What I am “chasing” is lower body fat percentage I feel my weight is fine. I’m 5’ 5 3/4” and 125 and 26.2 body fat and have plateaued with my body fat. Although that is down from 140lb and 39% BF when I started 2 years ago. I had dropped to 24% at one point and then back up to 26.2%. I’m not so focused on the numbers as I am the obvious cellulite all over my entire body. I walk regularly for exercise although I do have a knee injury right now and cannot do that. Do you have any suggestions for making my body burn the body fat more?

Thank you. This brings a lot of clarity!! ❤ I'm more conviced that a keto diet it's not "as much fat as you want" as I believed years ago, or "as much calories as you want". In my experience moderation and avoiding snacking have been a game changer.

Thank you Dr. I also think it is counter productive to just keep increase your ketone by taking high amount of fat. I am in a low carb diet but I keep protein level at 0.8 - 1 grams/lean body mass, carbs under 20g also combine this with 24hr of solid food fasting ( Intake water + Black Coffee) one day per week (Saturday). During normal days I consume 1300-1500 cal. my maintenance level is 1780 cal. This method so far is working great! Exercise: 6k steps / day, 4 days low intensity weight lifting at home (heavy low rep = 8). I found this diet sustainable because of two main reasons. 1: I love meat & sea food. 2: I have digestion problem with Carbs so low carb diet reduced my problem by a lot. I have tried many different diet plan this is by most easier to follow.

My ketone levels are between 2 and 2.5 and I'm not seeing much weight loss but thanks to your video I just realized that it's because I am consuming too much fat and not burning enough stored fat. I resistance train also so I will up my protein and lower my fat intake. Thanks a million!! Hoping to see a drop in my ketone levels but not too low.

VERY technically informative video. Thank you. I've been eating keto now for 70 days and I've lost 14 lbs. I am now at a weight that I wish to maintain. So, I adjusted my carbohydrate/protein/fat intakes to hault the weight loss, but maintain the other benefits of a keto diet. I've never chased keytone levels, although I do test via the blood a few times a week. My levels average about 0.5. I see it this way - I achieved my weight goal, and on a side note, my blood pressure is normal, glucose levels are good, typical joint pain is gone, and I feel great.

You’ve really cleared up some things for me! I’ve been eating a keto diet for 3 yrs, and can’t get the last 20-30 lbs off. I just bought a mojo meter and trying to use that to find out what is going on. I’m going to stop taking my early morning fasting glucose and ketones. I’m an RN, we always take a fasting early morning glucose for our patients, even knowing about the Dawn effect. Your video here is the clearest explanation I’ve found about protein, fats, carbs and ketones. Some common explanations out there were not making sense to me. Your advice to “chase what result you are after “ is VERY refreshing to say the least. Thank you.

I found that a 36-hour fast works well for myself to bring me back into ketosis when I hit a weight loss plateau and remain on the plateau for several days without results. Or more often, when I've kicked myself out of ketosis again. It's often difficult to know when one has transitioned into ketosis, except for the loss of appetite and less bloated feeling. But it isn't always obvious when you've had some carbs but don't know if you've overdone it or not. I've ordered a GKI monitor to help me understand and recognise the different states of being.

One of my life purposes has been having QUALITY OF LIFE. My pursuit is better BS control and weight loss. I have CKD and last week I visited with my kidney specialist. She was impressed by my significant reduction in Creatinine levels & increased eGFR after 2 months of LC/IF. This is by far the most common sense video explaining the approach to keto. Thank you. I don’t want to pop MCT caps and drink keto in a can all day. I’m a faster and even though I was formerly eating lots of carbs and am borderline pre diabetic (for now) it’s been fairly easy to drop to 20-30 carbs a day and eat 1 or 2 meals in a 3-4 hour window. I just don’t like measuring the ketones and focusing on that aspect. I’m dropping weight and now feel it’s ok to just do what I’m doing.

Great video! thanks for helping me to understand. It seems everything I read is just completely opposite. I've been on keto over 5 years. I've always had 1.0- 1. 5 readings, and recently in the past 2 months my numbers are below 0.5 I can't raise them for the life of me. I thought I was gonna have to supplement with those expensive ketone supplements. Or drink BPC, which I hate. The only thing that has changed is I started running again in January. I've always worked out with weights, but haven't been a big cardio fan. I love to run, and I haven't done it in years, but its helped me feel so much better. I thought I read somewhere that exercise makes ketone levels higher, and that you're suppose to always test in the am. In the evening before dinner I'm at 0.9 I dont fast much because I need my energy to workout and run. Your video really helped me because I thought I was eating too much but I'd rather have energy to run and workout than be over 1.0 I clicked on another video and all she was doing was making a commercial for you to buy expensive exogenous ketones that are a waste. I've been low carb since 2000, did Atkins for a long time and spent most of it in ketosis and never needed any fancy supplements.

