘properly’ sung in fornt of others before - maybe once at a sleepover. Even now the most people I have performed in front of with guitar was my mum, my friend and her mum. I would love to sing on stage but I just seem to freeze up and no sound comes out.

I play guitar and sing in a covers band... Stage fright... Two things that helped me with this... 1) Most people in the audience 'envy' you for being on stage... They would love to be there in your place! 2) Hitting a bum note, well, yeah I do from time to time... Maybe we ALL do from time to time... As long as you are singing with feeling that bum note becomes unimportant... Of course we want to play/sing to the best of our abilities... Hey, it's only rock n roll BUT I LOVE IT! Great videos man!

For anyone who has stage fright, read this and heed Kens words. Ken has helped me out with my public singing, particularly with overcoming stage fright, i've posted a couple of previous experiences in the comments section on some of kens videos detailing my struggle. But this time, i kicked a goal! My stage fright was a killer. I would have a few glasses of wine which took the edge off the nerves, but they were always there and unpredictable. My first public performance on a cruise was just embarrassing. I was fine at karaoke, just not singing on a big stage. My voice would be shaky and would lose power. It was horrible. Anyway, after a few more depressing performances i wasn't keen on my skills, nor the fact that i was relying too much on alcohol. But now here's where it really went crazy. I was invited to a party that was a month away, and the guy who organised it said "If anyone has any acts to do let us know". So without thinking i volunteered myself and a friend to do a duet. It was Perfect by Ed Sheeran and Andrea Bocelli. The thing was, it was a song i had never sang before. AND, my lines were in Italian..........I don't speak Italian....and it was opera!!! So i started to freak out, i considered cancelling, changing the song, chucking a sicky and using beta blockers to help out. Then i did a heap of reading and watched a few videos on stage fright including this one. I thought to myself, "alright, i'll give this a try" And here's what happened: As Ken said to do, i over prepared. Like you wouldn't believe! I downloaded a karaoke track and every day i practiced it over and over. When i was driving i would have the song on repeat and listen to how the artist was performing. The song was constantly in my head!! I memorized the lyrics IN ITALIAN!!! It was even in a couple of dreams!!! LoL. On the day of the party i met up with my co performer and we ran through it a couple of times. He was happy with it, and was keen to do it. However Not only had i NEVER sung in another language before, but i never sung with another person on stage before! First time for everything, but now i was starting to worry about letting my friend down if i sucked!! Then I remembered something Ken said to me on another comment, about replaying the movie in my head of when i had the crowd cheering me at karaoke. To visualize myself doing well, not stuffing up. So i started doing that, i wouldn't let myself think of any stuff ups, i kept visualizing myself singing well and the audience enjoying my singing. That i was there to entertain them, not save their lives. As per usual i had a little bit of wine to help out as well. I also remembered another thing i read, and that was to tell myself, "I'm not nervous, i'm excited!!", and i kept doing that! And the third thing i did, was, when i walked out on the stage, i looked straight at the audience, and gave them all a huge smile! I don't know how that exactly worked, but it just dissolved any excess nerves i had. I was still a bit nervous, but it was more of an energizing nervousness this time, instead of a crippling one. I had my galaxy tablet with the lyrics in front of me, and i could not have prepared any more than i had! While my friend was singing his part i had a few sips of a warm honey, lemon, ginger drink Andy Serkis calls Gollum juice, went up to the mic, and let fly. The moment i started singing, the audience started cheering, i tell ya, that just boosted my confidence like you wouldn't believe! I was supercharged! We ended up singing it without any problems! I'd have to say it was the first performance i was happy with!! I got some great feedback from the audience as well which was super encouraging!! Including from one person who asked if i had classical training!!!! This is coming from someone who needed to consume large amounts of wine to get up on stage in order do make me as numb as possible whilst still remaining coherent. Someone whose hands would shake so bad the audience would be thinking im using the microphone as a Maraca!! Stage fright sucks!! It's potentially crippling to a performer, and while you may never completely lose the butterflies in your stomach, if you follow Kens advice, and apply what helps other performers, you can train those butterflies to fly in formation!!! Thanks again Ken!

