I'd like to know what some of you have to say about vocal coaches, like the ones who have posted no songs on KZbin of themselves singing really difficult songs, yet they can't stop hanging around my videos like vultures with their phony come-ons! Why aren't they posting videos of themselves demonstrating how well their vocal programs work by demonstrating with their own voices? I think you probably know why...

Hi Ken, I have a vocal coach, and she seems to know a lot of technical things, and corrects me right away, but when I ask her to sing smt for me, she just does Nainainai or mamama, somehow avoiding singing, weird!!! though I have a question, how long minimum should last a vocal training per day? Thnx for your great videos :)
@Jenghis_Khan8 жыл бұрын
The vocal coaches I've heard from all gave me lessons and advice in person. I can't say for sure whether the techniques they taught me were better than those you teach (because I'm not qualified to make such a bold statement), but I do think that if one were to put in the hard work and practice using those techniques, he would get better eventually. To what extent, however, is beyond me. While I don't know much about actual technique, I would like to think that there is more than one single way to get better at singing. One thing for sure though, the constant practice and hard work is always necessary. So the only coaches I would say are frauds are those who claim they can make you better without having you work for it. Just my two cents :D
@kentamplin8 жыл бұрын
Hi, Falco! If you're able, you should be singing at least an hour per day, five days a week. That will keep you progressing, if you're following a good course of training. All the training in the world won't help if it's not really worthwhile. Find a good source of legitimate vocal methodology and study it correctly, and you will do well.

All I have to say...... I have been playing music professionally for over 35 years as a bassist and backup singer sometimes lead vocalist. Somewhere down the line I was prodded into fronting my own trio as lead vocalist. Stumbled on to your you tube videos which lead me to purchasing your course. 4 months later and still working on the opening segment- my fellow musicians have been remarking on a noticeable change in my sound. Spreading the word......

Awesome, chaslaurie! You wouldn't believe how many of my students have started out only to get better at backup vocals in band opportunities, and then by random acts and turns of events, end up FRONTING their bands or being the Lead Vocalist/Guitarist or Bassist or Drummer/Keyboard player. It just happens some time when the Standup Lead singer throws a tantrum and walks out, thinking everyone will crawl to them and beg them to return. Instead, the band goes on to be more successful than EVER with the former backup singer ROCKING the HOUSE! You're only into the very beginning portion of my course and already getting compliments. Just wait till a year has gone by! You'll See! 😊

Thank you for being here Ken! Thank you for being the real deal and the voice of reason amongst all the noise! Could also be worth mentioning that if people are prepared to do the work, they're SO much better off getting your course, rather than a local singing teacher who really has no real experience/achievements but can sing ok themselves. Just because you can see them in person and get feedback doesn't mean you're going to the right tips. I've been given tips that were counter-productive, and you can easily spend more in 3 or 4 lessons than the cost of Ken's course!! A millionaire doesn't get an accountant on 50K a year to manage their money. You want to grow, get someone who knows what they're doing. Treat your voice like gold, make a commitment to yourself, to do the work and be inspired by the fact that you're getting the right tips from the right person. ~ KVTA Student :)))

Just throwing this out there: Ken's course took me from terrible (no singing experience) to where I wanted to be (healthy Eb5 belts was my goal at the time) in just over a year. My channel has plenty of my own music on there and there wouldn't be any if I hadn't taken the leap and grabbed Ken's program. I totally agree with that! I actually originated from the beatboxscene and I morpht into singing. And for me it wasn't that different. When I learned throatbass the first time (it's that deep rumbling note that Mongols do.) I needed a week to get the technique down I needed 4 weeks in order to learn how to hold this note. And I needed 2 years in order to be able to pitch my throatbass (if you don't know what throatbass is. Just replace it with the distortion you learn on KTVA. It's not as Operatic as throatsinging but the techniques are closely related.) For inhaled Epiglotis phoation I needed a month in order to be able to do it without choking. And now after a year I'm SOMETIMES able to controll the pitch. And in order to learn how to sing polyphonics I needed a week in order not to get dizzy. So that took some time. And I actually hate those "quick tipp" last time I got a short where someone "screamed at me" and told that this was falsecords and I thought "nope that's a mix between whistle register and fry vocals" I mean he also was pretty hoars in all his Videos and still people ASKED him how to do it. I mean not to be mean. It's "the proof is in the singing" but when the "disproval already is in the speech" and you learn from that person. I can't help. Oh and I found someone who teaches the importance of the right technique by using his own Vocaldamage as a warning what could happen to the Voice. I mean it wasn't the holly grail of singing tutorial but I appriciat the aproach. But when it comes to learning it. I go to Ken tamplin, Rick beato and sometimes Chris liepe (last one mostly for "how to arange your shit") Then I met someone who tried to tell me that all this breathing stuff in singing is overrated (I mean I use breathing patterns in order to give my voice an intruiging rythm and sometimes sing pretty fast. And in beatboxing I learned how to inhale mid beat with a bunch of techniques which ain't possible for sing and he wants to tell me breathing makes no difference.)

