@@briangardner3418 I like the Shure SM7B for untreated rooms and more spoken word podcast type of work. The NT1A for more clarity and transparency picking up instruments and full breathy voice details. HTH!

Hey I appreciate the job you did here, man. Very very cool. I'm switching to the SM7B from the NT1A as a result of your comparisons. That warmth from the Shure is evident. Thanks again 👊

After a lot of research, I purchased the SM7B for my girlfriend. She’s getting into voice over stuff. Her room isn’t treated, so the SM7B seemed a better choice. I hope I got everything she needs to get started!

As someone that is new and still learning and gathering information before making a purchase I would like to say thank you for this informative video. These both seem to be very common and popular microphones. I realize that microphones can be used in many different ways, but generally speaking though for the mics in this video, would it be fair to say that the SM7B is more geared towards in studio talking/recording and the NT1 more for in studio singing/music recording?

I tend to rap hard at mics in vocal booth. Seems Shure would be better for this? When I use Rode NT1 with the “air” setting on on Scarlett while I rap it seems to distort rap (even if gain is at good level) and lessens rap punch. What do you recc for better energetic rap vocals?

Thanks for the video. I like the Rode NT1. This is where I am at and hope you can help. I going to be doing a 30 minute radio show. I will be recording it ahead of time and sending in an MP3. There are so many recording apps, mixers etc out there that it is very confusing. I do want to be very creative with my program, adding music, sounds, recordings etc. I will have guests at times, so I will need more than one mic. I was looking at the Rodecaster PRO and possibly protools. I may be way off on my choices. That's why I need help. I really appreciate any help you can give me to get started. I don't want to start off with low end equipment. I want it to be sharp from the start.

The only reason I’m thinking of getting the Røde NT1 over the SM7b is the pricing on the SM7b. I may not have a soundproof environment but I can get a full NT1 kit and buy an arm with it for about 370$ while an SM7b with an arm and a cloudlifter would be 660$+ a little too much for me. Do you think it’s worth saving up for the SM7b as I don’t have a soundproof environment or is it not that trivial. Note: I would use my mic for instruments, vocals and live streams.

If you hate the sibilance of the NT1A, you're not going to be happy with the NT1. SM7B would certainly resolve the sibilance issue.

like how you have to turn the gain all the way up to hear anything on the Shure... Why would anyone pick that over the Nt1 I have no clue... Unless there's Bulldozers outside your window and noises all around do yourself a favor and get the better mic lol.

06:15 - that’s a low pass filter. Not a high pass filter. btw, I own both of these microphones and love them both. I use them both daily for two different uses (each on a different system).
@WarLooch

@@jottahreal The SM7B is recommended by Shure themselves to be used for both vocals and instrumentals (they even showed us live demos of them pointing a SM7B right at amp heads). As always, if you know how to EQ then make sure to set both switches on the back of the mic to flat. If you're not familiar with EQ'ing, then maybe use the high pass filter switch on the back of the mic (if not mic'ing a bass guitar). Personally I prefer a good old fashioned SM57 for mic'ing a guitar (what Shure calls the SM7B's predecessor), but if you're looking to do studio recording, then there are far better choices out there - just not budget-friendly, however the studio sound engineer should hopefully offer a good selection to use.

Thats a high pass filter because it is letting the high frequencies pass through and eliminate low freqz. High pass filter = remove low end Low pass filter = remove top end

Using a condenser like the NT-1 for live voice application like podcast, streaming etc is like tryina butcher a pig with a scalpel...It's a high precision tool made to work well in specialized environments that allows it to shine, like a studio! It's got almost ZERO noise rejection, picks up every single hum, buzz, squeak, breath around it EVEN in well treated rooms. On the other hand, dynamics like the SM7b, are designed for loud surroundings, that's why they're the exclusive choice for concerts, live events etc, because they are really good at rejecting everything that's more than a few inches or feet away from them. Condensers are designed to sound FLAT, clean, honest, for leverage in post production, whereas dynamics tend to warm up and enhance the sound from the get go because they are used LIVE, where post processing ain't always an option. I've been dealing with lots of mics over the years and always came to the same conclusion: DYNAMICS = LIVE VOICE, CONDENSERS = RECORDED VOICE...no other way around it. That being said, the SM7b, in my experience, is just an overpriced, overrated, gain hungry asset. It will NOT work with just a regular USB powered interface, for live broadcast, it needs shit loads of gain and without a good pre amp, you'll get some nasty hiss if you software boost it. Go for the newer MV7 or the highly proven SM58 and save yarself about $500!

Hey guys, I tend to buy the Rode NT1 for home office and gaming, but I worry about the sensitivity. Because of the heat, I run an 18-inch fan 2m away from me and I worry that the microphone is taking all that noise/wind as well. Any recommendations? I'm planning to get my computer move to another room using extension cables, with that I should be able to run only AC in my office without a fan.
