I wish there were more people out there in KZbin land that did repairs like this. I have been repairing electronics for years and I watch these videos all the time. It's sad thou, there are not too many repair shops left in existence. Everything now a days is disposable.....too easy to throw something away and replace vs fix and keep. Keep the videos coming and Thank's for sharing your knowledge with others!!

i just picked up a 1991 Kenwood GE850 Spectrum Analyzer yesterday, i actually have 3, the 2 i already have, both have a nice bright display, but the one i just picked up yesterday has a darker display, i can still see it ok but it just doesn't have the same brilliance as my other 2, i might look in to this to see if the Caps are starting to Wear out, it's worth it just to see if they have lost some capacitance due to age. Great Video..

I tried the same method on a Sony radio and it worked like charm. Thank you very much.

Good catch, Norzy! Always enjoy your repairs. Hit the garage, closets, basement and pull out all that cool old stuff and make a bunch more. We're going stir crazy! :) Thanks!

They are great meters, I had a friend donate an extra 117 to me about a year ago. I love it!

I bought an old akai reciever that was working fine. Now half of the vfd is dark and most of the buttons do nothing. The sound also is going out too. It powers on and random areas of the vfd will light up when turning on/off. Time to crack it open and explore the caps!

Damn. I got rid of a CD player with dim VFD. I don't remember if I tested the filament voltage. Wish this was around back then. Great vid.

What would happen if more voltage was given to the display? Will it break?
@linuxbeastmaster91922 жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks i have the entire system and the display is very dim
@norcal7152 жыл бұрын
Replace the same capacitors as in the video. One or both are probably failing.

@@norcal715 thank you, been looking a very long time for this system, very happy with it, it's really nice to see one being repaired, I appreciate the time you put into that video, though I looked around and I can't find your patreon.

Will the equalizer and amplifier part work for a yamaha receiver

Hi. I got a Philips speaker system with the same issue. I don't have much knowledge of electronic but I can manage with diy stuffs. Can you help me identify the issue please? The system comes on but the display does not. I can power it on and change source. Thank you in anticipation

Hi. Thx for the great video. I have a question. I have a Sony Lbt-V902. There is 2 problems with the tuner and equalizer displays. Tuner: Some characters of the tuner display are dimer then the other ones. Equalizer: Right channel display is dimer then the left one on the spectrum analizer display. Are these fixable without changing the displays which are impossible to find replacements? THX
@norcal7152 жыл бұрын
If the segments have had long hours of use then they will dim over time compared to the ones where no use has occurred.

Now thats a REAL Capacitor Checker rite there. Do they still make and sell those? I remember almost 20 years ago my buddy who was also a Tech used to build those Analog ESR meter's. He called them "GhostBusters"! I love those. Good Video!

I will try and find a schematic and post it in another video in the upcoming weeks or months.

My assumption was that these VFD displays fail over time because the F stands for florescent. I had a perfectly nice Yamaha receiver from the 90s that I piched about 3 years ago, becasue the display gradually grew weaker and weaker to where it finally went out completely. I never even thought about bad caps. I replaced it with another Yamaha, but this one isn't nearly as weil made as the older one. Oh well. The old one only supported S-Video and we've moved way beond that now.

"I went ahead and traced the circuit" Ohms, voltage? What led you to those particular caps? Higher resistance, lower voltage?
@norcal7154 жыл бұрын
Missing voltage and they were in series with the supply so I had to test them.
