I had inadvertently found this issue that was also being had by some others. This is a knife that many of us were waiting about 8 months for. There are some minor things I don't like and one thing that I feel might be an engineering issue.
Let me know in the comments as far as what you think for what I found if you might be carrying this knife left handed or without the pocket clip.

Definitely a thing with the copper Natrix. There needs to be an actual locating pin for the sub-framelock, rather than using the pocket clip screws. I will also be covering this issue with my in depth review. Or maybe a disassembly video.

just a thought, why not remove the second screw and move it to the outbound pocket clip hole? So you have a screw in the 1 and 4 holes.....does that make sense? That way the sub frame lock is fastened to the furthest holes and that load is less likely to shift. give it a try, see if it makes a diff.

Disassemble, and there is a cover plate that houses the assist. Open that and you can clean that area and you will be able to see the contact points where it rubs. Grease and reassemble. Thanks for sharing this issue. I had not realized that the lock was secured by 4 screws, 2 of which are used for the pocket clip in right hand carry. Initially, I was concerned with screws in the soft copper. This also means, while right hand carry anchors the pocket clip screws in steel, left hand carry only anchors the screws only in soft copper.

I removed the clip and luckily didn’t have the detent issue. My fingers are callus and the flipper tab still tears my finger up also. The action on mine felt super gritty and when I took it apart to clean it I found that when they assembled it they tightened the pivot so hard that it dented the steel washers causing the grittiness. After some filing of the flipper tab and polishing the washers I’m relatively happy with the knife.

@f1yerondirt
@f1yerondirt 5 жыл бұрын
Blade Banter I think the majority of the issues are in the machining process. By looking at my example the flipper gimping isn’t cut evenly and the end of the tab is like a razor blade, they had to tighten the pivot so tight (causing the dented washers)because the cutout for the captive pivot is machined too small and the issue you have with the lock bar moving is because the cut out in the scale for the bar is waaay too big.

the sub-frame lock needs the screws from the pocket clip to lock up properly or else it's too loose. the other Natrix models are much more secured in that area, it's just the small copper version. if you're still having issues you can risk bending the frame lock ever so slightly.
@BladeBanter
@BladeBanter 5 жыл бұрын

I've not had an issue with mine and it's setup for left hand carry. The back spacer keeps the liner firmly in the scales at the back of the knife regardless of which side the clip is on. Yes there are holes in the liner on both sides, however my guess was it was never intended to act as a frame lock stabilizer. That would lead me to assume in your case the frame lock is just out of spec a bit.

That is something I didn't mention as the screws would be the correct length if using with the pocket clip. There is a total of 4 screws on the clip side the two lower ones are a tad shorter and would need those to have it work left handed or without the pocket clip.
@SteveKluver

Well I'm having a little trouble, getting my head wrapped completly around this issue, @@BladeBanter. I'll watch the video again, later. And learn more, during tomorrow's Baz video. But is what I was thinking, as to the screw length. Is not how long they are, or I should say, how far they go in. When a clip is not used on the left side. But when a clip is used, when going lefty. If I'm following this correctly? When the clip is mounted right-side. Those screws pull double-duty. In order to do that. They have to be longer (going through the clip, scales, and into the lock-bar), than what would be needed, on the non-lockbar side. Which tells me. When going left, with the clip. The screws then poke in a little too far? Which of course has nothing to do with the dentent. But may point to more numbness, on Kershaw's part. Maybe though. They made the scale slightly thicker on the show side, to make up for the screw length needed, on the other side?

@@BladeBanter Coming from a Customer Service background, I guess you always have to be wary when a customer says that what they did should not have affected the device. In this case, it shouldn't. I feel the two screws that are left holding the lock frame are just a little too close to accurately hold it where it needs to be. Tolerances for the detent are very small and any deviation can throw it off. That is what we see here. Remove the clip, and the lock bar is able to move the slightest bit, throwing it off. If the screws were a bit further apart, they might be able to anchor it successfully.

Honestly there is the "Kizer Theta" and it's not at all available here in Europe but I couldn't bring myself to order it at knifecenter and then pay shipping to austria plus the 20% tax.. hmm so I am not even sure what's my next knife is. I do currently have some Bestech Knives to check of which two are nice. One of them nice enought to buy. I am talking around the Issue because if you gave me $300 and told me to buy I knife I would probably need to retreat for a while to check out what I want if that makes any sense. What about you?

