On this episode of Street You Grew Up On, Kerry Washington and Marlon Wayans head to 9th Avenue and W 16th Street in New York City. His apartment in the Fulton Projects was home to Marlon, his parents, and 9 of his brothers and sisters. Yep. 9. Although it was often times chaotic, crowded and the toilet paper was constantly low, he was always surround by a lot of love. Most of his time was spent in “The Middle” which was the courtyard of the projects and the center of his universe. The Wayans Family is comedy royalty, and it was an honor and privilege to get to hear the stories of where that legacy begins.
About Street You Grew Up On: Simpson Street is where our journey begins. It’s the street that Kerry Washington’s mom grew up on in The Bronx, NY. Through this social series, Kerry Washington interviews artists, influencers and industry experts to uncover their origin stories, amplify our common humanity and affirm the value of every individuals' journey, beginning with the “street you grew up on...”

It was nice to hear Marlon acknowledge the importance of the younger generation picking up the mantle and keeping in contact with other family members. A lot of times we get so consumed with our individual lives and lose track of the need to maintain a connection with family. Sweet interview👏🏽

When that picture went viral more Wayans came out the woodwork on social media. Sad they were unable to make it because of work. I was like dam, this family can start a new state.

I was Marlons nextdoor nieghbor and frend for 20 years. We grew up together and would breakdance in our hallway on the 5th floor every night. His parents were wonderful. His dad Howell worked filling up the 25 cent toy vending machines and would give me keychain cap guns and plastic rings . Great memories. RIP to misses Wayans.

Awww when Marlon talked about his Mom on the window pane watching her kids playing outside, I immediately thought of Crooklyn. Its crazy how, maybe to them, their 1000 sq 4 bedroom was "poor like", but now in 2022, i wish i could afford a brownstone apartment like that in NY. Amazing interview!

This interview was awesome!! His Mother & My Mother sounds the same when it comes to a Mother's Love for her children. We had to be in the house when the street lights came on didn't matter how old you were. When we couldn't go out she would put on a show for us sitting down & being quiet while having a pound cake baking in the oven because she didn't want HER cake to fall ♡♡ LoL My Mother will be 97 on the 26th and she still keeps us laughing but will tell you off in a hot minute. Love this Family (especially Kim) Sincere condolences go out to the Wayans Family. Thank you Both for this interview.

I think it depends on who the person is. You tend to adapt to the personality of the person you talking to. Me and my sister took care of a women who acted different to us. With me she was kinda quiet and calm because that's my personality. And with my sister she was loud and good acting. Because my sister was hood and ghetto acting. My sister told me the that our client personality with her was her real personality.

I first saw The Street You Grew Up On last week. Your mother was your guest. I'm back in Jersey six years now after being in CA 32 years so I'm rediscovering the state and surrounding areas. I was curious about the Bronx so I told my sister we were going to take a drive to NY. We cruised to the Bronx on New Year's eve. It was hard to find a bathroom after our drive there so I bought a slice of pizza to use the facilities. We googled Simpson Street and drove over. We checked out the neighborhoods looking at the lights and marveling at a community that was new to us. Then we drove back to Jersey. Awesome guests and interviews! Keep up the great work!