Personally I have never been to one, but Just from what I have heard. If I had or wanted to make a decision to go to a vocal coach to teach me how to sing I would never go to one who could not prove what they said was true. If I were in a situation where I could have a vocal coach I would be looking for someone who proves that what they do does work. For example. I'd want to see their students in action. Just not be told about them. I'd want to see the vocal coach sing himself. In short I would not go to any of these other yahoo's out there that just want to take your money and that is it. I personally want to thank you. You have not only shown and proved that what you do does indeed work, but you are compassionate towards others and have a very kind and caring heart. If I could ever do this. It would be you I'd go to. Simply because anything worth having is worth working for!

I love the adjuration from Ken that, "perfect practice makes perfect"--I heard the same from a world-class harness driver who coached me in harness driving, whose own driving coach insists on practicing perfectly. Otherwise, one is apt to learn poor habits that require energy to unlearn; harming one's voice is best avoided from the outset. Hey Ken. I'm a metal vocalist. I've been doing heavy vocals for almost 15 years. I just want to say, people like you are rare. I remember one of my first gigs I did, I spit blood afterwards, that's how bad I was and if I didn't learn as quickly as I did I could easily have lost my voice or worse. You are correct, heavy vocals is a gladiator sport filled with too many kids. Too many kids look to bad advice and thinking traditional, and well informed training is beneath them. I wish we had more of your kind in the metal scene. I see kids blowing out their voices all the time because they're lazy. No other way to put it. Laziness! To do hard vocals is a long hard road, and no trick will teach it to you over night. I had to do traditional training. I learned opera and "sissy" vocal techniques so that could understand and control that part of my body. Learning to sing la traviata propperly taught me more than the zen of screaming ever could. Ken, you are a gentleman and a scholar. Even if this comment never gets read, I would just like to add my two cents.

The problem with finding a good vocal coach is that if you don't understand correct vocal technique, you don't really know what to look for. Whilst I have no doubt that you are an excellent vocal coach Ken, unfortunately, having had commercial success or clients with commercial success doesn't necessarily prove that a teacher is proficient in correct vocal technique. There used to be a very well known singing teacher in London called Ian Adam who Andrew Lloyd Webber thought was the best thing since sliced bread, but who in actual fact was one of the biggest charlatans in the business. He was the teacher responsible for wrecking Sarah Brightman's voice, but was also one the most respected vocal coaches there was. I was very lucky to have trained with a lady called Helena Shenel who in my opinion, was one of the finest vocal coaches there ever was, other than maybe Edgar Herbert Caesari. She was the coach responsible for rescuing Shirley Bassey's voice when it died after years of straining through bad singing, and the throat specialist who Shirley saw used to see the casualties of Ian Adam style badly trained singers on a daily basis who all saw their problems disappear when they were sent to Helena. I have wanting to get my voice back in shape recently but Helena is no longer contactable which I suspect means she may have died and I cannot find a teacher in London who is a patch on her. I have been ringing around and it is so easy to tell whether a teacher knows what they are talking about by asking simply questions about vocal technique, and so few really understand correct vowel modification or just how damaging to the vocal chords nasal resonance is, or why that is so. It is a sad state of affairs, but so many people are being ripped off by charlatans who simply do not know what they are talking about, and if it wasn't for the fact that I have knowledge of correct vocal technique, I would have found myself in exactly the same situation.
@kentamplin8 жыл бұрын
You make some good observations and comments, Spiritual... Commercial success can be fleeting, and sometimes comes to those who perhaps didn't "earn" it like others may have... And charlatan coaches can be a real problem. There are many imposters.
@SpiritualInsanity018 жыл бұрын
I have given up trying to find a decent teacher in London now and was thinking instead of getting your "how to sing better than anyone else" course as I really just need vocal strengthening exercises. @kentamplin6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, these "experts" take advantage of people's lack of knowledge, and the desire to get something fantastic "effortlessly" and at a "discounted" price. Then, as they get entangled in the sales web, the price starts going up from what was originally offered, and the promised results never come. Because these people can't even sing a whole song themselves, let alone sing hundreds of songs and teach you how to sound great.

