We finally got our Kenworth T680 back from the shop.... the big question.... do aerodynamic trucks really work? Well watch the video to find out if they work for us ? Should we switch our fleet 😜

My 2014 Mack uses less def when it's running 75mph than when it's running 62mph. It uses more fuel, but it's burning cleaner because def and the DPF basically are there to stop the "rolling coal" that happens when you're lugging it and on the throttle. So when you do these mega fleet fuel economy speeds where you're barely fast enough to be in overdrive, you're gonna tax the emissions systems constantly. Same goes for idling and lots of stop and go.

Great Video! Good honest information....well done! My personal T600 vs W900 comparison has had a little better results, but I've never had the over dimension loads you're hauling regularly. Given that extra weight & width, lower gears, etc. I can see why they wouldn't be any better on fuel. Too bad we can't keep using pre-emission equipment forever.

The emissions are the enemy for sure. Interesting to see yours so low on mpg but the 100k weight may be the equalizer. My T680 has a true year long avg mpg of 6.0 mph with 500hp 3.36 gear and condo roof. However I am never overweight with max at 80k yet usually towards 80k say 76k+. I bought a app that has helped with emissions paid for it self quick when emission issues cam up. It's called OTR Diagnostics. It will get you out of a derate jam. I might not fit the super trucker genera because I love the T680 interior above all other trucks and I like the areo look.

I pull a 4 axle dump trailer in Ontario around the 130k lbs mark. When I drove a company truck I was getting somewhere around 4.2-4.3 mpg in a 2015 bubble nose Mack. I bought a 379 with a C-15 and on summer fuel I was averaging 4.6 mpg doing the same work. Granted, I drive differently now that I'm paying for fuel. Although you can't argue that aerodynamics aren't a factor, an old pre-emission motor can still hold it's own when compared to newer technology in regards to fuel economy when driven properly. Obviously DEF and emissions system maintenance are a huge factor on new trucks. When I bought my truck I had a few other things in mind as well. Like you said, your drivers always choose the old long hood trucks over the newer ones. I wanted to own a truck that I also wanted to drive. Old trucks are simple, you can usually work on them yourself without having to hook up the laptop to tell you what's wrong with it. The extra space under a long hood is a huge bonus there and can also save you money on shop labour when you're paying somebody to work under the hood. But one big factor people sometimes leave out is resale value. That 2015 heavy spec Mack I was driving was around $200k cnd when new. 5 years later its worth $25-30k. An old 379 or W9 will pretty much sell for what you paid for it as long as you keep it looking good and maintain it.

They said the emissions systems were never gonna let the engines run right anymore... That’s REALLY FUCKING SAD. Al Gor and the DemocRATS nearly destroyed our trucking industry. Hell, most of the old drivers are alreadt retired and there’s not enough new drivers coming in. CAT took there businesses elsewhere to the Construction, Industrial, and Marine sectors where they have a strong following and no emmisions needed on the engines. I don’t blame them.

If I am in hills I get about 5.9 to 6.2. This includes loaded over the rockies and up and down 77 in Virginia at about 78000 gross. When I get out on the flats dead heading back to load pulling an empty tank I get 9+ so the trip to the tankwash and back to get loaded is cheap in this 576 pete with mx13 in it and supers. Not sure about the ratio sets at 1400 rpm at 65mph. I DO NOT IDLE and the epu keeps me comfortable if I use my curtains right. And I check my tire pressures twice daily if not more when loaded. 1 tire 10 pounds low is .5 mpg or more depending on terrain and avg speed.

