I have a story for you, Scott. Several years ago I worked in a gunstore, I met a lot of interesting people and heard a lot of stories. One day, one of our regulars comes in, all bandaged up, it looked pretty crazy. His story, however, was even more crazy. He explained he and one of his buddies had been out shooting on a field, he was using his old Winchester model 70, chambered in .270win. His buddy brought a rifle chambered in .308, by now you're probably catching on as to what happened that evening. Somehow their ammo had gotten mixed up, and he grabs a round, puts it in his rifle and chambers it. The .308 goes right into the chamber of his Winchester Model 70 which was chambered for .270. He pulls the trigger and the rifle goes boom. Barrel went flying down range, the scope slammed right into his forehead, the left side of the receiver went into his forearm and the rest of the rifle went everywhere else. The man calmly explained how he really liked that rifle, and if at all possible, would love to buy another model 70 if we had one. He was truly an interesting man, it's honestly people like him that made the hassle of retail work worth it.

I know grant given it's a hot round versus a squib load, but still knowing what would happen when using a rifle that has a catastrophic failure is important for me. As a Marine, I learned firearm safety not in just handling but remedial actions, which includes knowing when there's a squib load. That being said, it's kinda unavoidable if you happen to have that one hot round. Thank you for posting this one!
@KiithnarasAshaa2 жыл бұрын
This series has highlighted that it is not just the chamber pressure alone that determines the _severity_ of an overpressure event - it's also the total energy of that overpressure event; The comparatively dinky 5.56 still did substantial damage to the weapon and surroundings even though the test subject fared quite reasonably. Similar was true of the pistol detonations. By comparison, .50 BMG is packing _significant_ energy, as Scott knows first-hand.

Rather than just using the safety, perhaps it would be even safer to insert the hot load as the 2nd round in the mag, so even if it "just goes off" when you take the safety off, only a normal round would fire. Only problem is you'd have to set up your string to work multiple times in a row. Just a thought

@whatsmolly57412 жыл бұрын
There is no casual increments involved here. Even in a .223 barrel alot of loads top out at 100% case capacity so if we assume 100% case capacity is max 55k pressure in order to create a 550k psi round you would have to literally compress the powder into a solid and fit 5-10 times more powder than 100% case capacity. Actually I take that back, I don't even think it's possible with the fastest rifle powders meant for .223 and ya he even said it's a squib so I'd bet that round wasn't even capable of blowing up the gun without the obstruction.

Some of the guns that were overbuilt to high extent might even survive any possible overpressure rounds you can make using any smokeless powder-based stuff but I would love to see it anyway! I used to have an old Forehand&Wadsworth D/A #32 revolver in .32 rimfire and believe it or not but I ended up increasing the load all the way to maximum pressure possible in it's caliber by filling it's whole case capacity with the PETN-laced super-fine and really fast burning smokeless powder and the gun survived even that!So the barrel was just 2.5" and the bullet weight was 100 grains;the bore diameter .316" and case length .800" so basically the round was dimensionally identical to .32 S&W long and the muzzle velocity reached a whopping 2130 fps!So the damn .32 snub nose revolver ended up producing over 1000 fpe which is by the way exactly the same energy as the full sized (18" barrel) AK-74 rifle with ball ammo in 5,45×39mm! Blind Ryder 609 Ooooo. AK dust cover and bolt up in the face. Seen that on video before when an AK blew up. Most ARs that I have seen blow up on video usually blow out through the ejection port and down through the mag well but not in the shooter's face.
@Squirrel4282 жыл бұрын
The keltec RDB is probably relatively safe if an similar round was chambered and fired out of it. Since it had a downward ejection and the magazine well to direct the blast. Of course the magazine would still be destroyed along with the bolt and piston.
@Alfs_Armory2 жыл бұрын
My theory is that the destruction occurred primarily downward and laterally due to the bolt being locked into the receiver extension and the squib not allowing gas to get to the gas tube to unlock it. This setup needs to be done twice more. Once with a clear bore, to see if the gas system would prevent some of the damage and once with the lugs shaved off the bolt.
@edifyguy2 жыл бұрын
Donate two more ARs and I'm sure he'll be happy to do that for you. :)
@BryceKimball7.32 жыл бұрын
500,000 psi is way too much pressure. The bolt would likely not have unlocked before the whole gun exploded anyways, like seen. The pressure is way too high, and way too fast. The powder being used for these loads is waaaay faster than a normal rifle powder, so the pressure builds up incredibly fast. It would explode before the bullet has even moved down the barrel much.
@Alfs_Armory2 жыл бұрын

