This is interesting stuff, but if Lesley Manville's description of Mike Leigh's working method is entirely honest (and there's no reason to believe it isn't) I must ask: How on earth can Leigh get away with claiming sole writer's credit on his movies? Sounds like everyone's doing an equal amount of work.

I think he is the final decision maker on everything that makes it to the film. And I suppose he is the one navigating every "participator" during the forming of the film to begin with. Also if the entire thing is unqiuely his process then the credit must also be given to him . Also also all writers are influenced by a lot of people, writings and life in general so who is to say how much credit is to be demanded by whom

Because he writes the script. Imagine you write an article where you quote different people. Still you are the writer.