First time I ever performed singing and playing acoustic was for friends and family, and turned my back to them, I was so nervous! Playing in a band a few years later, I realized that one gig is the most nervous and most comfortable event in my life at the same time. Nothing scarier than the start of a show, and nothing more relaxing and gratifying than nailing a song that the audience feeds off of.

Is There Really Such Thing As "Stress Free Singing"? I see many vocal coaches (and their students) promoting the idea that "there should be no stress while singing" and therefore frustrating the heck out of singers who think there is "something wrong with themselves" because they can't, over night, achieved this "stress free" singing. (this also gives a vocal coach "tribal knowledge" to keep you coming back to them as the only one who has the answer to this elusive concept) This is nonsense and here's why: Singing is like a sport. And with any sport, it's not the absence of stress, it's the management of stress that makes a great athlete. Think of it like this: When Lionel Messi is going to goal, do you think his body is "stressed?" (Anyone who says it isn't has never played a sport before). But Lionel has learned the art of training his body and mind for that moment when it's time for him to step on the gas, take on 3 players and score what "looks" like an "effortless goal." But you can be assured, it was not done "without effort" or without "stress." Lionel achieved this through training his technical abilities as well as building stamina and muscle memory to achieve this consistency. Now it is true that some styles of singing require less stamina than others and therefore can be accomplished with less strength training. In other words, singing a light pop song requires very little "strength" in the sound whereas singing a heavy rock song often requires incredible strength and stamina. This is also true for those (like myself) that want to push their "limits" and abilities to be all they can be. This of course requires more "effort" and technical training. With that said, there are many stages to building this "stamina" and it's ok to "find yourself" as one first starts with "damaging street singing" (with total stress) and going through the different stages of learning how to manage this stress away form the voice through correct training. If I didn't show the different stages of this process, and only showed "perfection", people would never learn that these people are all human, having to work on their craft just like yourself.

As I've grown, I've learned that the calmer you are and the less focused you are on hitting ever note, run, etc perfectly the more organic and natural sounding the performance will be. Meditation is extremely important as well. Creative people tend to have all types of things going through their minds right before they record, sing on stage, etc and the clearer the mind is, the more comfortable and less distracted you will be.

As a Christian, I offer my take on stage fright. First, thank you for your video. It points toward specific issues for me to work on. Second, many Christians need something from the Bible to actually execute their plans to get over things like stage fright. One Bible scripture many Christians use, me included, is one portion that talks about spiritual warfare, and I imagine myself putting on Bible times Roman army-type armor before fear hits. This is a quickie post to this KZbin post, not a Bible study, so I will only touch on a few things of many. One is to imagine putting on combat shoes of peace. It is God's Will for me to be at peace. Looking at that right the opposite way, it is not God's Will for me to have dysfunctional fear. I imagine myself picking up and using another piece of armor: the sword. Imagine using a combat dagger, striking quickly and decisively when fear hits, using a specific scripture that helps me to combat that fear at that time. I hope this helps someone.

I needed to read this! I’m a great singer-within myself and everyone else, but I just started singing in this new church. I love God and know my gift is from Him, but my first time singing a solo in this church was horrible-to me. So many thoughts were running through my mind and I failed-according to my expectations. Many members came to me afterwards saying how blessed they were-I was shocked. Moral of the story, God got the Glory even through my internal issues. Thanks for your Biblical response.💜

I don't have 'stage' fright but I find it very difficult to sing in front of people even though I love to sing when I'm alone. At one point in my life I had developed the confidence to sing in front of other people, but then I overheard someone in another room saying something about my singing. The stupid thing is, I don't know what they said, whether it was positive, negative or indifferent but my *brain* assumed that it was negative and I lost the confidence I had. Between then and now I have occasionally had compliments about my singing if people heard it- my girlfriend always tells me how much she *loves* my singing and wishes I would do it more but I still wouldn't do it- I'd already formed a fear of singing and my brain wouldn't attribute any weight to the positive comments I *know* I have received because of the one possibly negative comment I *think* I got. It's ridiculous! Anyway, thanks to you Ken I am starting to break out of that fear- I feel more confident that I know what I am doing after I watch your videos and apply what you talk about. Your clear love of singing is infectious and shows me how much fun I could be having. And I am gradually re-building my confidence through exposure by practicing my singing with my girlfriend in the room, so I am getting more comfortable with my voice again and she is happy too!

