If you look at the loads for a modern 45-70 (non-trapdoor), you'll find 405gr +P ammo from Buffalo Bore, Grizzly, and other manufacturers that is about 100 fps faster with similar weight bullets. When you consider the ballistic coefficient of the 45-70 over the 500 S&W, you'll see the 45-70 gives better performance with both distance and penetration. Here's a quick comparison from 22 inch barrel rifles: 300 grain Buffalo Bore 45-70 = 2350 fps 300 grain Hornady 500 S&W = 2248 fps 350 grain Buffalo Bore 45-70 = 2100 fps 350 grain Hornady 500 S&W= 2056 fps 400 grain Buffalo Bore 45-70 = 2000 fps 400 grain Cor-Bon 500 S&W = 1971 fps

@garyK.45ACP Жыл бұрын
@@thomo66 With any of the Browning designed lever guns with tube magazines (1886, 1892, 1894 and their derivatives) you have to operate the lever briskly to get the lifter to raise the case up to the chamber and close the lever briskly, especially with straight cases. FYI, this doesn't apply as much to the Model 1895 which uses a box magazine and a spring powered lifter. But in any lever gun, you are doing a lot of actions with the lever throw, extracting, ejecting, cocking the hammer, lifting another cartridge from the magazine in line with the chamber and then chamber and locking the action. There is no need to operate them gently, they won't break. This may also apply to Marlins. I collect Winchesters and have no experience with Marlins, but I suspect the same is true.
@bobjohnson1633 Жыл бұрын
Well, it doesn't just slide open. You need to throw the action to build the momentum, and then it slides. It doesn't take a lot. Just don't baby it.
@garyK.45ACP Жыл бұрын
@@thomo66 Thank you. We shouldn't take our gun rights lightly. Here in the USA some politician or another constantly attacks our rights, but so far, we are not doing bad and in recent years our rights have been getting restored more than lost. Only a few states seem determined to continue wasting their time and money, while most states have been restoring our rights. The federal government has been pretty well shut down in their anti-gun efforts. I was fortunate to have a father and grandfather that were gun collectors and I inherited their collections in addition to building my own. My grandfather was a collector of any guns designed by John Browning. So I inherited a large number of Winchester lever rifles Models 1886, 1892, 1894, 1895, 65, 54, 64, and 71. Plus a few handguns, Remington Model 8 and 81 semi-auto rifles and Browning A-5 shotguns. My father was more "eclectic" in his gun tastes. He liked Colt handguns, though and I have several of those from him. I'm a retired police officer, so I have been carrying a handgun every day for more than 50 years and accumulated a large collection of handguns. Most of them have been retired from daily carry for one reason or another and now I have three which make up my daily carry guns depending on the weather, my clothing and activity for the day. I still have all the others, and shoot them occasionally, but rarely carry them. I don't like to sell or trade guns. (you never get what they're worth and always regret it) I just get new ones and the others will get handed down to my sons.

How does the.500 mag compare to the.45-70; A. Ballistically B. Cost per round C. Felt recoil. Thanks for the video Scott, it was entertaining 😊
@joshuascott7935 Жыл бұрын
I dont think the 500 would have the range of the 45-70. Under 100 yards I'm willing to bet it has more knockdown but start to drop drastically after that. I'm willing to bet felt recoil would be similar.
@CtrlAltRetreat Жыл бұрын
Underwood 45-70 Government 325gr. Xtreme Hunter 2030fps The 350gr 500mag in this video were going 2025fps so same speed, 8% more mass, 11% more diameter. I'd expect about the same at most weights but 45-70 tops out at 500gr while 500mag has factory 700gr. I think where the 500mag would really shine is out of a suppressed lever gun. You'd need to hand load but a subsonic 700gr slug has some interesting potential.
@CtrlAltRetreat Жыл бұрын
Oh, for b and c. Underwood prices for 500 are slightly more than their equivalent 45-70, about 5%, and felt recoil will be stouter by about the same amount as the momentum increases, all else being equal. Basic physics, as you go up bullet weights you'll generally get more felt recoil per J of KE

*Hey Scott? Out of curiosity, how similar do you feel the power level between the 500 and a 45-70 is? Just curious, because I already own an extremely nice 45-70, but a 500 lever gun has had my attention ever since I saw one. If it's essentially the "same gun", I may just save the cash for something else.*
@bobjohnson1633 Жыл бұрын
Unless you are taking shots past 300 yards, it's the same gun. If you take shots past 300 yards, the 500 has less energy for the heavier bullets.
@fuelforthepyre_9044 Жыл бұрын
*That helps a bunch. I knew it was a larger diameter projectile, but aside from that, I always felt the performance was probably pretty damn close.*
@CtrlAltRetreat Жыл бұрын
@@fuelforthepyre_9044 Underwood 325gr extreme hunters are listed at 2030fps muzzle. That's about the same speed as these 350gr .500s with but 8% lighter and 11% smaller diameter. 500 mag hollow points are also designed to expand at lower speeds so you'll have better expansion as you stretch out, on top of the already larger diameter but worse bc at equal weights. However,a major thing you might want to consider is the much larger range in bullet weights as 45-70 tops out at about 500gr but 500 mag has 700gr loadings. If you want to throw a heavy pill out of a suppressed lever gun, the 500 mag will be a big step up in thump and the longer bullets will improve bc. Both are more than enough for anything walking around NA but if you're having fun blasting things with big bore, I'll bet a 700gr out of a hushed lever gun would ring a gong mighty fine.
@bosspantherv262 Жыл бұрын
I always wondered how some of the overpowered pistol cartridges would handle in a rifle format. I would never buy a .500mag. as a revolver just because of the recoil but in a rifle format recoil looks very manageable. Would be overkill for home defense but excellent for bear protection. Not to mention a hell of a lot of fun down at the range.

Hey Mr. Scott, have you ever checked out the Winchester 1886 in any of these 45-70, 45-90, 45-100, 50-100, 50-110? Seeing how the 1886 Winchester was the most powerful lever gun made if not still. Also side note the 45-90 version can also load and shoot the 45-70.
