It's great to hear this coming from someone with your experience and credibility, Ken. It always bugs me when people say "Oh, I can't sing" then hear them hit out with this really interesting, emotive voice which, while maybe not technically great, conveys more than some professional singers out there. So many interesting, engaging singers underestimate themselves just because they don't have multiple octaves or a super powerful voice, but those are often the ones who have the ability to break your heart with their emotional performances. Guys like Tom Waits blow me away and can reduce me to tears with songs like "Kentucky Avenue", but is he 'technically' a good singer? No, he sounds like he's gargled bleach but therein lies his charm! Thanks for posting this, great content as always.

This was helpful, because in my spare time when I'm alone, I like to sing random words and put them into a song, that can possibly turn into something catchy that I'm comfortable with. I do have a fear of singing with someone, but I'm still trying to get over that fear. The whole reason is basically, you shouldn't do this, is, being afraid what people think. Now. I don't care what people think, but for me, that's a whole different topic when singing. I've been trying to grow my voice since I was little.

"A singer is only a singer because they have the guts to be one." That rings SO true for me. When I trust myself to GO FOR IT, I am a really good singer...but -- entirely too often -- I end up sounding HORRIBLE because I didn't trust myself, and I held back, which made me land in an off-key area (even when I'm ALONE and no one else could POSSIBLY hear me). *sighs* So...I have to take this advice that rings so true. I have to find the GUTS to be a good singer. Thank you

You know....ive watched a lot of your videos today. I auditioned for a few bands over the last few years and keot hearing the same thing..."you cant sing". For aomebody who has sang on and off his entire life, hearing this devastated me. Its been about a year of mental recovery to even want to get back into it....2 months ago i landed a guitarist who really dug my style. We started writing songs and then 3 days ago landed a drummer and a bass player. I started doing at home demos of the songs they were sending me and it was going so well ubtil i listened to the songs and remembered how much i sort of despise my own voice because its not Chris Cornell (LOL i know i know but we can dream) so i started getting that negative feeling again. The next 2 kr 3 recordings i ran were horrible. I was all over the place. I had mentally lost my comfort zone again...startrd remembering and thinking about the rejection so i came to youtube to find some help. I've watched 9 of your videos just today, this being the last one and i decided to comment....even knowing you may never read it. I just want to say thank you. Not for your lessons per say, but because you reminded me of the most important thing. What made me great in my youth was my confidence and my no care attitude. Whats hindering me as an adult is my lack of confidence because of the strife i dealt with. It reminded me that those guys who told me i couldnt sing we're not correct in their assessment....i just wasnt the type of singer they wanted. Burly, deep undertones, aggressive etc...but I'm the exact singer my new band is looking for and the sound we all are looking for in the final product. If I've gotten one thing from your videos its my confidence back. My "i dont give a fuck what you think ima do my thing regardless" attitude. Thanks 100000000x for that brother.
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 7 жыл бұрын
Joseph, thanks for your comment. You've hit many nails on the head with this one. It's easy to shrink away from trying when people reject you at auditions. It just often turns out that they are looking for a specific sound or style that is not what you excel at. Now look. You've found a GOOD FIT. Now it's time to get your voice back in shape and rebuild your confidence. You can't be Chris Cornell because you just aren't him. You're Joseph. So be all that you can, as yourself. Hone your skills and find YOUR voice! Arise and sing!

That is good advice. " You Have to Sing to be a Singer." I've never Sang in front of anyone before. I have sung at work for decades. But I've always worked alone. I Never Shared my Singing with anyone. All the Guys were Roped in Front of the Church for an unrehearsed Christmas song. Most of the guys pretend they aren't there and mumble through the song. " Oh Holly Night." I let it RIP! That was so Much Fun!!! I didn't have much of a voice that day. But it turned out mostly Good. I did plenty of Vibrato. I was in tune. And Hit some Beautiful Notes. The Down side is all of the Church Ladies Expect Me To Sing Now. Best Wishes! M.H.