I am so glad you suggested going to karaoke to get used to singing in front of other people. So many 'professional' singers look down on karaoke as playing at singing. My own level of confidence has greatly improved because of recording myself singing (I never heard my own voice until I was 50) and doing karaoke.

As you said, repetition is key and knowing the people that come to watch you are there because they support you... (alright, sometimes they have choice and they just have to sit through the thing) I love to sing (k.. notice I wrote I LIKE, not that I'm a great singer) and I can just give myself to singing fully when all alone. It's a place where I would feel free. My stage fright was so bad that when I would sing somewhere in closed quarters and someone would stand outside at the door, I would feel it and I would right then stop singing. Imagine a person like that singing for an audience. :-) Well, now I do. Still I will not say that I'm a great singer, but when people hear me sing they will really encourage me to sing or do something with that gift. So, sometimes I will sing in church. First time I really messed up but people encourage me to keep going, so I figured they kinda liked it or at least they don't mind, so I started to sing a little more often. I know for sure I've improved, but I still get nervous when singing and I can't hit the high notes all the time when in front of people, but I keep practicing. I'ld say, don't give up. Don't just do it for the people, don't try to show how good you are, but rather enjoy your God given gift and try to share. :-)

But I go every week to try and shake this thing, I'm hoping it will get better. So tired of making a fool out of myself. I thought I over prepared for this week, but it looks like I need more, I'm a personal trainer so all of my clients volunteer to let me sing in front of them that's singing the same song about 12 times a day to new people..lets soo if this works by Friday karaoke night! :D Thanks for the video

More Than Muscle .With Michelle McDaniel Michelle, I want you to try something. I want you to focus on silly songs that are non threatening.(like happy birthday, Disney's "Let It Go" or maybe other "fun" silly non threatening non serious singing songs. Do this with regularity and then migrate to other songs like Take It Easy by the eagles. Again. silly cam fire-ish songs that were not meant to be taken seriously. Fat bottom girls or whatever you have done in the past you didm;t take seriously. Do this for a while and then in the midst of it, add in a song in the middle of the pack that is a bit more serious. You will find that once you are "in the groove" of doing this, and the more you do it, the nerves will start to disappear. In fact they would probably go away if you did Karaoke every day, but that is not practical. This is one things that will help you (as silly as it may sound ha ha).

great vid! also another thing about building confidence is to look at it like a skill. We aren't confident about playing tennis against a pro, but we'd be confident about hitting a ball against a wall. if you're unconfident, step it down a level to a level you're comfortable with. when that becomes easy we step it up to the next level. perform in front of a few friends who you're comfortable with first before taking it to the clubs if you aren't feeling good. thanks for the vid Ken!

That's very cool! Slow songs usually enjoy energy (fun) through the passion of the performance. To make it "fun" sometimes can make it "not serious" which may diminish the authority of the song and performance. I find it "fun" when I have nailed it and make people cry (ha ha)

This was really helpful to me as I was suffering with the anxiety and sickyness especially when going for gigs. I think it's partly due to also knowing you're not the best, but if it's a passion from the heart you do it not to get boo'd off but to express and create. It's good to know it genuinely is anxiety. I have got over it quite well now, not pushing beyond a foundation and following the laws of singing.

I used to love singing in highschool. I'm 42 now and don't sing anymore because in my 20's I was just randomly singing a song with the radio and someone said I was tone deaf. So I quit singing and practicing after that. Now I feel like whenever I try singing again there's a hesitancy in my notes where they break apart. I think it's because I'm scared. I would love to be able to just belt out a song one day even if it's just by myself.

If we understand that we are called to sing not because we must show how great we are,but how great Christ is, we'll never be afraid to sing :-) Just start to fear God and feel His love to you and you will never fear people :-) He made us to worship Him,not only with singing ,but with all things we do in our life:-)

Awesome tips. These are very helpful. Another good point would be that if someone actually does "boo" a performer, they are either: a) closely associated with that performer, or b) don't have as good of taste as they think they do. In the second case, the "boo-er" is unimportant. If they don't like your music, they can go listen to someone else, and will not be any more than a blip in the overall scheme of things.

