Kenwood's are renowned for their tx audio quality. best sounding hf radios you can buy (in my opinion)

well my friend.. R180 and that diode is used to blocked radio on transmitted in AM mode but you can still use to receive ... cut that resistor so you can transmit on AM mode...

From what I can see in the PDF service manual online it looks as if both of those components are in series and the resistor ties into the base on Q23.

Since I've upgraded from Technician to General Ham license, I picked up a working Kenwood TS-430 with matching PS-430 power supply. Only thing that doesn't work is the S meter on receive. Works well on transmit. I don't have the FM module but want one. Any ideas??? 73 from K9POW in eastern Tennessee.

Get the service manual. Calibrate the S meter. Done.

That's looks like an export 430 to me. They would be a bit different than American. I have owned several 430's and never seen those two components in them. Somewhere I have some notes. Checking my service material I am not seeing it listed. If it was me I pull the IF board and see what they are doing if connected.

Didn't even consider a export version. That's a possibility.

Customer saw the video and looked in the manual he got with the radio and he said their shown in his manual. I'll have it tomorrow and will be making a copy of it.

I own a 430. I have to look at mine now... but I don't recall seeing those parts in mine so it might be for a different market.

Late to the game here, but I looked at two TS-430s radios that i am about to repair, with wildly different serial numbers, and they both have those parts clipped out.

Mike, I have a new to me TS-430s and it reduces it's output power way too soon - like it will only do 15W into an SWR of 1.5. Thinking the foldback adjustment is off (I already went through the PA and it's fine). Have you done any foldback adjustments on these radios and can point me to the pots? I've read I need to hookup a 150 ohm dummy load to adjust (3:1)

HI mike, have a look at the base of Q23

Nice radios!! just a quick question to pick your brain a bit, My 430 has developed an issue being that i cannot control mic gain. no matter where i set it , even off completely, it still drives the radio. any ideas where to look? thanks!
@mikesradiorepair7 жыл бұрын
Daniel McGrath I would start by taking some level measurements on the IF unit and mic gain control. You want to find where control is being lost. Also see if VOX or speach processor have any effect on it. Is the lack of control in all modes?
@mcgrath165117 жыл бұрын
will do just need to get some time to do this..crazy work thing keeps getting in the way!! ;) thanks ill keep you posted..

Ok quick follow up...had some time finally to check my radio out,, after checking the mic gain control and all connections, i lifted the IF board and did a close inspection, found what looked like a "cold solder" joint on "C-5" and guess where that comes from!! you guessed it the mic gain control. Removed all the old solder, cleaned it up and re-soldered and TAH-DAH!!! all better,,Thanks for the advice definitely pointed me in the right direction and reaffirmed my suspicions...all the best numbers your way,

Daniel McGrath Good to hear you got it fixed and was something simple.

is the pa stage in good shape on that one Mike coz they do suffer from bad solder joints as they get older.

Was in good condition and had good output on all bands. I don't think it had a huge amount of transmit time on it. There was very little dust and dirt in the final unit.

how much do you charge an hour as i have the same model radio with a few problems .

Mystery parts gota love em....LOL I do not know which I prefer looking at something and finding mystery parts that are in and have solder pads and are silk-screened or lots of holes that are nicely silk screened but look to have never contained a part ever. It always makes me wonder what I might be missing out on performance wise or what key feature I do not have? Even more than that I hate the sight of OEM jumper wires running across a board or from one side to another or multiple jumper wires from the OEM. Always make you wonder how much pre-production testing they did or how close they scrutinize a design before producing a 100,000 boards. LOL Lets hope it is just an Export versus FCC accepted design. Kind of like all the Uniden and Cybernet clones that used almost exact main PCB but with 40 or more parts missing or added depending on the final destination. I wonder what the mystery parts in this version of this model are there for?
@mikesradiorepair8 жыл бұрын
Empty holes in radios that are silkscreened are usually other features or modes. Its cost less to make one board that can be used in 20 radios than making 20 different boards. Lots of jumper wires on the top is a way to avoid a double sided board. I kind of actually prefer it. All those jumpers make convient test points. :)
@buckaroobonsi5558 жыл бұрын
I never thought of it like that!! I just always looked at it as unsightly and messy. Kind of like an engineering after thought! Ic an see how it would make for convenient test point and reduce the cost and complexity of a board now that you point that out! Yes that is why I always wonder what cool features, options modes etc....I am missing out on when I see all of empty silk screened pads. Could I have had 300 more channels? Could I have had asymmetric feed forward modulation? Could I have had an swr bridge that does not require calibration every time I want to use it? I am unfortunately one of those anal retentive audiophiles that can hear the difference and as much as I like to make fun of myself and other's like me often there is a very noticeable difference. I am also a musician I play trumpet, flugel horn, euphonium and from time to time the tuba. Luckily I am not so anal retentive that I have to have perfection in all things audio and do not expect such in my truck or other peoples cars and trucks or in most peoples stereo equipment etc. I am only picky at home with my own equipment when talking about sound quality and with my own headphone amp and headphones I by etc....My gear is all old stuff from late 1970 through early 1990's always used. A lot of audiophiles have more money than brains or they have unrealistic expectations about what to expect in the real world and from other's. Luckily I am not so full of myself and I know I am odd and not at all normal! LOL I think some audiophiles think their OCD and expectations are normal and rational! LOL It is ok to lie to other's but you should never lie to yoruself! LOL I do wish I could have a radio that was sensitive to weak signals but not so insanely full of noise. I do get tired of my ear's bleeding and terrible headaches trying to pull weak stations out of the noise and get a QSL! If you squelch the noise you miss out on some fantastic opportunities! I am looking for a decent used DSP on Ebay to see if I can lose some of the noise and harshness with out losing all the weak signals. It is not so much the fidelity of the 2 way radio I really want improved it is the darn noise that is always present! Sure higher fidelity would be nice but my main issue is the white noise in the background especially when you have no traffic on a channel!
