Took me about a day to get proprietary nvidia drivers, audio drivers and ksp working on linux, but it really saves you a lot of trouble when going full RSS. i recommend using a "beginner" distro like linux mint if you just wanna get things working. it also gives that nice feeling when you see ksp using 16gb ram and it's still running smoother than on windows with the garbage collector going full speed. if you just want to fix the shadows/graphic glitches, d3d11 might work(gave me ram usage reduction like opengl). staying on windows severely limits the texture resolution for graphic enhancement mods though. linux also gives as much antialiasing as you want ;)

Scott Manley RVE conflicts with the contracts of RP-0, because it renames Earth back to Kerbin. Scott Manley Moral of the story, get rid of RVE for now cause it's quite buggy at the moment and only works on Earth anyway. Install normal EVE and you will get shadows and clouds back on
@sput429 жыл бұрын
Scott Manley Seems like the old EVE (7-4) still works fine with RSS. Haven't had the time to launch anything, so I'm not sure if the clouds are volumetric, but they're there (not too many in Florida, it seems). I simply installed EVE via CKAN. I also tried the clouds from Astronomer's Pack with that, and that also seems to work, it's just not enough clouds for my taste. I guess I'll try (manually) installing the appropriate parts of KSPRC next; as far as I remember, that one allowed changing the cloud density. EVE Overhaul, on the other hand, doesn't seem to do much in RSS without also having RVE; I guess it relies more on the planet names than the old version.

It looks like you're trying to run the RVE (RSS Visual Enhancements) pack which is still in early beta (or alpha even). You'd be much better off running the stable "Astronomer's Pack Interstellar" which is installable with CKAN and is running well on my RSS/RP-0 installation. It may not look as pretty as RVE would (if it did not have that many artifacts), but it works and does not have any artifacts. Best way to run a full high-res RSS would be on Linux-x64, because it will be tough to stay below the 4GB limit with that many high-res mods running on Windows 32.
@jflo7899 жыл бұрын
Jerone Floor Also, when you do this career, you should look into the "TestFlight" mod. It works quite well with RO/RP-0 and adds additional realism to it.. Without equipment failure it would be too easy to beat both the US and USSR into orbit. Additionally, you should use Kerbal Alarm Clock, go to the 'calendar' tab in the settings and set it too "Earth calendar". This will set the clock to 01/01/1951. Then set KSP to display Earth Time (24h clock) and you will have a true earth date and time.. Works great with Kerbal Construction Time.

Please, do something including RT2 w/ kOS. Those mods are getting nearly stable and it's a complete game changer to have com-eclipse and/or com-delay, hence I suggest kOS to be able to over come that. Well, unless it's too complicated to write a landing script or a circularization burn sequence.

Random explosions happens when your part's weight is less than 10kg. Known KSP issue for small parts mods.
@jimbo33739 жыл бұрын
Hey man, love your videos, weird that you have no shadows because I'm sure my RSS version does... If that's the case it could be hardware, but no idea. It's annoying to see that you had the random launch clamps being detached too and the parts lost due to reheating on launch (confirming that they are in fact bugs). I launched a pretty big rocket and before my frame rate caught up I actually saw the re-entry animations all over the craft in the same direction as the Earth's rotation so something to do with spawning the atmosphere and spawning the rocket with the surface orbital velocity? Could be fixed by the modders by disabling the reentry effects for the first few seconds after spawning on the pad?
@shadow2stalker9 жыл бұрын
Might I suggest that you rather use 64-bit windows and well directX. I have been playing around with mods on ksp, and found that even though the 64-bit version is less stable, for me it does not brake with all these mods. I guess you might be limited to mac with intel/radeon graphics cards? I have found that ksp tends do run better on nvidia. I ran tests on 5 of each to test performance and stability with extreme graphics mods. Found that nvidia was best compatible. These are only suggestions from personal experience, some people might have other opinions, but hopefully I don't spark a whole argument. Please keep any replies on this post relevant to the video. Thanx for the videos Scott