Ive been doing your course for a year and I'm at volume two doing great! I'm currently practicing around eight hours the week but I kick my family out of the house. I'm not saying they don't support me but they criticize heavily. My sibling tells me I'm not good (although I am) and my mum makes fun of the singing exercises. I mean... I have practiced a lot of quality hours but that's just because I kick them out of the house. But again I wish I has the courage to do the scales (chest and bridging) while others listening to me but I feel I can't. My point is that many times our loved ones can be toxic and discourage us and I desperately need the strength to overcome this fear because I can't always be alone while practicing

I'm sorry your people aren't supportive. This requires that YOU, not THEM, take control of the situation mentally and emotionally. You need the thick skin, grit and determination to make the right choices for you. If family and friends don't get it there's nothing you can do about it. History is made by the ones that follow the beat of their own drum. Be yourself. Ignore the critics, I do.

Great video. I had some major stage fright. Haha. I remember being afraid to even do skits in classes. I wanted to become a musician later on in life and my first live performance was in front of my entire high school in our gym. Before going on I was nervous to the point of shivering. Haha. I wasn't singing like I do now, but I was the lead guitarist. When we went on, all that fear kinda just went away, and I thought "Hey, this is awesome!"

If I have practiced, and have learned all the lyrics, and adlibs, then I am not nervous. It is only when I have not been given ample time to study the song, or get put on the spot; that I feel saliva welling up in my throat. I know for me, I've always been super self-conscious of my voice since I was a kid. Despite taking chorus classes for two years when I was in high school, I pushed myself in the background a lot because I was afraid of finding out I have a terrible voice and pretty much making a fool of myself in front of my peers. I think another thing that drove me to stopping was hearing a recording of myself jamming to something on one of my playlists, and just how...bad it was. To me, it's sort of like learning why you shouldn't touch a hot stove, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to overcome those feelings.

When I experience stage fright, it's because of what I tell myself. I literally sabotage my own performance. I become hyper vigilant to any percieved goofs which only serves to make that goof actually happen because it breaks my concentration. Makes sense....... try telling everyone in your audience that you love them and that you what you are about to do, you are doing for each and everyone of them. Greats the show off to a nice friendly start and lets everyone know we're here to enjoy life.

I write original songs and I love singing, but every time it comes to singing on demand in front of someone, I can’t do it. I know it’s possible to overcome stage fright because I used to be super shy and couldn’t speak in front of anyone publicly which I can now do pretty easily, and that was just by doing it a lot. Singing has always felt like a much more important and terrifying thing though - the next step up. The most people I have ever performed in front of is my mum, my friend and her mum which I did actually enjoy but I messed up a lot. I wanted (and also didn’t because stage fright) to get singing lessons but they are so expensive and I think in some ways I’d be better off just going to karaoke and open mic nights. I’m gong to uni next year and was hoping to join a music society to build my confidence but I will have to force myself!! I’m thinking of just making a KZbin account under an anonymous name and doing covers. It’s nice to know other people are the same with singing and stage fright though

I am ( I think so) a singer for many years now but when it comes to performing I get nervous even the day before :-(And I have done several booked performances in public with several bands..I am not able to stay cool inside because I am so afraid to look stupid on stage or that I forgot lyrics(even if I now songs for 20 years).So many people always tell me--you dont have to be afraid because your good...etc..but when I get some notes not perfect(only for me because no one else says there is something wrong)I shame myself for that :-(..I have 4 videos up on my youtube to look at -and everytime I watch them I analyse myself and think-why the hell can I be more relaxed -and I really wanna be cool and funny..But I am so concentrated to make everything right because I think the people came to get some good music to listen to...:-( I dont have a solution for that:-(((

I'm terrified of singing in front of people. I occasionally have heart palpitations it's so bad. A few people have told me I can sing, (there are a couple of times I've actually been able to sing in front of others) but I'm still unsure of my abilities. I have experience playing the flute (if that helps at all) but have never had a singing lesson.