The difference is that Ken genuinely cares about your voice. The course will work for you if you dedicate yourself to it. You will see benefits from the first week and will continue to grow. But it's the gift that keeps on giving because you never stop discovering new things. These techniques are for life. That is what you want. It takes time to really get there though thats the truth. And you will get there. From a two and half year student. And i am still as dedicated as I was on day one. That's the truth.

Finally, I've heard for the first time on KZbin that great singing will come in 6-12 months time with the hard work. Before I have heard promises of success in 2, 3 months and such. It seems like your statement is more legit than others. Even though I tend to think (and I am just a beginner who exercises 1 hour 5 days a week ) that learning to sing at the professional level takes 2 years to master, similar to a time for getting associate college degree. Otherwise, everybody could learn how sing great in no time. Thanks!
@kentamplin8 жыл бұрын
True, sergen, and it's no secret that my students say that the improvements keep coming year after year when they keep doing my exercises and following my techniques. The best is yet to come when you keep following the right program. You need to choose wisely and stick with it. You will be learning for the rest of your singing life... unless you get a bogus program. If that happens, you'll be losing precious time.

Hey Ken, I had a question about your Vocal Course DVD box set. I'm 14, and I aspire to make a career out of being a singer-songwriter. I have found your short videos very fruitful in my singing practice and I was thinking about asking for the DVD's for Christmas (hoping they don't find it too pricy), but I have a question first. Would I be able to utilize the course at my current, young age, or is it better suited for older, more matured voices? I just want to make sure my voice isn't too underdeveloped for the course before I ask my parents to shell out cash for something I can't even use yet. I hope this question isn't too odd or confusing

My course can help me walk you through this process. There is a transition from prepubescent into adulthood. You may need to take a lesson or two with me directly to quantify this. But there is a very specific process for this transition.

Ken, I simply can't understand how the poseurs continue to sham when people and their word of mouth could bury their vocal coaching businesses. When someone's vocal tool ends up getting abused, you'd think they'd be loud about fakes and frauds...
@kentamplin8 жыл бұрын
Many other coaches like to try to cover their shame by saying that when I talk about this that it's "UnProfessional" of me to point out their phony scams. Since when has telling the truth been "unprofessional" and being a fraud been "Professional"? That's a "Profession" I don't want to be a part of. KTVA is full of refugees from other courses that charged a lot and gave no satisfaction.

In 2012 I needed to rehabilitate my voice after a ten year hiatus due to illness. I took a full three weeks of hanging out on You Tube listening to people give ridiculous advice. Things that didn't make any sense at all and things that felt embarrassing to do (even in my own home all alone). I know vocal exercises aren't supposed be beautiful, after all they're exercises. But some of the stuff was way over the top. Wail like a siren. Seriously?? Bend over and plug your nose while you sing. (There goes your breath support). Meow like a cat? I remember finding your You Tube Channel at 2 am in the morning. I listened and listened and liked what I heard and you had sensible advice I could use and understand. My husband was in China on business at that time and at 3 am we were both listening to you trying to synchronize. Like as in 1-2-3 click! I said I wanted your program and he said buy it! I have never, let me repeat that, NEVER been sorry. I practiced and hour and a half a day 6 days a week for a year and a half. I made it through the master's class and my voice grew like a mad woman on wings! I'm thinking about going through the course again just to brush up as I've been pouring myself into piano for the last year, but it won't take long to brush up, I can attest to that. Thank you for giving so freely of you knowledge at an affordable price. You rock!

