"Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway" is a self-help book from the 90s I believe (in case you were wondering.) Thanks for the pep-talk!!!

Singing inherently involves vulnerablity, and for many vulnerablity is scary.

thank you so much for this video! this is literally the thing I needed! I can sing on my own or with my vocal coach but in front of people or when I know someone can hear me, I become dead silent... I am so scared it's incredible! Thank you so so much! I now have this video on speed-dial on my computer so that next time I'm scared I can quickly watch this and do it anyway! I wish I could give you a big thankful hug right now :)

Once you get started and start to feel the passion of the song...the fear gets dominated by the passion. I was a dancer on stage off and on for yrs and I always freaked out just before a performance. Not really freak out like panic attack but my heart would be racing. Not only that, but I always critiqued my performance every time. Even if I got compliments on how well I did, I still critiqued myself. My gramma who was a singer for many yrs, I asked her why do I always critique every performance. She told me it's better that you do that instead of getting too confident, and that's when you don't try as hard which leads to mistakes. Singing is much trickier than dancing bec with dancing I could dance the fear off. With singing your emotions show in your voice so it's much harder to hide. But like I said I have sang before and started off somewhat nervous but as the song went on, the power and passion of the song hit me and it was a done deal at that point and the passion was like a vocal tornado LOL. We tend to hold back when we sing due to fear also...instead of letting the song carry us beyond the fear. If we imagine the song being a flowing river, and we are in it, it can carry us gently through the current.

I can't even sing when I'm alone ! It's like the sound won't go out!!!! Help please! I really want to express myself I write songs play instruments but I just CAN'T get a sound out!!! 😭
@嵐影湖光-r9z6 жыл бұрын
Have you tried vocal warmups?
@UnicornWithGlasses Жыл бұрын
I struggle with the exact same thing.. Even when I'm alone I really want to sing, but can't seem to get a sound out.. Though, some years ago, I wasn't really scared of it, like, when I was with my friend who liked singing I didn't really mind singing. There was this difficult part of a song she practiced for hours before she was able to sing it, and after she showed it to me, I tried and succeeded on the first try. But now I'm very scared of even trying to sing because I'm afraid I’ll fail or disappoint myself, so I've basically decided to give up even before trying. I don't really know if I am a good singer or not, but the fear of disappointment and discouragement is still there. I know I can try to sing right now if I want to, but no sound seems to come out..

I love the fact that this video was uploaded a day before a presentation I have to give in the class of the language I'm studying. I HATE giving presentations. Talking in front of people petrifies me. I was already trying to work on that but your video definitely gave me some courage. You're absolutely right, I need to not let fear get the best of me. Thank you so much, seriously. :3

Love that accent! I have a fear of hearing my own singing voice. I know I can sing because I can sing in the car when the music is loud and hit all of the notes, but for some reason I'm almost afraid to hear my own singing voice..

I needed this! I recently (as in, like, a few days ago) decided after many months to major in music beginning next semester. I've been singing in choirs for a few years and my professor/choir director really urged me to pursue music as a major. But the main thing holding me back is my performance anxiety. Just the THOUGHT of singing solo at a recital or whatever absolutely terrifies me to my very core. But I love singing more than almost anything else and I know I have to do it. Hopefully I can sing through the anxiety and do well

+Avery Simmons You will do well. Go for it...you only live once ; )
@KerriHo8 жыл бұрын
Hi Avery- this level of stage fright is more common than you may know. But the best thing to do is to go out and do it! Go out and do Karaoke a few times to get used to singing in front of people.. this can be a great way to get the jitters out. The more you do it, the more confident you'll become and just have fun with it.

I have a huge performance in a London theatre at the end of this week. Was just feeling a whole ton of fear when I put this on. Thank you Kerri for reminding me this is normal when you care about something, and of course I'll do it. All the best in your work too.

Great pep talk ;) It's so true that we only meet fear when it's something that matters to us. I like to tell my students that FEAR + ACTION = COURAGE. If you weren't afraid, it wouldn't require courage! I like how you reference using the fear to propel you forward. thumbs up, my friend.

I haven’t posted my first singing video or sang solo on stage yet, just singing alone and in quiet places... but I’m planning to at least release singing videos eventually, but this fear keeps getting to me 😓.. I keep flaking on myself, after watching this, I realize this is something I must do even if I’m fearful of criticism and judgement and of my own skills, because it’s something I love doing and don’t want to jeopardize it. It gives me joy and I love singing, it’s just something very personal to me and is something that has helped me grow mentally, musically and as a person. I’ve wanted to do this for years now but I think this year I’m ready 😌.. I must take my first tiny step in order to keep taking more steps to my goal, I can’t get to my goal if I never take any steps toward it. Gotta FEEL THE FEAR ✊🏻😖!!!

Been a while for me, Digging the longer hair. This fear issue is what has been holding me back. I will just order this course and rock it, as best as I can. Cheers Kerri! Will order before mid November or would the Songbird Tribe be better lol or just do both! I will Feel the Fear and step into it.. Great advice! Life is too short anyways.

A lot of singers struggle with this Josey. Joining a choir can be a great way to get more comfortable with singing in front of people and gain confidence, but in a group of other singers. And go out and do karaoke with some friends! It's low key and now pressure, just focus on having fun. The more you do it, the easier it will become! =)

I feel this did not provide a solution to the fear problem. I put myself out there and you can hear the fear in my voice. It is disappointing to execute such a weak performance when I know I can sing better than that.

whenever i am home i can do the vocals warmups pretty ok for a considerable time.. but then when am proceeding to actually sing out my fear always stops me. its like wht if my voice cracks nd sounds bad nd my mom nd brother nd neighbours laugh a lot!! loll its so annoying. everyday am like ok i wd do the warmups for few days then sing properly bt the fear is always always defeating me. its crazyy!! I wd leave the song halfway nd loss breath support at higher range. gosh am in total mess...
