Just one tip you didn't give, Scott (or two because I'm a nitpicker). First, the key to easy land dockings are Klaws. Then you only need one on a fuel truck, for example. Also, engineers are supposed to increase yield too depending on level, I don't think you mentioned that. Awesome series and pumped up for RSS!

rune12358 Good point about the engineers
@curiouskarl54859 жыл бұрын
rune12358 The engineers are actually my main question about this whole ISRU system. Do engineers increase ore-mining yield, or do they speed up fuel refinement, or both? Do multiple engineers multiply the benefits or does it max out at one? I haven't tested this yet, was hoping someone knew. I'd also love to know if anyone has much in the way of specific information about the new radiator system. We know the drill and ISRU system will work without them. Do radiators actually do anything when a craft is not overheating? Scott Manley said they might "accelerate the process" but I was wondering if anyone had more details. I'll probably do some experiments of my own but I'd still very much appreciate hearing what anyone else has figured out.

I realize this was finished months ago, but I only just discovered it this morning when attempting to learn how to play this game properly. I've watched a lot of tutorials for various games in my lifetime, and definitely a ton about KSP before finding this series. I learned more in one of your videos than I did in 10 others trying to explain how to get into orbit easily, how to dock, or how to land on a planet. Thank you, Scott, for creating this series. It's helped me understand this game so much more, and pushed my enjoyment of the game exponentially!

i think it's better this way, because going through just the basics (how to make orbit, orbital mechanics, docking, eva, science, probes, landing..) with a few advanced examples doesn't spoil the game. :)
@spiguy4209 жыл бұрын
Jean-Luc Saikaly My exact thinking. Except the bit about rushed. I think for we that have come this short journey, kinda get the idea of going places. For me is kinda sad, I use this series as a mentor kinda of thing. Is the way I learn best I think. That would make me a very bad scientist I guess, but one can only dream... But thankfully I was able to but a hitchhiker flying tuna can to orbit mun and back in one piece! This series really taught me the basics and how to estimate if your flying bomb has enough kick to go where you want to go and back...
@FatboyGengiz9 жыл бұрын
Jean-Luc Saikaly I agree. There's nothing here about the three different levels of ore scanning. (5.62% ore is a pretty low reading.) Nothing about including Engineers for their exponential increase on mining speed. (Even a level 0 engineer allows 5x drill speed!) Nothing about the increased efficiency of setting up an orbital refining station so you're *not* carrying your refinery up and down to/from orbit every time. As a fan of the rest of the series, it's just a shame this was wrapped up so grudgingly.
Thank you for putting this series together. I've enjoyed watching and following your adventures in KSP.

Thanks for the tutorials just bought the game it's been a lot of fun. Although I still need to upgrade mission control and what not, I learned how to put things into a pretty nice orbit without maneuvers, but when I unlock it I will be able to make even better orbits. Fixing to launch my first manned space station, it's a beast, bout 10-15 tons I believe so I will be combining a science station with a refueling station with the eight docking ports for the main module. As well as adding a healthy dose of thrusters to move it or preposition it with the main engine. Going to launch it sometime today. I am pretty sure it will make it, I added boosters to the second stage as well to make sure it will reach orbit on the first shot. My very first manned mission I launched I managed to get into orbit and de-orbit as well thanks to watching these vids so thanks a lot, I'm not that much of a noob. :) I will get back after launching the first part of my main space station, eventually I want to use it to launch missions to the mun and beyond.

After I did my career play through in the Kerbal Universe, I was looking for something different. Wow, did I find something. After installing RSS, FAR and some other needed mods, I had my biggest sense of accomplishment, getting the first ComSat into a geostationary orbit. The sense of accomplishment was by far greater, than anything I have done in the entire career mode in the Kerbal system. I wish, you could show the world what humanity accomplished by going to the Moon, setting up com and spy satellites into different orbits around Earth, how to land a rover on Mars, building the ISS, flying supply missions etc. etc. 9000Dv, just to get into orbit, yeah baby!

That thing would have been perfect if you had put a docking port between the fuel processor and the fuel tank, and put radial engines on the tank. Could have flown that up and down on its own, leaving the ore and fuel processor and drills down below. Its perfectly set up for it! None the less, thanks for the very thorough tutorial and for replying to comments, Ive still picked up a lot of stuff from you!
@Nightlurk9 жыл бұрын
As for docking on planets through vanilla. I've tried this extensively, and the best success I had was with landing gear. You simply have landing gear on your rover, only on one side, the side with the docking port, like for example in the back. Then you have the docking port on the belly of the rover, while the craft you dock with has the docking port on a lateral extension, like a metal plate, facing upwards. So you maneuver the rover so that its docking port is right above the other docking port, then you raise its landing gear so that it falls down on it, connecting the ports. You may have to raise/lower the gear a couple of times till it clicks, but out of my tests this was the best choice. Trying to have the docking ports laterally instead of vertically, and trying to match the "height" between them so they line up, is very hard and usually you'll have to resort to the landing gear tactic anyway. Oh and if you're thinking "I'm gonna put the docking port at the top and fly my other ship right on top of it", then good luck with that! It's definitely possible, but you'll waste a lot of fuel in the process and you also need to be really good at flying the craft. Obviously on Minmus this would work out easiest due to low gravity. I would say, if you're gonna go for surface docking, just install the kerbal attachment system mod. Personally I feel like that mod should be included in the default game, it just feels silly that Kerbals managed to fly to other planets but have yet to discover how to pull a fuel line between two objects...

For your next playthrough how about this: A rogue comet has collided with Dres blasting off a massive cloud of debris headed toward Kerbol. The orbit of Kerbin will pass through the debris cloud in X years causing a mass extinction event. Starting from scratch you must build a working extra planetary habitat, outside kerbin orbit, with enough ships and renewable resources to support sustainable life off planet before Kerbin is uninhabitable. You also have to keep to a realistic building time mod and this would probably require a life support and habitation mod. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thank you Scott for this great seria. I've learned a lot =) About mining: I looked into some forums, but cant figured out what would be more efficient: moving the refinery with the tanker-vessel up and down like you did or place the refinery fix on the surface or refine the ore in orbit. My assumption is that it would be the best to leave the refinery on the ground and just carrying the ready fuel into orbit, but could depend on the configuration of the mission. Saludos desde germany :)

The kerbal mod community is so big that maybe some new things is interesting to explore now. Anyways thank you for bringing Kerbal to my life.

If you want to avoid the docking port height problem, you can build a rover with a fuel tank and a claw on it. It can dock with the mining rig, suck up some fuel, and then drive over to your lander and refuel it. That would be more practical if the claw weren't so annoyingly buggy, but it does work some of the time...