Hi Ken, thanks for answering my question in another video. Do you have any videos on how to find a good voice teacher? What type qualities should I look for?
@kentamplin7 жыл бұрын
Look for a teacher that can sing as well as you want to be able to sing. If they can't demonstrate it with their own voice, they won't be able to show you how it's done.

Makes me so cross when people say that singing should be tension free!
@kentamplin8 жыл бұрын
Some tension is necessary and healthy. If there were no muscle tension, we could not stand up or walk or talk. We would fall to the ground like a bag of jelly. It's the MANAGEMENT of tension that counts. A coach who does not know how to manage proper tension will, of course, ridicule it and call it bad, because they have no knowledge of how to properly manage tension when applied to the voice. You DO want to avoid excess tension. But proper tension is required for real-world singing.

Only because I decided to apply the lessons. I'm a ground zero student with no "natural talent" for singing. Just applying the lessons one day at a time.

Good rant ! I think it works itself out naturally to where you end up gettin and keeping those who DO wanna put forth the effort and will be with ya for the long haul.Those lookin for the "secrets" will search endlessly and would not spend much time here anyway....I see "becoming a better vocal" questions asked quite often on the ask google site to which I give your link and a testimonial.

Thank you for allowing me to say what is on my heart, John! There is a big "cover-up" in the vocal coach community, that many out there may be unaware of. When I talk about these nonsense vocal methods that are basically selling "snake oil" and not legitimate ways to grow the voice, I am shunned and called "unprofessional" by those who are selling the lies. Since when did dishonesty and selling bogus methods become the definition of "professionalism" within the vocal community? What is "professional" about a vocal coach who can't sing well themselves? They say Shhhhhhhhh! Don't tell anybody the REAL SECRET! Nay, Nay, Nay!
@peaches74876 жыл бұрын
i forgot the name of the course, but i did find something that offered “3 Easy Tips” to sing better, as a teaser. I watched the video, but the guy talking kept saying “i will tell you the tips, but first” and he goes on and makes dozens of unfounded claims, and i ended up watching a 30 minute video on how much the price of the course was cut down “just for me” and that this is a “very limited offer” (i checked and it’s been up since March last year) and that the singing process between vocal coach and student is tremendously “personal and emotional” i felt like i was watching a persuasive essay! And by the end of it all, he didn’t even give any tips! He kept talking about them the whole time on how much they helped amateur singers progress in a week, but he didn’t give out ANY OF THEM. Did he hope i’d forget?? ALSO, i found the course through a comment, a young lady saying how much it helped her. She even has a video for “proof”, but i suspect a paid actress. I found the same exact comment under other videos, copy&pasted. Mr. Tamplin is right, guys. Do your research on your vocal coaches. Check their backgrounds. For me, Ken is one of, if not THE, best vocal coaches online.

Thank you, Bob! As you may know, some of the well-known coaches publicly say I'm all wrong out of one side of their face, and then turn around the next moment and start teaching things they are taking straight out of my course, as if it was theirs all along. Which is it? If I was so wrong, then how did it suddenly show up as part of their course? And they still get it wrong, even when they steal it!
@VIDEOHEREBOB8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I know what you mean by "plays on all sides." I have those teachers I like and respect, and those I don't. I don't "work" for anyone. I have befriended them and respect them. Are there self-professed vocal teachers who really shouldn't be giving out advice? Yes, I believe there are. As in any profession, there are good ones and bad ones.

Your tutorials are amazing. You sure know what you're talking about. My friend asked me to become the vocalist in his band, sort of as a joke (I sound like a dying weasel and it's hilarious.), but because of this I've been trying to learn to sing well and eventually I hope to add distortion. But anyway, your tutorials are great. Thank you for sharing your talents.

