Redlining was impose as form of segregation. But most importantly to prevent black people from owning properties and generate capital. Thus, bkack people remains poorer in comparison to whites. Its fair to say that American racism is alive and well.

This intelligent lady had to go through so much for something she deserved. This doesn't shock me if you know your history. The area that she wanted to live was mostly white or gentrified. This is the reason why they gave her a hard time. So many people would have just walked and move to a black area. I don't know why black folks want to be around white People. Make your communities better and pull together .... I'm not saying this was the reason because I'm not 100% sure ... but I know I drive by a lot of white areas and their houses are nicer and mostly no blacks live there .. and it's because of what this lovely lady went through. They created racism and they are too sorry to get rid of it . People rebuild and make your local political leaders do they right thing. This whole system in America is poison and foul.

Stephanie Drake Amen Sista! Whites for the most part have shown through their behaviors that they do not want to reside with African-Americans. I am a Philadelphian who previously resided in University City adjacent to University of Penn. It was a very nice community, but the residents were very racist and prejudice. Integration was the worst thing that happened in America. This redlining malarkey has been going on for decades. The new code word is gentrification. To your point Sista Drake, as Blacks we need to fix up our communities and be happy. I currently reside in a Black nice neighborhood and very content.

I believe all this is true but it's also true that a single white guy who has worked his ass off building houses and being treated like a slave growing up on construction sites gets denied the exact same way if I don't bring my wife along. Her name is first on the mortgage. I would be homeless building and repairing everyone else's homes. It sounds logistically neutral to me but systemic racism impacts poc more. White people deal with the opposite scale, where anything negative is either to or from millions more. It's like unemployment, more poc are impacted but when the larger group is unemployed too it's going to hit the entire economy harder. It's like a heavy hammer on both populations. Our system suuuuucks!!

This is a problem for those who want to live in the city. Yes redlining exist but if they deny you a home loan. There are other options. There is peer to peer lending, personal loans, 0% intreast balance transfers and a line of credit etc. There are mobile homes, townhomes, tiny houses, condo that are affordable ways you can own a home but you may have to love outside the city. I was able to buy a nice home with land using balance transfer credit card option and now I’m a home owner.

The reasons for approval/denying loans is based on 3 variables 1 debt to income ratio. They have to know you make enough money to make the payments. 2 Loan to value. IOW no bank is going to loan $100,000 for a house that only appraises for $55,000 3 Credit score. This is an evaluation of your history of making payments and making them on time Of course none of that applies here because it's all RAY SIZ SUM. Not that it never happens, it's just not as often as they'd like you to believe.

Have they had a lone before? Do they have dependants? A stable job? Like, seriously there are so many variables in getting a easy loan and skin colour isn't one of them!!! Banks just want to know they are getting back their money, that's all, they rate you based on risk factors and thanks based on your spending habits not your skin colour.

You can have a high pay and simultaneously have a low credit score just like you can have a low pay with a high credit score. The credit score looks at an individual's ability to pay back money that they borrowed, not ethnicity. People in these comment section seem to really like the victim mentality. This is just bad news reporting... Quite pathetic. She admits in pbs interviews tht she had bad credit where as her Asian friend had amazing credit (even with less income). I work in the financial advising sector along with loan originators, and I do not see the racism people claim. Maybe someone can chime in. Loans for whites, Asians, Latinos, and blacks all get denied and approved. It really does depend on total leverage ratio, student loans, lines of credit, income etc. I am half white half Asian and I never had any issue with home buying even though I have minority blood in me. Typically large banks are highly conservative in nature. From the mortgage origination perspective, 20% down is what they look for and prefer. Regional banks and credit unions are way more willing to take more risk like FHA 5% down due to their lack of global trading, investment banking, commercial banking, wealth management, private bank revenues etc. Basically, large national banks can afford not to lend to more “risky” clients because of other streams of income through their various subsidiaries.
