The Mikado in the US was based on a locomotive built by Baldwin for use in Japan. The emperor of Japan was referred to as the Mikado hence the name Mikado for the 2-8-2 wheel arrangement. The proper pronunciation is [məˈkädō] with the last 4 letters spoken all at once and not broken up. Check out the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta named "The Mikado" to hear the correct pronunciation.

I have the Big Mike running all of Alarka - it has the power to control a full set down hill. But as you're finding it can be a bit thirsty on the long runs. For main freight I'm running a C55+C46, and that's still not enough for the Topton grade (I've run out of water multiple times), I even have to split a train to sections of 1200ton or less (inc loco weight!). When you unlock Andrews, you get a yard there and Silva, so the deliveries are split, you only have to handle half the deliveries from each end - still not sure if that's a good thing!

I found that the berkshire is a monster that can haul 2000 tons at 20 mph up to alarka jct from bryson. Didnt test it out but i think she could do 2500 or more.

Not sure if you know this but the reverser acts almost like a clutch and gearbox on steam locomotives, you can get more power out of a steam locomotive if you start off with about 20-30% on the reverser and full power on the regulator, helps to get moving on an grade or switching heavy cuts of cars in the yard. Hope that helps.

So... after stalling a couple of times on grades myself, I looked up a formula to help with what power demands I need for grades. You have to do your 4lbs of rolling resistance x tonnage equals Tractive Effort needed to move that tonnage. 4x2427=9708. Then to find your TE for grade it's 20 x tonnage x grade + the rolling resistance. 20x2427x1.3+9708. (East of Bryson has a 1.3%for just a little bit). that should equal needing about 72,810 of Tractive Effort, so technically there is no engine that could pull this in game. I'm not sure how accurate this formula actually is and I don't know how accurate this would translate to Railroader, but it hasn't proven me wrong yet. If anybody has a better formula for this, I am open for them!!

You can see which cars have brakes Set by 'mousing' over each one. If there's an "@" after the designation on the top line, then the brake is Set. Ctrl Click to select and Release.

Ive been on the game since i got it and i will say its fun and i love it, some things that could i think could make the game a little bit better would be wheel slip when you give it the beans but also it does feel like a more arcady game.

How would/do you deal with passenger service to Alarka Jct. when Alarka and/or Fontana bridge is open to Natahala? Do passengers only enter/embark at platforms?

It may change in the future but right now you'd have to visit all stations so down and back up the Alarka branch

@@KerboOnYT I’ve done this by running a longer “main” passenger train running from Whittier to Andrews (I haven’t decided to buy the Class 1 trackage to Sylva yet). I put every city on the line, INCLUDING Cochran and Alaska Depot. Then I run a passenger train between Alarka and Alarka Jct with all stops between Alarka Jct and Andrews checked off. I set it so both trains arrive at Alarka Jct about the same time. When they are both at the Junction station, I remove all but Cochran and Alarka Depot from the passenger stops list on the Alarka-Alarka Jct train, and also remove Alarka Depot and Cochran from the passengers list on the train to Andrews. When I click on the Passengers tab for the Alarka Jct station and it’s kind of fun to watch passengers all transferring from train to train. Once all the transfers have taken place, send the main train in its way and use the eye at the Jct to turn back to Alarka, stopping at Cochran on the way. Returning from Andrews it’s the same in reverse: all stations are given as destinations for the Andrews-Whittier “main train” (I use an Atlantic on that) and for the train out of Alarka depot, only Cochran, Alarka Jct and all stations between Alarka Jct and Whittier are listed. When the two trains meet at Alarka Jct (one on each side of the wye) I remove all destinations between Alarka Jct and Whittier from the Alarka branch train, and ADD Cochran and Alarka Depot to let passengers getting off the main train that the Alarka branch passenger train (using a ten wheeler) is returning down the branch to those towns, and, again, remove Alarka and Cochran from the passenger stops on the main train. Once the passengers transfer, let ‘em both go. It’s working reliably for me. -Steve

Hey question for you, do you get a penalized if you do not deliver cars that are full everyday or is it ok to wait until you have a bunch to move them all at once?

If you look at your contract you'll see what percentage bonus you get for same day delivery, one day, two day, etc. I don't know if reputation is harmed, but you definitely get paid less

I have a question how do you activate the Robertson gap for delivering empty hoppers to the mine to be loaded with Coal do you have to load the mine with supplies before that can happen I tried to spawn the loads on the hoppers both two bay and three bay hoppers it only showed the loads to all the coal towers

​@@TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan You won't use your own cars. You need to deliver mining supplies in order for the mine to start functioning. The mine will then order empty hoppers from the interchange when it needs them

Hold Shift+? and then it will show under mouse pointer. The camera has to be pretty close to the track.

Kerbo is right. Also the route map found on Discord shows the major grades and percentages (and in which directions). Worst is out of Nantahala towards Topton it reaches 4.5%
