@@ashwinipatel5659 actually i'm from kerala and everyone here will get united when such incidents happen.The flood period is a perfect example for that, the mosque halls and temple auditoriums were opened as the relief camps and no any divide was made for using them. Another example is the karippur crash landing, that was the time where the covid was at peak, but the local peoples took the responsibility of the rescue and they have rescued the passengers and took them to the hospital in their own vehicles.

This incident was so horrific because it was the worst that the state has seen after 1924 (that means the worst in almost 100 years)... As per reports, almost 15 per cent of Kerala's GDP was the loss... 13 out of 14 districts in Kerala were affected severely.. I still remember working in relief camps that were set in schools and colleges (since I belonged to the few fortunate ones who were not affected).. After a year I think, the ads and hoardings of "Kerala is Open" still brings goosebumps.. The way the fisherman, the youth of the state etc came together to rescue and help, is just so encouraging of a future generation.. 🙂

The way youth came together during the floods was astounding and was a ray of hope for the future. Call centres were set up across India to reduce the load on police, fire dept. Cloud services were set up in hours to centrally upload data and avoid any sort of duplication. Relief Camps were ready even before people started coming in with Food, Water, Medicines, Sanitary products, baby food etc.. The help received globally was so much that, at a point, things had to be returned back due to excess stock. Thank You to everyone who supported Kerala during those difficult times!🙏🙏🙏

Every single time I watch the video I start crying. Experienced it first hand, my house was under 8 ft of water, had to stay in hotel where there was no food, survived on bread and butter for five days. But we were the very lucky ones. Tamilians always stood by Kerala when help needed. Its our brother state. Even in this flood, apart from Keralites outside the state, it was Tamilians who gave the highest funds and manpower. However, regarding Mullaiperiyar dam issue, the supreme court has given direct verdict to form a disaster management team from center. Whatever the case, there should be water for everybody and should not be any damage to anyone.
@KabiCL

It's a livelihood issue for Tamils who rely on that dam for water because that's all they have. For part of Kerala it is concerned with safety of the dam. So we have to meet at a middle ground to resolve this, as that dam is quintessential for both states instead of stirring up panic among people without scientific evidence and creating enmity between two fraternal states.

I could say there was no Malayali who didn't put in some effort to help some others. We stood together - and that's the spirit of Kerala. Those with flat boats rescued people stranded. Those with four wheel drives went on mountain rescue trips. Those with large trucks, transported people. IT professionals connected the needy to goods and services. I personally was involved in sourcing online special need items like diabetes medicines, disinfectants... And such. Housewives made food packs for distribution... School kids collected groceries and toiletries... Everyone chipped in. And we bounced back pretty fast. 👍

If I remember properly, the locality that live in was the first place the floods hit, before the other districts were flooded. I remember that night so well. The gate of my house is 15 ft away from a river shore, the river is dry almost throughout the year, due to heavy rain it had a decent level of water. It was a normal day until midnight hit. I was sleeping in the living room, I heard my mom's phone buzzing, half awake I took the call, it was from a friend of hers who lived in the next lane, she was panicking, there was noises in the back, she asked me did water get in your house? I was puzzled, I immediately looked at the floor in confusion, there was no water. I told her the same and she told me they opened the dam shutter at midnight and their house has been flooded with water, they are evacuating from the place and asked us to get the hell out too. It was raining cats and dogs that night. I couldn't believe what I heard, it felt like a dream, I walked to my parents bedroom and that's when I realized it wasn't a dream. I could hear the roaring water in the river, I went by the window and stood there still seeing the gushing water taking everything in its way. I stood still. My dad woke up and saw me standing by the window, he thought I was sleep walking, he asked me what happened and I couldn't say a word,I pointed to the window. He looked outside and froze just like me. We immediately woke other up in the house, there was no power. We got outside, surprisingly the water hasn't gotten our house. We packed all we can and went to a neighbors place which won't be hit by flood soon. With each passing hour, each lane drowned. Idk what to call it luck or God's grace, our house didn't flood at all, we lived this close to the river and it never flooded! Mrng with difficulty we left our locality and moved to our uncle's place. More and more areas flooded by morning. I don't think this got a lot of media attention since it wasn't even a whole district, just partial part of a city that drowned. A day or 2 later other dams in the state opened and the rest is what you just saw.

2018 kerala flood was the first actual natural disaster i faced and it changed a lot about me as a person. The realization that nothing matter when something uncontrollable like water rises from all sides and you cant escape it. It takes away all the pride out of you and at the end of the day, we are all human trying to survive. I worked as a volunteer for one of the smaller camps that held 300 people and a man broke down in front of me when he got to know that his entire house was washed away in it. For people who put all their life saving to build a home only for it to be gone just like that, it was hard to see. J was stuck in another district and my family was stuck at home. They kept updating me and said the waters rising but on the 2nd day, all their phone batteries died bc there wasn’t electricity and i had to just live for 3 days just praying that they survived. I would never wish it on anyone.

