I thought my wordplay was clever, and then MS took some hay in his mouth, looked me straight in the eye, and you know what he said? Nothing. He just chewed his hay. Obviously, yes. He was the best horse. In and of itself, he was the fastest and legitimately won the race. His finish after the incident was impressive. But he bolted way out of his lane and made other horses check up. You simply can't do that. The decision was correct.

It depends on the strength of the bump, if they pinch them off, if it causes a reaction to the horse that got bumped (like change of finishing position), and if there is an objection, you don't usually see an objection outside of the first 4 spots though because those are the money spots.

Maximum Security was only in the lead the entire race because he cut off War Of Will twice or War Of Will goes right on by and probably wins. Each time War Of Will went to pass Maximum Security, Saez drifted out and bumped him.

And then after taking War Of Will out of the race, Saez shoots back to the rail and takes out Code of Honor who was about to take the lead on the rail. An incredibly dirty ride and a very stupid ride because Saez might have had the best horse if he just rides him straight and clean. Maybe War Of Will goes by him and wins or maybe Max Sec wins the stretch battle. No one will ever know

@@bgore88 It was not questionable, and it is the opposite of a black eye. Maximum Security clearly drifted out of lane approaching the final turn, impeding the progress of the horse next to him. The rules say you cannot do that. It doesn't matter a bit that the eventual winner was not directly affected at that moment. You can not cut off the progress of another horse. The rules say that if you do that, you get disqualified. Ignoring an obvious infraction simply because it's a big race would have been a much bigger stain. They did the right thing. Congratulations to Country House.

So many commenters here got this wrong. MS was all over the place, even before the move that got him DQ'ed. He was jumping lanes all around the far turn, and was just fortunate that only the big wobble impeded only one competitor. And, for CH, it is so hard to recover momentum after having to slow down, especially after over a minute of running already. It sucks, but it was an obvious call that is made in horse racing every day. Not an easy call, but an obvious one. Heck, it's not only in horse racing. Distance running, cycling (Peter Sagan got thrown out of the TDF for essentially the same thing), sailing, even motor racing: if you change lanes and you're not 100% clear of those behind, you're at fault.

Maximum security is very fast and could have won, but it’s the jockeys fault. He got selfish. I know all about the derby rules and your supposed to stay in your area if you watched to full thing you see he went he out the back in a lot. Which could have caused the horse behind him to fall making more horses and jockeys to get hurt. When watching the full derby you could see the jockey knew he screwed up and so did the owner of the horse.

I have no idea who the NFL refs are or why they were involved -- but no, they are not "officiating" the KY Derby. The ones who rule are the stewards -- and it took them 14 or 15 very long minutes to DQ Maximum Security. At the track, the stewards are like kings, and at a top-class track like CHD they rule absolutely. Only their decision counts. When they announced a stewards' inquiry, I thought WTF? -- and then I watched the race replays in slow motion, and yikes. As a racehorse owner myself, I couldn't believe what was on the replay. This race came so close to being a hideous pile-up that I hope to NEVER see such a thing again.

Ngl, a lot of people in the comments seem really biased. They love Maximum Security, so it's an emotional thing for them. I grew up riding and I keep tabs on racing on and off, but I'm not particularly attached to any current runners, so I feel confident that my opinion is pretty objective. I'm not an expert and I don't claim to be, so it IS possible I'm wrong, but imho he deserved to be DQed. He definitely impeded other horses/jockeys at least twice. It's on camera. It cannot be denied that it happened, even though many are trying to excuse it. Maybe it was intentional. Maybe it wasn't. But either way, the jockey should have known better. I get that people love this horse and wanted to see him keep a perfect record like some kind of fairy tale, but he was fairly disqualified, and it was pretty much entirely the hockey's fault (weather played a part, sure, but everything comes down to how the jockey handles the situations as they come). It's too bad horses/jockeys don't get disqualified more often for the things they do during races. I hope this causes jockeys to play dirty less, and to be more aware. I'd actually like to see DQs be considered more often, and I hope this race opens the doors for more careful consideration over what actually happens during these races. Too much gets swept under the rug in order to glorify a storybook type win. Congrats to the actual winner, Country House.

Incidental contact at the speed their going could cause death. It's part of the reason its frowned upon. 2 jockeys had to break stride as a consequence of Saez poor riding. Even if the horse was the best, his jockey was not. It's a team effort

Jeff Mejia I’ll have you know that the jockey on Long Range Toddy also claimed foul against Maximum Security, not just Country House, and Maximum Security did indeed impede Long Range Toddy (the 18 horse). Horses are always placed behind the last horse they impeded if they’re DQ’d for multiple interferences and if you look at the official race results, you’ll see that Maximum Security was placed behind Long Range Toddy, the last horse he interfered with

Side-by-side bumping is allowed, the problem occurs when a horse jumps sideways 3 lanes to impede a horse then jumps 3 lanes back the other way to bump the inside horse. That's too dangerous and cannot be allowed.

These horses are trained rigorously to track straight and while there is a little leeway given on a sloppy track 3lanes out and back clipping in front of one close enough that the one horses nose is nearly on the jockeys back and then slamming into the side of the runner on the inside!? If any of my family had been sitting on the front 5 horses I dont think I would have been able to breathe the whole race. Granted I also believe that if the track had been dry MS's tracking would have been straight as an arrow like usual and he'd have taken the lead by a full furlong!

I don’t follow horse racing that much, but in auto racing that’s a definite blocking penalty. You have to stay with your line throughout the entire corner, and give your opponent space on the track. Maximum Security violated both, and most certainly gained an advantage by doing so.

When Code of Honor won his race he impeded Vekoma much more severely and - no call - I wish these officials would get a little more consistent. Regardless of the stewards taking him down MS showed lots of grit and the 1 horse would not have headed him in my opinion.