I've seen a couple of catastrophic failures with the AR, the inherent design directs the great majority of the blast into the BCG and down the magwell. Pretty much destroys the small parts leaving the lower repairable. In the two incidents I witnessed, no harm to the shooter, no forearm damage, no hand damage, nothing came back into the face. I cant remember where I read this, but I do remember there was a story to this, as in they were recounting someones previous experience. I suppose though that throwing 10x the recommended pressure at anything is going to pretty well bypass any safety measures and just go boom. Great video as always Scott!!!!

Ya know when I was a teenager doing wood working with no safety glasses this old grizzled carpenter came up and sat down next to me. He looked at my work and asked if I was deaf blind and stupid. I said no why? He said I don’t care if you don’t wear hearing protection or gloves but if it was me I’d wear safety glasses. I asked him why and without missing a beat he said I don’t need every finger on my hands or either ear to work but I’ll be damned if I can’t see boobies. I think it would be cool to see an episode of this series focusing on super hot, overpowered small caliber rounds like 22lr, 22 mag, 25 acp, 5.7x28, etc… I wonder if you could make those small rounds high-pressured enough to edit anything
@roseblite64492 жыл бұрын
I can tell ya what not to do when reloading and you get a Hot Round, don't throw it into the melted lead. My dad's friend did this when they were reloading, years before I was born (sometime before 1969), and when he threw that round into the melted lead crucible everyone scattered to a safe distance before it exploded. The crucible had a fair sized hole in it and lead was scattered everywhere. Morals to this story, don't reload while drinking, and if you make a mistake don't throw it into the hot lead crucible. From the guns/rifles we had when I grew up the round was either a .22 LR or a .30 Cal. So a doubled powdered round (at least) round could be quite spectacular, even with only a .22 LR.
@motosk8er22 жыл бұрын
I'm also gonna throw my hat in the ring for a 10/22. When I was a kid and didnt know much about guns I took my cheap-o savage bolt action .22 rifle and two 22lr rounds. I pulled the bullets out of both and dumped all the powder into one case and pressed the bullet back in. Stupid me thought twice the powder = twice the velocity. The gun failed somewhat catastrophically. Cracked the bolt and spewed a few parts out the ejection port. I was fine thankfully.

@@motosk8er2 haha yeah, thankfully you’re okay. 10/22 is a fine rifle. I have 2 of them and never had any issues
@Ginrummy332 жыл бұрын
When I was young, I sometimes would pull the lead off a .22 bullet, because you could easily do this with just your fingers, and then put the powder from one into another to double it and put the bullet back in. I fired a couple of these in an old single-shot bolt-action .22 rifle and they made quite a bang, but they didn't do any noticeable damage. It did vent some gas out the breach face and jar the bolt handle up some, and but not all the way open. I never did this with anything stronger because I realized that would be pretty stupid. :)

For how destructive that was it really didn’t seem that dangerous. You’ll notice the shrapnel went up, to the side, and forward. It didn’t come back towards your face and that was surprising to me. I thought the bolt would have flown out the back. You wouldn’t be unscathed like Scott said about the forearm. But you probably wouldn’t be dead and I count that as a win.

The lower looked good from my viewpoint. The barrel, also looked OK, the barrel extension on the other hand is what split into four pieces. Not uncommon for an AR firing out of battery to puke all the pressure out the magazine well. One of the first things you're taught is not to use the magazine as a hand hold. How about testing a CETME, the G3 clone or possibly a FN-FAL. Someone has to have a Williams Alumabomb they'd be willing to donate to science. (Williams made a aluminum receiver for the FAL rifle), that after a few shots shook head spacing pin out.
@AustinScottHoffman2 жыл бұрын
Since so much of the force seemed to go down into the magazine, I'd be curious to see what would happen with a loaded mag, at least with dummy rounds or blanks. I imagine the first few rounds in the mag would rupture or crack from the pressure, and possibly ignite if there were still some sparks floating around.
@3ountyhunter2 жыл бұрын
I've seen people do tests with full mags and it smashes the cases, but thru don't go off.