I’ve just read the reviews and we’re getting loads of problems with def as you call it (adblue) we call it in Gt Britain 🇬🇧. Why we tend to get better fuel economy is the difference in the trucks we use . All cabovers as you call them ,we use close coupled trailers so the gap between the trailer and the cab is tight also most trucks have wind defectors ,no double drives except for heavy haulage ,we tend to run on 3 axles for 44 ton use with the 3rd axle being a mid lift or a tag axle which can be lifted when running empty . The truck I drive runs at 44 ton it’s a MAN 400 hp lucky to get 6.5 to the gallon and loads of trouble with the def system. Also we run on 3 axles on our trailers and use super single wheels and tyres and our axles on the trailers are further up the chassis so less drag perhaps you could look at that as a way of getting better fuel consumption other than that love your trucks would swap a MAN for a kenworth any day 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧
@flintcreektransport
@flintcreektransport 3 жыл бұрын

@adriandavis9790 3 жыл бұрын
Yes 44 ton is our gross weight . I pull a powder tanker and the maximum I can get on is 29.5 tons and then gross out just under 44 tons so always run just under the legal weight limit .so yes most trailers in the UK 🇬🇧 run on 3axles with super singles and all trucks plated for 44 tons must be on 3 axles . Great vlogs 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Well, there you go. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I heard these new emissions engines were crap but you really nailed it down. You helped me make up my mind as to whether I should buy a new truck or go with an older pre-emissions engine. I would do a glider but my shop is not set up to do a large engine installation and all the glider shops are backed up for a year. Maybe the virus has given them some catch up time. Maybe not. I'll have to call them and see what's the skinny. Never was a big Cummins fan and I always liked the C15 CAT. If there is such a thing as a bullet proof engine, the C15 is it! All I read in the reports is how NEW Class 8 truck sales are WAY down year over year, over year, over.... No wonder they are off when this is what the owners and the operators see as fact of the matter. Meanwhile, Fitzgerald Gliders can't build them fast enough. Just two cents worth from a bed-bugger of 28 years.

The more complexity introduced into a system, the more variables and draw on the system itself. When we started down the emissions road back in the 80s, pieces and parts were tacked on to meet EPA requirements. As electronics became more sophisticated, things got a little better. Now we're trying to burn diesel and exhaust rainbows and rose blossoms. The complexity required to attempt that is sufficient to make a diesel motor unreliable and expensive to own and fix. So you can douse that pig in all the marketing perfume you want, but at the end of the day, it's real-world performance/experience that puts those double dashes on the bottom line.

I have no idea what you haul, with those numbers it's got to be heavy. But I'm convinced, a good driver, in a truck that is built to do the specific job is going to be comparable to a new truck as far as fuel milage. There are other channels that will argue, but I still think the way a truck is set up, and a driver that knows how to driver for fuel economy, you're better off with an older pre emissions truck.

I've started trucking in 1979. Now I am retired. I have been watching the trucking industry from behind this computer. It does look bleak. It's sad. However, I think i may have caught a promising solution to this dilemma. On board hydrogen generators! The units generate hydrogen on demand. Oxygen is also produced. Without going into all the details on how this works, I'll cut to the chase. Both Oxygen and hydrogen are introduced into the air inlet, and into the combustion chamber. More power is produced. The process also has a cleaning effect on the engine. The def filters start to run clean. If I understand this correctly, the re-gen becomes unnecessary. SO, you no longer have to delete the def to get better service from the engine, nor do you have to be concerned about getting caught, because nothing was bypassed or disconnected. The truck is still legal. Just run the truck like it came from the dealer. It MAY be unnecessary to put def fluid in the def tank. All this results in 10 to 35 percent increase in fuel mileage. And emissions are way down. This has been out now for at least 10 years, i think. This could be tried on a "guinea pig" truck, and watched closely for the results. I enjoy all your presentations, and will subscribe.

Hey, I have a question for you.. I’m looking to get into pneumatics.. I’m stuck on what truck to get between w900 or something more aero dynamic.. the company I’m leasing too I can’t have an older model truck has to be 5 year or newer when first leasing on.. I’ll be running 80k gross.. I want a w900 of course but I’m worrying about fuel mileage.. any suggestions?

Aerodynamics play a smaller part than correct gearing and engine choices. Those are most important …..see the video I did comparing a t680 to a w900.