I've been following a Keto lifestyle in earnest for about 8 months now. I've also been trying to get as much information about Ketosis, the effects of fasting, Autophagy etc. I see a little conflict about exercise, I believe Drs Fung and Ekberg suggest that keeping exercise light while fasting prevents stressing the body and therefore avoiding the release of Cortisol, which in turn signals a release of Insulin. They suggest that keeping one's pulse rate below 120BPM, so just walking without speed-marching will do this, for me, at least. Your explanations make good sense to me, however. Today I am at 66 hours of a prolonged fast. My Ketone level at 1100 was 1.0 via a blood test. Interestingly, the Keto strip suggested a negative ketone reading. Weight loss has continued, though I am wanting as much Autophagy as I can get too.
@douglasx69155 жыл бұрын
This is a great video. What sooooo many people fail to understand is that if you have been keto for several months AND you are at your proper body weight, your blood ketones levels will naturally drop because your body has been optimized to using ketones as a fuel substrate. A fun test to do is to take a short nap in the afternoon and then immediately test your ketones levels. If you see a significant rise in ketones, that means your body is actively burning ketones for fuel. Because your metabolism drops during the nap, your ketones will rise until you wake up and start moving around again.

I think the people who are pushing higher fat and lower protein are equally focused on habits and the psychological aspect of a keto diet, which I didn’t hear you mention in this video at all. In my personal experience, it’s easiest to kick my sugar addiction by eating higher fat and avoiding exercise at first, because exercise will make me crave carbs. After a few days I’m craving bacon and avocado instead of donuts.

My blood keytone levels are usually 0.4 and only hit close to 2.0 when I fast 48+ hours. My carbohydrate intake is on the order of 30 +/- 5g (body weight 240lbs.) My weight loss has been very slow, though I've dramatically increased my exercise the last 3 months. My blood sugar levels also concern me, in the 120s most of the time. After 36 hours of fasting I got a 105 reading. My diet fats are mostly from meat and some from fish (salmon). I supplement with MCT, flax, pomegranate, macadamia nut, fish, cod liver, and pistachio oils. - about 4 tbsp a day. I also supplement with whey, egg, and various vegetarian proteins. I'm hoping that my readings will stabilize and weight loss continue a bit faster over the next few months.

I’m not on keto and I am burning fat and getting rid of water weight but I also want to maintain my muscle mass if not gain more muscle as I lose fat and I don’t think cutting my protein intake will help me with that lol. I’m also doing omad so I think for me having a rich protein meal is beneficial (I also make sure I have lots of leafy greens and other things for nutrition) I’m still learning though but this has been such a mind opening experience for me.. I’ve never watched what I eat and had next to zero knowledge on how to be healthy. I used to binge drink alcohol and after that binge eat junk food and I’ve done a 360 and changed everything and I feel so much better. I need to find tips on what to do while menstruating and getting sick because I’m not sure how to prepare for those things yet but I’ll get there.

@Cee Gee There is a lot of mis information out there about this subject, or just plain BS, as stated in this video don't become to hung up about Ketone numbers. Have a look at the Glucose Ketone Index, this may help you learn a bit more. Getting your blood sugar level under control is more important and the key. Cut out rubbish highly processed food and sugar, and alcohol and stop snacking, these steps will help you get your blood sugar levels down and stable. And sleep, you must have a regular and good sleep pattern, this is often over looked. Start by getting a good blood glucose/ketone monitor, and also check your blood glucose after eating whole carbs to see the affect on your levels. But getting fat adapted takes time, despite what you may read, depending on your past lifestyle can take 3-6 months, so don't expect over night miracles. It takes time but does work, but you also have to incorporate exercise. Hope this helps. 😍😍😍

I have used the Freestyle Libre glucose/ketone reader. I have used the continuous glucose reader and it told me a lot about my eating habits. Low blood glucose results in elevated ketones. I found that morning dawn effect of increased glucose resulted in lower blood ketones. After fasting for 18-23 hours my ketones are the highest and I can get up to 1.7 mil/litre and at this time my blood glucose was in the low 4s. During this time I lost about 2 pounds per week. The CGM showed me how my blood glucose increased after a meal and it never went about 6.0..... a CGM is an amazing tool for understanding your eating habits and how excersize affects your blood sugars. I strongly recommend a CGM for learning more about how your habits affect your blood sugars