Scott, have you read the book 'Seveneves' by Neal Stephenson? If you have, could you do a video some time about the orbital maneuver in the second act, concerning moving the space station? There where some details that seemed wrong to me, particularly the part where the orbit was only circularized at the very last, instead of at least raising the periapses to a safer altitude immediately.
@scottmanley9 жыл бұрын
***** raising periapse is the same as circularizing.
@PeRSCiTio9 жыл бұрын
Scott Manley Not if you only raise the periapsis to a safe amount, it doesn't imply the periapsis being on the same height as the apoapsis
@Vikingwerk9 жыл бұрын
Scott Manley I am aware that raising the periapse is the same as circularizing. What I was referring to, in this book (which got quite a bit right about orbital maneuvering) was the part where the space station was suffering slight atmospheric drag at periapsis, (which would slowly lower the apoapsis) and they where attempting to raise the entire orbit out to the moon. As it was described, they never bothered to raise the periapsis out of the atmospheric drag, but spent two years burning once per orbit at periapsis to push the apoapsis out, and then finally circularized the orbit at the end. I guess my question is, on a long slow orbital change, is circularizing all at once after raising the apoapsis more efficient somehow than burning at both apoapsis and periapsis to maintaining a mostly circular orbit, while increasing the altitude. (and in the case of this book, thereby get rid of the losses caused by the atmospheric drag at each periapsis.)

Scott: screw how pretty it is. Maybe there's a lighter RSS imagery mod, maybe there isn't. Just get the scale right and make the physics work. I'll love it just as much, maybe even more, if it's a 6,378km radius Kerbin instead of Earth.

Ohh propeller engine. Why doesnt KSP have this by default :P not only would that be fun and interesting, But it would add more progression in planes.

Scott Manley Have you thought about trying to use Linux to get your RSS working. I've heard that 64 bit KSP in Linux is a heck of alot more stable than in windows.

Umm, you do know that the above video was done in OpenGL. I think the OpenGL FPS problems is related to GPU performance. In Scott's case, its an R9 290, plenty of raw power.

Running my KSP on linux, I have no option but to use opengl graphics. Though I had never problems with shadows in recent versions, I can only guess that it is the EVE configurations that make the difference? I use the Astronomer's Pack configuration for EVE, Planetshine and scatterer with 4k textures and medium clouds, installed with ckan and no further changes. Don't use RSS though. My specs: NVIDIA Corporation GK106 [GeForce GTX 660] (nvidia driver version 352.21) Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz 16 GB Ram (and good thing KSP supports more than 4 GB on linux, my mods use 6 GB) Can't tell if it's the configs, other graphics driver, the different operating system or simply some kind of mod-conflict. (I could look into the latter if you give me a list of the mods you use... and look into the configs as well...)

Perhaps try enabling the 4GB header? It doesn't solve RAM hogging... Just allows you to use more than 3GB.

Looks like the model center of gravity for the booster rocket is poorly modeled.. it shouldn't be spinning right around its trailing edge.

Please, Scott, please please please switch over to Linux. You get to keep your shadows and as many mods as you want, and the trouble of setting things up for Linux will save you hundreds of crashes and dozens of hours of heartache while recording and re-recording after memory access violation crashes and dealing with KCT breaking randomly if you crash during a scene change. Six hours to set up Ubuntu and your driver's (if that) will easily beat out the effort you'll put into trying to run RSS without it looking compressed to garbage on Windows.

Cleric Linux is cool and all but program support, while getting better, is still weak. Not very good for a person who makes videos about quite a lot of different games, not all of which run on Linux.

jwenting You pretty much get the same features Windows 7 users get for free. That's a pretty big deal in my opinion. The only problems are the lack of official support, large number of games that wont support the platform, and some driver issues. Everything else can be solved with just a little bit of brain power and Google. I honestly think the reason a large number of people don't like Linux is because they don't want to have to do any work to get it working correctly, something you have to do with Windows anyway, and because they are butthurt that they spent a large chunk of money on a product that has pretty much the same features as a product they could have gotten free. The only reason I bought Windows was because it has more game support, and I am a big game player. I hated buying it though, you don't get anywhere near what you pay for it. And the support for Windows is absolutely horrible, you have to wait for almost an hour to talk to anyone, and when you finally get someone they are extremely hard to understand due to an accent, then they ask you to reboot your machine and call back.

jwenting Nice try, but I run Windows 10 90% of the time. Literally the only reason I dual boot with Linux is for KSP 64-bit. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

In a video in March you said you will use SmartParts and KerbalOS (or kerbalScript) in your Series! Will you? Please?
