no, in this case what did the sheriff do or not do that was causing him to lose his job... that's where the answer lies, you do know the sheriff(shooter) was deposed earlier in the week and was likely going to lose his job over the allegations and coverup while he was sheriff.

This sheriff had probably just ruined his own life with criminal misconduct. His pal the judge probably wasn't going to cover for him. So it was a "you're going down with me" situation. Pretty simple.