Since starting a keto diet at the beginning odf the year i have lost nothing ! All the symtoms quite severely, in ketosis, and no weight loss. Im going to reduce the added fat, try and get sleep and stress addressed (not easy!) And see if i can finally get some results. I do feel better and am aiming for further health benefits and at 57 im hoping im not too old for a new lease of life. . Its easy to do 18/6 fasting but ive got 75kg to lose and not a pound has shifted. Excercise is very difficult with a scoliosed lower back and bursitis in my hip so causes a lot of pain, in fact a reason to want the weight off in the hopes i can get walking again. Hoping i can still do this way of living, lose weight (and not be stuck in a catch 22) finally to get into that sweet spot where its working. Its a long time with no weight loss so thanks for this. Heres hoping.

If you fill with fat, you'll burn less body fat. Depends on what your goal is...maintain weight or lose weight.

Dr Attia on The drive shows that eating high fat he lost weight and other bio -markers were shown to be great on a high fat diet ..fat keeps you full and satietied fat does not raise your insulin ..

@@emgarden I read the comment’s “fill with fat” in a sort of top up with fat, which if you’re prioritising protein (as opposed to fat), then you’ll be eating less fat than the 75% that most recommend - which in turn means you’re more likely to burn body fat. I may be wrong though.

Thank you. A lot of common sense. I've known these facts about ketones for a while, but it's nice to hear someone else say it.

I am new to your channel and I am very impressed with your knowledge on the subject. Started to die 2 weeks ago and lost 17 pounds. Test my ketone levels for the first time today and I am at 1.5 . Was worried as I was not losing any weight and I felt that I was plateauing. Based on what you're saying I am good, and well on my way to a healthier lifestyle.

Best video I’ve watched to describe ketones and keto WOE! I do have a question though. If you’re supposed to aim for protein, how off can your macros be in order to be considered KETO?

26 month keto here! I’ve only been using my BG monitor and my macros… not really caring about ketones but during this quarantine I’m having a real struggle not putting weight on every month so I broke down and bought a keto meter and now I’m just learning all about it even though I’ve had huge success with keto for two years these last two months have been hard I’m thinking it’s because of the stress in the cortisol not sure but thank you for this video

Not sure where to put this question so I chose this video.... My reason for experimenting with a ketogenic lifestyle is not for weight loss. Mental clarity, anti inflammatory effects, and the healthy aging benefits are my reasons. I have been successfully in ketosis for 4 weeks. A very noticeable change is that I’m am not hungry and weight loss has been a pleasant side affect. But I want to know about supplementation. I bought a ketone supplement but have not opened it yet. Will you explain how to safely use a ketone supplement? Thanks Dr Maggs

Ketone readings can mess with your head. I lost around 10 % body fat and I am now around 13% total body fat and probably single figures SQ body fat. I lift weights and walk 15,000 steps a day and a few sprints and 1 off day a week. On the off day my ketone levels are always above 1 and can go up to 1.8 yet on my training days my ketones range from 0.4- 1.0 even when fasted. This was worrying me as my partner has higher ketone readings and she eats more and more often and doesn’t do much exercise.

Day 9 on keto and have hit 6.2. I'm not aiming at higher ketones, just doing a light keto diet (some salmon, loads of spinach, tons of avocados, a few eggs, feta, halloumi, minimal added oil). Getting a bit worried that the level keeps spiralling higher every day. I just keep the net carbs below 20g. Weight drop 5.5kg so far (weight loss is the goal). Have just come off a vegan diet so perhaps it's the sudden change from high carb to almost no carb. No real "dawn effect". Always a temporary (around one hour) drop after sport. Not certain where this is going, but it's an interesting experiment so far.

I tested my levels today for the first time after a couple weeks of keto diet and it was 2.0. Winning! I wasn’t even sure that I was in ketoses. My boyfriend says my breath doesn’t smell, so that is good, but at the same time I was wondering if I never got there and I was a little disappointed that it didn’t smell.

Thank you very much for this video. I do watch some of the videos you spoke of and glean what might help me. But I simply couldn't understand how adding fat would help me burn my stored body fat after being on Keto for a while. This really helped.

I find that my ketones do lower after exercise but my blood glucose gets higher due to that stress affect. Once my blood goes down my ketones go back up. It always goes hand in hand. If I get stressed my blood glucose goes up and in turn my ketones go down because my body is feeding off of the glucose.

My fasting glucose is 106-116 and my ketones show low and never higher than a rare .7. Almost no carbs and quality food but I am losing the puffiness even though the weight is coming down by a pound at a time and fluctating one down, two up, etc. Almost pain free now