What about cases where you, each time you perform something, become more afraid? Every time I've done something on stage, the phobia has increased because I feel I fail and only validate my own fear. I've never gone on stage and come off with a sense of mastery, and the instruments I've performed on stage haven't been vocals. Singing I don't even dare to practice unless I know there are absolutely no one at home, all the windows in the house are shut and the door is locked and I'm practising in a room that's not facing the street. When I've lived in apartments I never practised, because I felt the neighbours would hear me. This turns into a really bad cycle, because with so little practise (it's not often I feel it's safe to practise at home, and else than that I only have one lesson with a teacher per week) I never build enough confidence to trust my own voice, ear or pitch, and I never really build those skills either. I really enjoy singing, and have written song lyrics that bands want me to sing and perform with them because they like the lyrics and want to do a project with me, but I don't feel as if I'm good enough (considering how little training I get my feelings are probably correct) and even the thought almost makes me panic. What happens when I try to perform something (I've performed with piano and flute solo on smaller concerts arranged by my teacher(s) and with school) is that I get so nervous because I know I'll lose focus and mess up at some point, and when I do I tear down and shake even more, causing me to mess up more, getting me more nervous, etc. I have panic attacks before going on stage and mental breakdowns afterwards. Going on stage for me consists of panicking, failing then finding somewhere to be alone so I can finish my breakdown and crying there. And it gets worse every time, and the fear gets stronger every time. I also have an issue with concentration, making the few times I do feel it's safe to practice singing kinda useless because I zone out and don't get much practice done. I even zone out during my lessons with my teacher, and I do it a lot. I probably lose focus 4-10 times while singing through a song, and I miss the notes when I lose focus. So I know that if I were to sing on stage I'd at least miss notes the same amount of times I do during lessons, but probably more because I'd be so nervous that all my focus would go into trying not to cry. I'm really lost, because I love singing, but my fear and concentration issues are making me plateau in development because practice is either not happening or is useless and the lessons aren't often enough to substitute, and the fear and lack of concentration makes performing impossible. There's a whole bunch of issues related, and my phobia of performing applies to all aspects of my life. I refuse to solve a math problem with someone watching in case I do it wrong, I don't draw while others are present, I don't let anyone see what I'm writing in case it's bad. And the concentration issue prevents me from actually ever feeling a sense of mastery, which obviously makes the fear worse. This is probably a lot more complex than just stage fright, but anyway... if you have any advice I'd be grateful.
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 9 жыл бұрын
Tyra Elizabeth phobias of any kind can be quite real. By far and away the best way to beat them is to face them head-on. The more repetition you have when dealing with a phobia the more the phobia decreases. Sheer repetition alone will help with this. If you have long stints between performances this can increased anxiety. If you literally go bonsai and start booking performance after performance consecutively you will see a dramatic decrease in anxiety especially if you're repeating the same performance over and over without any changes. Once you master one thing with confidence (making sure it is simple enough to perform easily) then you can gradually move on to more complex pieces. I know some people are more extreme cases than others and I know that there are many things that can be done to help us look at fear in a different way. If you sang happy birthday with your family, I doubt you would have anxiety about that. But sing the national anthem in front of a football stadium of people you might have extreme anxiety. But I'll bet if your whole family were to sing the national anthem with you off key joking and having a good time you would not have anywhere near or possibly any anxiety. We need to first start with basic building blocks and work our way up, especially when dealing with extreme phobias.
@TyraElisabeth

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy I do actually get anxiety singing happy birthday with people (I don't really have a family, I'm a foster kid and move around). I can't even practice with anyone in the house, going on stage is way too big step because, like I said, all it's done so far is getting me huge throwbacks. I feel like I can't jump from A to F, that'll only land me somewhere where I don't even know that A is the first letter of the alphabet.

I agree that there is always stress in singing. I have loved singing since I was a kid but I seem to be afraid to do so in public or in front of people. (Pre-recorded singing like on Smule sing app is another thing so I don't have trouble there) I remember I tried to do on a university stage and I was so nervous that it didn't come out like how I had practiced, like, I lost control of the voice after a few lines 😵