Thank you for this video Ken and "A singer is only a singer because they have the guts to be one". I was in sixth grade, 10 years old, new to the United States. A music teacher had each child in the class come up to her piano to "audition". From the "audition", she picked people to be in the chorus. My new friends were chosen, but I wasn't. When I asked why I wasn't in the chorus (I didn't know you had to be chosen), she told me that I could not sing. So, I avoided letting anyone hear me sing for the remainder of my life until now, in my sixth decade of life.

Another great video Ken. A lot of people just do not realize that a big key of singing is to adopt the correct attitude to convey the message of a song. You do not want to Belt out a light hearted love song or express teenage angst with a soft falsetto. Some people lose the meaning of a song by adding too much melisma in the wrong places and ruin the grammatical phrasing that keeps the story consistent. Dylan may not have had the best voice but you always knew what he was singing about and what his meaning was behind the words. That is the mark of a good singer.

Hey, Ken, I think it could be helpful to differentiate between "singer" and "musician". Best examples were as you mentioned Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. They were Geniuses in composing music without being good singer in the technical sense. And there are on the opposite enough examples for singer that were so good they don't even have to write their own music. Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Barbara Streysand, Beyonce, Elvis, Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett were foremost ENTERTAINER and SINGER than composer or musicians in the creative sense. I compare this to racecar-drivers. They don't have to know how to build or repair cars - although many of them know like many of my examples were co-composer too - but PERFORMING is their special power!

People need to realize the learning to really sing well is more than quick 5-minute scam videos and come-ons. It's more about building a strong foundation from the ground up, and working to make it better, day-by-day. Listen to the vocal coach sing. How hard are the songs he or she is demonstrating? Or are they even demonstrating? If they can't sing themselves, then they can't teach you to sing. Find a vocal coach that can sing their butt off, and learn how to sing like that.

Ahh, that smile...and that soothing voice. Makes me smile and feel better immediately! 😍❤️ And yeah, I know that my singing is not the greatest. But at age 28 I was tired of sitting on the bleachers listening to others doing what I felt I was ready to do. Yes, it was a little scary at first, being up front & center alone. But I made myself get used to it, and it became fun! And over the next, uuhhh, 35+ years I went from mediocre to “good,” but even at this age I know I can do more. I didn’t have KEN back in the old days!

I enjoyed this video. You're extremely knowledgeable, in addition to being encouraging. I had a less than positive experience in high school choir, and it took a few years for me to get my mojo back, so to speak. Luckily I had friends at university who eventually talked me into the occasional backing vocal, or just to cover one tune for em. Not a lot of people willing to tackle Jane's Addiction or Violent Femmes. Both singers have a unique sound.

Such a nice video and totally agree with you in this, Ken. It's kind of cool that just few days back I wondered about this matter while driving home. What I, as an amateur singer, would teach to someone who just decides to start this wonderful hobby. And pretty much exactly the same things came to my mind too. The most important thing is to dare to use your vocal range (and techniques) in it's full potential and seconly, like an actor, dive into the story of the song, use your influences and try to make yourself a tool for the story. Empathize. There's really nothing to fear. Throw yourself in and you'll end up hearing those "we want more"'s. :) When I started about 20 years ago, I was actually not really that willing but since no one else in our band didn't have the guts either, I started to sing, or something like that. By my own it took almost 15 years to actually reach that point when I realized that hell, I actually can sing a song like Scorpion's Still Loving You or Queen's Show Must Go On, if I just go and sing it. :) But getting away from that low baritone area needs exactly that, guts. Guts to try out, fail miserably, try thousand times again and find your limits. But in the end, it's not really that hard when you figure it out. But work, that it needs.