Many of my students took the course just so they could be a better background vocalist in their band, and to be selected over other auditioning instrumentalists when looking for a job. Quite a few of them ended up as lead singers when, for unforeseen reasons, their old lead singer was unable to continue in the job. They have become seasoned PRO lead singers. Good things can happen when you learn from a good method!

@kentamplin7 жыл бұрын
Most see some immediate results, because they have been doing so many things incorrectly, that once they begin to practice proper techniques, there are significant changes. Other changes are more long-term, because they involve actual growth and embedding concepts into muscle-memory. Those things take months and even years. You should realistically expect many of the most rewarding changes to come after the first six months, the first year, and second year. Your voice will continue to grow for as long as you continue to do my program. It's the beginning of your new singing life.

Hi Ken. I have a question. While for sports everyone has to train a lot, there are some people that naturally sing very very good. Not perfect, but good (I don't want to become a professional, but I want to become a good lead-singer for my band). So when I listen to the "quick pills", I try to find what are the points that block me/slow me down. Of course I am listen with caution and I don't just do what they promise, but I am piling up the different suggestions. I think that a set of different perspectives might be good to connect with different type of students. I am not a lazy person in anything and I am asking you out of pure curiosity and in full interest to learn. I know that you have to grown your channel, but I need to trust you, and the 'proof' in the singing, is not enough (for me). Thank you for your (eventual) consideration and thank you for the nice video that you put online :)

Hi Ken, I have taken lessons years ago and I studied Bel Canto. I just finished another year of lessons in the Bel Canto style as well. Should I start from the beginning with your lessons or should I try picking up at an intermediate level? Just not sure where to start. Thanks in advance. Sue
@kentamplin8 жыл бұрын
I ask all of my students to start at the beginning. Things that you already know will come easy for you. There may be some differences in your previous training from what I will teach you. I have studied with numerous Bel Canto instructors, including some when I was in Italy. There were differences in what each of them taught me. I ask that you follow my instructions.

Ken, does the KTVA have a section on creating resonance? I'm not sure where my vocal range/type lies, but I'd like to add some resonance for sure. I like how I sound when I have a cold or am dealing with some congestion...
@kentamplin8 жыл бұрын
Patrick, the KTVA course has a lot about how to create great tone, how to form resonant pockets in your vocal tract with vowel modifications and exercises that help you to bring the tone to the front of the face. You can direct the sound through the velonasal port or out the mouth, to vary the tone, as well.

Scales certainly seem counter productive, all they do for me is add more tension and frustration. What is the point of a exercise that is suppose to improve your voice if it’s possible to do it wrong.
@surtaalrecords46598 жыл бұрын
and more thing i want to ask to ken, sir do you close you cord first then you press air pressure or with air and it adduct or old school technique of inhalation feeling . i mean when you say that aaahh in full range on attack what you really feels. And dont worry about those videos we know who is who.
@kentamplin8 жыл бұрын
The inhalation feeling is true as it applies to keeping the throat open, but not to the onset of sound. You get no safe, usable air pressure until you adduct. Your support is already engaged abdominally, before you onset a sound, to maintain control over any air pressure. Your AHH should ping on attack.

Hey, Ken Tamplin. Thanks for the reassurance video. I know that one particular jerk is giving people vocal nodes. By the way, how does people get vocal nodes, with ping, without ping? It might be something we will never know
@kentamplin8 жыл бұрын
Vocal nodes come from lack of proper abdominal/diapragmatic breath support, improper cord closure, and oversinging. Managing air properly is an essential element in proper vocal health. Ping comes from good support and healthy cord closure. Open Throat Method prevents overpressurization and promotes natural resonance.

Hi Ken, love your stuff as a teacher and singer. And I do think it's very very lame that many vocal coaches on youtube have almost no footage of themselves singing. I mean, learning from observation and imitation is so important, a teacher is not willing to teach if he/she is not willing to demonstrate. But to be fair, naming your course "How to sing better than anyone else" isn't exactly down to earth either.

Buu, you just need to take it one step at a time. Learning to sing is not instantaneous. It is a process of learning, practicing, and gaining skills. Anyone can improve, and most can improve more than they ever thought possible! You just need real information that actually works, and you have to put in the time and the practice. Practicing methods that don't really work is a waste of time.