I can't speak to the detent issue I haven't removed my pocket clip. However I find the copper Natrix very difficult to open using the flipper. Out of the box it seems to require a lot of force and between that and the jimping issue you brought up I developed a bit of a blister on my index finger. I put some CLP on the pivot and that has helped some but of the seven Kershaw flippers I own it is by far the most difficult to deploy. It's a beautiful knife and I intend to keep it but I'm open to constructive suggestions on how I might improve the deployment, keeping in mind I'm among the least mechanically adept men on the planet.
@BladeBanter
@BladeBanter 5 жыл бұрын
This may seem like a silly question but does it work better in your left hand? The reason I ask is the lock bar is fairly sensitive to pressure and in holding it I found myself with my finger on the lock bar. If the detent is that bad without taking it apart you could try to lubricate the detent ball to see if that helps the disengagement.
@markpolley8844

@@BladeBanter Actually as I was working to break it in I was changing it from hand to hand and found it did deploy more easily left handed.
@BladeBanter
@BladeBanter 5 жыл бұрын
If that's the case then it is partially hand placement. Due to the size of the knife it's not natural in how you need to hold it in the right hand, to not touch the lock bar. Glad the other suggestion worked too.

I have this knife and after the second day I noticed the blade developing up and down movement when the knife is closed. Its not a ton but it is noticeable. Lock up seems fine when its opened. But its annoying to go to flip the knife open and you feel the blade play on the flipper tab. I dont own any other kershaws but my ZT's and other flippers feel rock solid when closed and have no movement. I had wondered if disassembling it cleaning and reassembling would help but I dont want to have warranty issues so I have not. I emailed the seller and kershaw and waiting to hear back from them.

There is a slight adjustment that could be made to the sub frame lock. You would take the pocket clip off, then the screws under it would be loosened. Make sure the detent is seated and push down and toward the handle and tighten the 2 screws and put the clip back.

@@BladeBanter So I decided to give it a shot and take off the clip and tighten the 2 screws under it. But it turns out they are tight as heck. The 2 clip screws were also tight. So I just put the clip back on as I don't want to further mess with it. It still has the same issue and I have not heard anything from either the vendor or Kershaw yet.

The edge on mine arrived dull and very misground. That was very disappointing, but could be fixed. The deal breaker is the detent rock. It isn't even close to being broken in and there is a good (or more accurately, bad) amount of detent rock. This will only get worse and develop into an annoying rattle. I was really excited to get this one and am now extremely disappointed. I know that they had it made in Chine to reduce costs, but should have charged a little more and produced it in the US. I am returning it.
@BladeBanter
@BladeBanter 5 жыл бұрын
That rock can be adjusted out, if your referring to the free travel the blade has in the closed position. It would be taking the pocket clip off loosening the two screws and pushing in and down on the Lock bar, tightening it back up. This doesn't excuse the play but can be corrected to see if you still wanted to keep it around.

Did you know that China most likely are better making knives than the US? Many knives designed and located in various countries are made in China. In fact, some of my best knives are high end and made in China. What you are most likely referring to is the scummy companies that make copies of popular items. But when it comes to legit work, China know what they are doing.

Engineering? Really? So, if it's engineering, how do you explain the VAST majority of these knives have no issue? Have you heard of quality control? Or machine operator error? Or out-of-spec tooling or machine setup? Two screws securing an element hold that element in a straight line. However, if one of the holes is not round or larger than the other, you no longer can hold it straight. Engineering is fine, manufacturing is not. Period.
@BladeBanter

Thanks for the comment. I would say that the mast majority of the Copper Natrix users are right handed and leave the screws in place. Removing the pocket clip shouldn't affect the sub frame lock. That's why I stated it on that way as the materials and tolerance should be part of the process. Appreciate the comment and point of view.

I think import kershaw's are junk, not because they're Chinese made it's because I'm 0-4 with them in the last year or so, including the atmos everyone loved. The screw probably pushes the lock bar over ever so slightly, remove it and the detent ball doesn't line up right anymore, it's exactly the kind of little tolerance problem I've come to expect from them.

I pre-ordered as well, and got Mine around 8 months later as well. I really like the knife,,, However, the sub-frame-lock is 'ajusted' by the screws that hold in the pocket clip.. and yes, if you want to left hand carry the clip, it will be a useless flipper. I still like it as I am a 'righty' but for having to have all of us wait 8 +++ months for it, so they could 'get it just right' , it was poorly designed. I had reserves about buying a kershaw, and think I am Highly unlikely to buy a kershaw ever again... even though I do like this copper natrix for what it is... too much hype and too much of a wait for such terrible design flaws...
