I love your channel and just subscribed now that I'm returning to KSP after a few years away. I've got to say you have seriously over-engineered that escape pod. You really only need enough fuel and thrust to reduce your periapsis to low atmosphere, and maybe a bit of RCS to move away from the station and orient the craft. Maybe a battery and/or solar panel to make sure the vessel has enough power to land safely. But you certainly don't need that much fuel or propellant to de-orbit. That thing could get you from the station to a Munar orbit if you wanted!

I have to admit i struggled with the first half of this (rocket seemed really unstable so i turned the engine Gimbal to locked and managed to get it into low orbit) but other than that everything worked really well once I got used to the docking controls! Great work. Now to figure out what to put on the empty side :D

I played with the gimbal seemed better when I left it on hmm...ah well if it worked for you cool. I put an extended arm on the small empty port and an orange tank on the end on mine, I need to edit that video taking some time as got a head cold :-(

Ah damn, hope it clears up soon! Yeah thinking fuel storage is a good idea, might play around with a sort of shuttle type craft design that can dock on the small one. Or failing that will make it Dragon compatible with the spaceX mods part :D

***** The best advice I can give is just mess around, learning by doing is always best like find out what happens to your orbit when you burn this or that way, practice landing on Kerbin it's harder but helps a lot, and blow stuff up it's the Kerbal way

I've been experimenting with landing a mobile station on Mun (basically a command module/science module but with wheels) so i can drive around Mun doing science at its various biomes and be able to leave kerbals there to experiment. But I so far can't get it right. It keeps falling apart and just doesn't function well. Also it blows up if so much as someone sneezes on it. COuld you maybe do a tutorial on mobile bases? Something like this would be good even to dfive around Kerbin to obtain science points at various biomes too

Immortalcheese Plan to do so when we go mining to the Mun, probably test the equipment on Kerbin before shipping to the Mun, can't fix it when its out there and it fails.

how do you transfer fuel? and what are the buttons for building the air shield? love the vids by the way keep them coming :D

+Thomas Wolstencroft to transfer fuel right click on a tank and hold down ALT key the right click on the other tank you should see the in out buttons. For the air shield or shroud just right click you should see build and delete i think, when your shaping the shroud left click snaps the shape where it is right click undoes that to finish it though shape it to the center then left click it should snap together and done. Hope that helps :)

My space station is called the Orb I and the boosters i use for allignment i call them the Iters.... lol Anyways when the Iters are done i switch to them, make sure they make it through the atmosphere, than watch them explode! why do i find that so appealing?

Where did you get the Remote RCS controller from? Im new to KSP and i havent found it in the game. is it a mod and if so which mod pack is it from? id really like to build this but like i said i cant find it and evey other controller has been unsuccessful in controlling the RCS system remotely

It's a mod called mechjeb it allows automation of the craft, there are videos showing how to use and guides how to install mods, it's an excellent tool and more to real life as Nasa uses automated systems.

The idea was to use the little probe like they use the robotic arm on the international space station, in part 4 I need to use it as I try to dock a fuel tank to the station with struts, using MechJeb made it much easier as there was no control on the struts so they drifted when decoupled using MechJebs auto docking otherwise they would have been lost in orbit.

When I launch the escape pod stage, it starts to turn towards the ground right away. According to the nav ball, it is being controlled by the upside down capsule. How do I fix this?

Help ! My rocket wont fly straight. Even when im using mechjeb for launch. If I use mechjeb it starts spinning and later loses control. Without mechjeb it starts turning to the left. This is for the escape pod.

why did you put RCS thrusters on the escape module when you dindn't have a RCS fuel tank on there?

+John Eriksson RCS thrusters were placed to balance the craft for docking maneuvers, you need to place them at equal distance from the center of mass so thats where they ended up

+John Eriksson Make sure the RCS tanks have fuel and they aren't disabled, also make sure you have electric charge and if it is a command pod you need a Kerbal to control it, hope that helps ;)

Just start basic even NASA had trouble the first time they were Rendezvous and docking, also pay attention to the Nav ball I use that most of the time for manouvers

As the space station gets larger and as such its mass, does it affect its orbit/velocity? I assume in real life it would, but I wonder about the game's engine limitations.

Immortalcheese True in real life but not just due to the mass, the effects due to mass on the international space station is tiny cant even measure it, but the surface area does as the atmosphere doesnt stop at a point in real life then they get atmospheric drag so they have to boost the station up every now and again using around 25-100m/s. Theres also gravity anomaly's (caused by large land masses etc..) but they are small as well but yes there is a slight difference in speed but in a perfect universe the orbit speed would be the same at any altitude no matter the size of the space station if it does reduce in speed then the orbit height would be reduced.

Thanks. Yea I recently read that the ISS is within the thermosphere of earth, so there is still slight drag. What about in KSP? If you add mass to your space station in KSP and you are at a decent orbit (200 km), will the orbit start to decline?

Immortalcheese Not in KSP the atmosphere ends at 70 km and the orbital mechanics of the game calculates the planets gravity as a single point mass ie center of the planet which means that the orbit would stay perfect even when adding to it, though ever time you dock you may knock it slightly or even use RCS. It would be cool to have a mod which would simulate the thermosphere so you have to maintain orbits but i think spacecrafts are on rails and dont alter when your not controlling them.

That magnet on the docking ports, can it be disabled or made less powerful? I've experienced that it slams into dock, and rips the station apart, especially when one vessel has much higher mass than the other, no matter how slow I dock.

I redownloaded my game because I had way to many mods. But now when I ever I add new mods some don't work or I have to many and the game crashes. Can u upload your mod list please

Ok will try I'm going to have to go through my favorite mods and see if they work properly with the new version but here is a short list: Kerbal engineer redux MechJeb Docking alignment tool B9 aerospace (has awesome parts) KAS (Kerbal attachment system) Inferno robotics EVA follower (don't know if it's supported any more but it used to allow kerbals to follow the Kerbal you are controlling but only on the surface and set waypoints for kerbals to walk without having to be in control of them) Camera tools (gives you cinematic flybys of your spacecraft) Environmental enhancement mod (mainly for the clouds These are my main favorite mods I've used others before but as you know the more you add the slower the game will run.

PLEASE HELP ME ORB8TER. Whenever I dock onto the space station with the robotic arm (docking port jr.) everything goes well. When I undock with the robotic arm, I create an explosion destoying the guiding system on the Arm and its docking port. The port on the station does not explode. +Epic Derezzed Not sure sounds like a glitch? If you are controlling from the station after you undock select the robotic arm docking port and control from here button then undock, if you are controlling the robotic arm then select control from here on the station. I normally get weird explosions when parts are clipped then detach from vessel so they collide.

+Forrest May The only advise is add Venor rcs to the 4 sides of the main rocket tank on top and bottom then use rcs at launch should help you with the gravity turn

+Brandon OBrien First time I heard of a Misaligned Command Module??? Is it the command module is not pointing up? Try adding a probe core on top and setting as the root part.

I followed the exact design that you did on the video. (AT least I think I did) It was difficult to understand which part was being selected and then why the ascent stage was flipped upside down. But I followed the design, but I am yet to get it into space successfully.

AviationFreak#1 Aerodynamics you have to keep your rocket pointing as close to the center of the yellow marker on the av ball as possible while still doing your gravity turn slowly it takes some practice, when your high enough the air will be thinner and wont matter as much. Also if you rocket is wobbling then that can cause a lot of problems thats what I normally get
