This whole film is testament to Ken Loach's directing skills. The fact that the late great Colin Welland & Brain Glover were previously teachers (as was Barry Hines who wrote the novel and co-wrote the screenplay) lent some authenticity to their roles.

My schooldays - early '60s. We had a junior Games Master whom Brian Glover could certainly have drawn his inspiration from. Junior school cricket (which I was hopeless at). Standing in the deep field, trying to stop a boundary, I stuck my foot out to intercept the ball - but on the rough grass it bounced and missed my foot. Games Master was watching the match, came over, and said, "You use your HANDS to stop the ball. If I ever see you try with your foot again, I'll march you off to the first-aid room and cane you." That warning sank home all right - and it was no idle threat. On another occasion, rugby this time (luckily I wasn't involved), he did indeed cane an entire school XV after learning that they'd misbehaved in the changing room after an away match at another school. Four strokes each, with the rod. In public. Talk about brutality! But Glover's performance is something else, I guess. Selfishness and egotism in school sport - I'm not sure about that happening in my days.

The teacher who Brian Glover played,was based on a PE teacher from my school,Kirk Balk secondary school in Barnsley,Mr Ronnie Hallam. Ronnie was a great teacher and a lovely bloke but,would definitely barge you off the ball at football and joy give a free kick,unlike if you did it to him ! Also partial to bowling the odd bouncer at you when you were rubbish at cricket 😂 Was loved by all students,those who excelled or struggled. Says it all.
@geoffpoole48316 күн бұрын
I had a work colleague who was from Barnsley and Brian Glover was one of his teachers. Brian Glover the teacher was nothing like the PE teacher he portrayed so brilliantly in Kes.
