Your USB button is upside down! Yep, I replaced the burnt out bulb in the 430 with an LED and ballast resistor. I also tore down my PS-430 power supply and took the pig tail fuse off the little internal board and mounted a 12 volt fuse holder in the back of the power supply so I wouldn't have to tear down the supply just to replace the 12 volt fuse. While I had the radio and power supply covers off, I sanded them down and repainted with a nice light color grey which went well with the Kenwood grey & I think we used the same colour of grey. Well, you did the LED just like I did it even using the little metal bulb holder. I also took all the knobs off and the front plate and gave them all a bath; getting the face plate was kinda fidley trying to get all the buttons in place before putting the screw back into the VFO spot. Excellent -- amazing how many wires and jumpers etc. -- more so that in the tube counterparts I recall from my folks Collins rigs. I've got a Kenwood TS-430S. Not really used it, but replaced the battery in it. Otherwise seemed OK. In process of putting up a 75 - 10 EFHW - looking forward to my first HF contacts. Lots more functions in these rigs -- it always amazes me how they were able to sell them for a reasonable price. But debugging them is no picnic; ...but it least it could be done. Nowadays so many ASICs and unnamed parts and surface mount all making low level troubleshooting generally futile. Thankyou.

Kindly advise: I extracted the output filter board of a TS-430S to work on it. Issues: 1. Intermittent low rx (probably "dirty" relays). It appears they are all sealed (except the tx/tx relay). I tried using a "wetting voltage" as described in a Kenwood service bulletin, but there is still intermittent loss of rx, especially on 10m. 2. One of the inductors (L41) is shorted. 3. How do you test a diac (D18)? (It reads short circuit in both directions.) Apparently it is for overload/surge protection. 4. The S meter reads extremely low. I failed to recalibrate S9 (even with the trim at maximum, it doesn't reach 9).

Thankyou Peter. I am engaged in trying to solve the same constant tone problem as you had and indeed, wiggling things near the 5v regulator does as did in your video. Yellow text in your video states that you have removed and replaced Electrolytic caps c118 and 119 which I ordered and have arrived. However, I have examined the circuit board diagrams and the THREE capacitors in that region appear to be C116, 117 and 118. I can't see a C119 on the service manual representation of the board at all (almost certainly brain freeze) but it doesn't appear to be in the area you were working at all. Any light you could shed on this please. I'd be most grateful

Righty Ho.. update for you Peter. I followed the section where I replaced the electrolytic caps 116 and 118. I also replaced the 5 V regulator (during which procedure the bolt holding the old one on sheared and left no purchase to remove the stub). I've used thermal compound between the regulator and the chassis and secured the regulator to the chassis with a strong metal clip. Results?? Well... the horrible tone is completely gone, the display all works fine, the radio is all working lovely and, although I have no idea why, is apparently giving a local station 2 s points more than he used to get from me. I still have a vestigial problem... and bearing in mind you helped me get out of this situation, I'll ask if you have any knowledge of why this should be happening. I'll try to explain.... My symptoms were not EXACTLY the same as yours. i got that horrible tone you got, mine was intermittent, and when the tone kicked in I lost the display, all audio (except the tone) and the radio did not transmit. This often manifested itself on bootup. Once in this horrible state, it never righted itself, but could be coaxed to work by touching/prodding the metal surrounding for the IF board in the region near the area you and I have both worked on. Then everything would kick back into life. Since the repairs I have had no nasty tone, no loss of display, no loss of audio, BUT I still have an intermittent "no transmit" situation... (all modes). These events happen - often on bootup, and hey ho, can be put right by touching the the metal surrounding the if board in the area we worked on!. . As I write this, my radio has not done this irritant for 48 hours... but I have done nothing to fix it so I am inclined to think it will happen again. Whatever, the state of this radio has dramatically improved since watching your video, it inspired me to start and the replacement of the caps was my first ever work on a circuit board. I watched several solder tutorials - practised on a defunct board until I could do it, and then followed your voice and instructions. So you can know that your making this video has helped a guy on the other side of the world fix his radio. I realise that you'd get a lot more "likes" for a budgerigar spinning around on a vinyl turntable, but I'll send you a couple of million virtual "likes" for starting me on a really interesting and ulitmately rewarding operation. Today, Peter Miles, feel good!

Could be anything in the transmit chain, however it is also likely to be something simple like a dry joint or bad lead connection. Try the simplest least expensive fixes first like as in the video unplugging and re-plugging interconnecting leads and then move onto an inspection of the pcb tracks, looking for cracks around component solder points and you will need good eyes. Good luck and keep us posted.

My best advice at this stage is that you need an oscilloscope to track the signal through the radio to where it stops. Most importantly you will also need a block diagram, a schematic of the radio and spend a lot of time working out a divide and conquer strategy. Spend time get familiar with the radio layout and how it relates to both the block diagram and schematic as blindly probing around can accidentally cause serious damage. Spend a lot of time planning what you intend doing........ Another video worth having a look at is 'Kenwood TS-430S Maintenance and Adjustment' by Frank Evoked kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2aZfmx4opKEgpI

I had a look at the schematic and there is no indication that it would anything other than 12v, I also found an add for replacement relays for the TS-430 and the coil voltage was 12v. It is worth checking what is not working as my experience with 430 was that most of the problems were simply oxidized connections. I had a TS-930 that stopped transmitting completely and my first thought was that it was a serious tx board issue like the finals, but it turned out to be nothing more than a oxidized coax connector feeding the tx board. I guess my best advise is work your way through the radio with a scope until you find where the signal stops and then work out what you need to do.

Mine has an extra circuit at the coax connector - a small terminal strip with an RF choke. There is also a DC blocking cap between the coax and the input to the relay board! So to do the DC trick, I'd have to apply the voltage inside the rig. Sadly I have the no transmit problem and and attempting to resolve that. :(

Nice work, I am new to this stuff. I have similar recieve issues. I also have limited output on some bands also. I'm hoping its relays and such. Couple questions. Did you use any lubricant on any of the boards and pots? Also did you identify any dry solder joints. Cheers mate. Great video!
@petermiles65575 жыл бұрын
No lubricant, just a small amount of contact cleaner when cleaning the board inter-connecting wire connectors. No dry joints found, however a few suspect electrolytic capacitors were changed out and it is possible that a dry joint was inadvertently repaired doing this, but not likely. I think dry joints would more likely have occurred in the PA where there would more heat cycling stress on solder joints, luckily there were surprisingly no issues in the PA stage in my radio. Your low power may be dry joints in the PA stage, but do the easy work first and check for poor connectors through out the radio as this my fix the power problem. Let us all know how you go..... Cheers and thanks for the comment.

I just acquired on of these and was looking through videos saw where you can clean the contacts with a 12vdc and a 20 ohm 5watt resistor by pulsing the current through the antenna connector to ground say it burns off the oxidation on the relays after 5 minutes or so ill try it first see if it works i think your method is better just FYI
@petermiles65574 жыл бұрын
I had the resistor(s) and was going to try the 12v method, however thought that the situation was so bad and had the radio open for all the other issues, so I decided to manually clean the relay contacts.
@mikeZL3XD70293 жыл бұрын
@Fred guitarman, I would be rather careful doing something like that, introducing 12V through the antenna connector has the inherent risk of damaging the whole front-end of the radio, some of them bits in the line are quite sensitive to voltage of that amplitude. Cheers, Mike ZL3XD.