Sir, could I get your opinion. I'm a brand new trucker, considering between a W900 and T680... now, I'm on the west coast and will be driving a lot in CA. They say you have to have emissions trucks. But, I see lots of old W900 rolling in CA. If I were to buy an older 900, what do you have to do to get them up to speed on emissions, etc.?

I have a hunch they could be licensing those trucks out of state to get around the law …. I wouldn’t recommend putting emissions on a older truck !! If you buy a new truck remember it can still be in the shop for a few weeks or month waiting on parts …. If ur just getting into it maybe a short term lease from Ryder. They will guarantee u a truck ….. so if 1 goes down just swap it out …… I will say the newer trucks are more reliable but still have issues !

Love the video, Boss-Dude. Once one gets over 455 hp, the emissions go bad quickly. Just too much particulate per unit time on the given filtration medium. Add the heavy loads and it’s a recipe for disaster. Since 2010 the emission engines have been lower on economy. I have a 2017 Cascadia DD15. I run reefer, probably average 77k almost all loaded miles. My MPG is 7.1 on a manual 10. I’m going automatic next time around to get the extra 1.5 - 2mpg. Don’t think a manual/automatic would survive a year under your applications. I feel for you heavy operators and I hope at some point they drop this after treatment crap. I’m certainly not telling you things you don’t know, but you will probably have to insert a complete after treatment system replacement every 350-400k. Cha-chiiiiing!!! Have you done a video on the ramifications for your fleet due to any proposed carbon-credit legislation? I’m dreading it.

Aerodynamic trucks CANNOT do every job. They are good for hauling box trailers, and gasoline tankers. Carlisle Transpotation on Ice Road Truckers is a prime example. They use only Kenworth W900 and T800. The emissions engine and technology is the primary reason Caterpillar got out of the trucking business for new trucks. The new truck engines are making money for the towing companies .In the winter,if you try to warm up an aerodynamic truck, it can catch fire due to the tons of plastic parts and more sensors than on an early model 747.

Being you don't talk about what you haul and you only talk about weight there are a lot of variables as fuel millage. Also the 2016 was at the very beginning of the new def system. No truck is going to get good fuel millage if you are at 100k and oversize. Also what millage are you servicing the def system, the gearing may be the same but I doubt the rest of the w900 and the T680 are the same as far as the Chases. The T680 was designed to be an over the road truck hauling van trailers, not over sized heavy loads. Also idling has a huge effect of fuel millage on the new trucks, as it effects them a lot more than the old trucks as far as the DEF system goes. I personally wouldn't have gotten a T680 for you application. I also would have an APU on the truck so they don't idle any more that they absolutely have to. Would be nice if you would give a little more information on what kind of trailers you haul, and not just weight.

What gets me about all this emission crap is that the engine mfr's. are trying to design cheap instead of designing for the long haul. The 'Green' infected EPA is the biggest issue. The 'environmentalists' as they like to call themselves, don't know what they're talking about but Earth is going to be destroyed if they(& they mean us) don't do something right now. Except they don't specify what that something is. Just give them your money & they'll think of something. All this emissions hysteria is costing jobs, making consumer goods more expensive & we won't make a dent in the climate. Good video, Thanks.

I’ve seen several MX 13s over a million miles already. One with 1,226,000. Not as mighty as the Cummins but more durable. That B10 rating may be true after all. That’s regular highway trucks though. I doubt they may do as well in heavy haul applications such as these.

Not being funny, but if your mpg is that bad on your trucks then there's two problems. Use another engine manufacturer, secondly it could well be a driver issue. Just a thought, and also European trucks are regulated by the emissions laws as well , and to be honest the truck im is running at 44 tons and ive had no issues with emissions equipment fitted to my Scania , plus im still getting between 8 and 10 to the gallon loaded . In fact many haulage firms here are getting the same mpg to be honest. As for Cummins engines they might have a good reputation for reliability but unfortunately the same can't be said for fuel economy.

I think this is a driver problem. When u give drivers "large cars" they will goose them up all day.