Mr. Ken Tamplin just checking your older videos. I know what you meant. And it is: You have to put yourself in song and not imitate biggest stars. It's only the way how you self can to treat the songs you sing. And then if you have someone which present your performances you will right so bigg like those which sing "original" or said with the other words: you present self small or bigg, so big like you want to be.... Thank you once again! Nicest regards from Germany! Roses

Well I just found you and am so glad. I have several issues. I sang a lot when I was younger, then life took over, kids, years of partying all took their toll. So I've been singing for about 8 months now on Smule. I have a real issue with the cracking thing and God I hate it. It is getting better just by singing a lot but it still happens. The other issue or question I guess is I don't fall into the typical soprano female voice. I have a lower register and am so much more comfortable singing lower but most songs have a few higher notes in them and I'd like to hit them without cracking. Suggestions? New subbie here.

Hi Ken, I've been watching your videos religiously and am SO GLAD I came across your information just like thousands of other brand new singers (Yes, we are singers too people!). I have a question that other people may or may not have asked you before but what are some other ways that you could explain the "Ping" you talk about. For some reason I'm having a hear time visualizing/hearing what you mean so I was wondering what some alternative words could be that could communicate the same idea since it seems like that Ping is crucial for success within your teachings! Thank you and lots of positive vibes your way!
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, Dorian. The ping in the voice is getting a lot of bright, high-frequency harmonic overtones into your singing. If you google Singers Formant, you will see that classical singers all over the world have been seeking to have overtones in their voice in the region of about 2.5khz to 4 khz, which area of the sound spectrum has been named the "singers formant". Singers all over the world strive to get this brilliance into their sound. I often state that this bright ping is the ONLY TRUE WAY to grow the voice. That sounds a little bit arrogant until you realize that this is the very part of the sound of the human voice that actually promotes resonance. Having a lot of naturally resonant frequency content within your voice just naturally promotes resonance within the vocal tract. It starts at the vocal cords themselves, by getting a nice, crisp amount of cord CLOSURE, which I demonstrate directly when I tell people "It's the LAH!!! AHHH!!! and I do so in that very bright timbre of voice, with good cord closure and bright sound production. When it's bright enough, the sound literally pings from the hard surfaces within the vocal tract, and ricochets and resonates within the reflective pockets of resonance. When the voice is trained to have this bright pinging sound, it resonates to the max. This is like having power steering for the voice. Classical singing has a tendency to be dark in tonal color. We want to start out from the very beginning with a bright, OPEN sound. Open Throat, Open Jaw, Tongue down, and BRIGHT. This is our Home Position on the AH Vowel. All vowels stem from the AH.

Awesome singing tips& vocal tutorials, thank you thank you, at 66 I've seen improvements despite the 2 and 1/2 year hiatus due to the pandemic and other personal reasons, nevertheless I kept watching vocal KZbin videos on singing and, I narrowed it down to which ones were most helpful, Educational and effective in vocal tone,& improved range ,naturally being a baritone and not really a rock singer ,although I love classic rock of the 60s& 70s,as well as classic jazz standards but was more exposed to classic soul, R& B and Latin rock music as a youth ,I appreciate how you explain everything and give us the examples, and yes the proof is in singing! Thanks again Ken ,you are the Sesai for aspiring singers to be the very best they can,I am currently just doing a few private parties ,weddings, anniversaries etc but singing 3 , 50 minuet - to a Hour set still takes alot out me as a front man & playing Latin percussion on Timbales, keep up the good work Bro 👏 🎶🎵🎙😎👊

I'm 50 years old and have always been afraid to sing where others can hear me. I'm hoping your videos helps me get to where I can feel comfortable with my voice. Although I think I'll try the techniques in the barn first. If the horses don't kick through the walls and take off maybe I will gain some confidence. I am 1 of 5 kids and e1 can sing but me. The worst part is my passion for music far outweighs theirs. They all listen to just 1 genre of music. Although they all have different tastes it still baffles me why they don't atleast give others a try with an open mind. Anyways thanks for the vids.