Kerala has lots of rivers and lakes and dams built over them. When dam shutters were opened back then... there was high tide in sea as well. It was raining heavily, dams were opened, the waterline was increasing, at the same time due to high tide the water released into rivers had no outlet, the sea kept pushing it all back in. Kerala is a narrow strip of land squished between hills on the right (where clouds get stranded) and Arabian sea on the left. A month's worth of rain fell in 2,3 days. We were flooded from left and right as well as from above ( it was raining day and night). There was nowhere to go. It was -_-))))

This video doesn't justify the massive outpour of life saving works the fishermen folks did for us. The force and the current of the water were too much to handle for the air filled boats of the army, they were helpless and couldn't do much because it was impossible for them to steer their boats in those rushing waters. That is when the fishermen folks volunteered on their own, their boats were much more capable because they were used to the harsh currents of the deep sea. It was truly a goosebumps moment when they came with their boats from all over state. They knew that damages that they were gonna face but they still chose to help. Words always fell short for the help that they did. I'm from edappally, we were displaced from our homes for more than two weeks, my house was completely submerged under water. Everything got destroyed. Struggled to eat and drink. Central government refused to help, There were times where we had to survive on a single piece of bread for days. I was working in the tourism sector at that time.... It was horrible... We set up temporary shelters and provided food and basic necessities to the unfortunate.... Roads were blocked, People lost their homes and some even their loved ones... It happened because of the unexpected rainfall, where the dams were full to the brim and were all opened together... Mismanagement by the government authorities... It was a nightmare... This time they played it safe... They started releasing water in small quantities from the dams when they were half full.

My hometown was where you see the submerged temple and airport. Aluva and surrounding villages were submerged in 10-12 feet water for 3 days. 5 lakhs people were affected. It took 7 more days to make house habitable. When people returned , they found snakes in house . One lady killed 33 snakes. My own sister cut a poisonous snake into two !! Though life is back to normal, most people lost some irreplaceable treasures. Things like old photos and letters and books and other keepsakes. Now every year we get alerts and we move stuff upstairs and later bring it down.

I have Uncle's and relatives houses just few 100 feet away from both periyar & chalakudy river (tributary of periyar). Luckily none was wiped of the map and no one injured. Ofcourse there was material losses with 10-12 feet water its expected. One of the relative's old ancestral home (near Desom, Aluva) is so old that it has seen the flood 100 yrs ago too.

This a documentary of 2018, the same almost to the same scale effected in 2019 as well. But the time duration to recover almost more than 50% comparing any other states in India. Was credited by alot of people over time. But people now are living in fear for several years for the the Mulaperiyar DAM's state. A Dam situated in Kerala but doesn't have any use to the internal state but for the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. Is in a verge of breaking... If that happens, a major disaster is waiting for the state of kerala where multiple districts will get washed away from the map itself. This topic has come up in 2021 during recent months as the water level has been increasing beyond the limit of the DAM. By the age of the Dam, the experts say, that can't hold that level of capacity as well... Hence a new DAM has to be created as a Backup to protect the state. But due to lack in funds, the state government is hesitant to initiate any.

I remember flying to Kochi from Vancouver in 2018 August. After reaching Toronto, I came to know that the flight to Kochi from Abu Dhabi is cancelled. So, technically I cannot travel. So, I contacted the airlines company and rebooked myself in a flight that takes off from Abu Dhabi 24 hours after my arrival, that too not to Kochi, but to Trivandrum where the situation was slightly better by that time. I landed in Trivandrum, stayed there for a week and when I went to Kochi via road, I could see and feel the remains and effects of the flood. My only prayer at that time was, "Thank God, my family, relatives, friends and anybody else I know are safe".

#decommissionmullaperiyardam #savekeralabrigade #savekerala Another major issue which kerala is facing at the moment is the issue on Mullaperiyar Dam. This dam is 126 years old and is still a functioning dam. It is in extremely dangerous condition but the government is doing nothing. There is a dispute between Kerala and Tamil Nadu and the Central Government is also doing nothing. In the worst case scenario, if the dam collapses 3-5 million people are expected to loose their life and millions more get affected by this.😭

We survived and rebuilt most of that, Bought back our lives. Just two years later comes "Covid" we did survive that too. After all we are MALAYALEES, A Keralite does not say "quit" that easily, We fight with determination, stands holding hands, when needed. After all we are born between the high mountain and the deep sea, with 44 rivers and numerous canals, Water will come and go. After all this happens every 100 years or so. Nature sometimes takes it all away, But well it gives us a lot too. It is a give and take between us and the Nature.
