My grandfather was General Omar Bradley's personal driver and if he we alive today he could some stories of the "old man" as my grandfather called him. I'll try to find a local newspaper article (1971) of my grandfather's trip to Hollywood to honor Gen. Bradley on "This Is Your Life." I'll see if I can find a little story from the article I can post. I'm looking for pictures/videos of my grandfather and Bradley. I saw him at the 6:33 mark of the video in the jeep with Ike & Bradley.

Montgomery and Patton weren't nice men, but great soldiers, which is what counts. But there is no reason a nice man can't also be a great soldier and an example was Omar Bradley. Now, like Montgomery (who was his boss as the Land Force Commander in Normandy) he could 'see' the totality of the battlefield, something for which George Patton was unsuited, his talents lay in armoured speed and exploitation. It is true that Bradley grew to dislike Monty (and also Patton) post-Normandy (when Anglo-American rivalry and recriminations intensified) but during Normandy he himself wrote that he couldn't have served under a more 'judicious' Commander. Excellent post, and spot on. Bradley's real beef with Montgomery came after Montgomery had to take over his armies in the Bulge. It was somewhat of a humiliation for Bradley and that was the real start of it.

Bradley was ten times the general, and twenty times the man, that either George Patton or Dugout Doug MacArthur were. To him, his men always came first- and that is far more valuable in a leader than being a prima donna or publicity seeker. Courageous, devoted, and compassionate, he knew what it took to lead citizen soldier through the hardships of war. Army Chief of Staff George Marshall knew the worth of this fine officer, and exploited his attributes to America's benefit.
