This was a very interesting interview. There is no doubt in my mind that Kevin Brittingham is brilliant and innovative. His explanation of the 1:3 twist rate for 8.6 BLK simply makes sense. You are limited to linear velocity of 1,100 fps (or less) for subsonic. So you go with the heaviest bullet you can use to maximize energy on target, but that introduces stability problems. So you spin the bullet faster. “Rotational energy” isn’t significant from a kinetic standpoint. However, it IS significant in terms of bullet expansion and tissue damage. I suspect that no one anticipated that side benefit from stabilizing the heavy, subsonic bullet, but Kevin saw it and grabbed onto it with both hands. “There shouldn’t be QD suppressors. That’s dumb.” Contrarian? Yes. Common sense? Yes. How much longer does it take to remove or install a suppressor if the muzzle has a tapered shoulder? Very little, especially compared to all of the other things you need to change on your rifle when you remove a suppressor. You need to re-zero the rifle first of all. Unless you’re running a bolt action, you need to adjust the gas system. Then you have all of those halfassed connection devices. Do you really want to shoot that rifle un-suppressed with that *thing* on the muzzle that isn’t a good flash hider or muzzle brake? No That said, “Pay $3,000 and get the last 5% out of it” doesn’t fit with the Faxon barrel that comes on an 8.6 BLK Fix. I have a hard time thinking that Q *hasn’t* experienced a lot of quality control problems with Faxon barrels. The rifle overall is great. That barrel probably not so much.

How I see it is Flow through good for autoloading rifles and Baffle good for bolt actions. You don't need a quiet suppressor you just need one that muffles the sound enough for someone not to be able to hone in on the shot. This is coming from a guy who got shot at during a hunting trip.

Just now seeing this podcast. I've never seen the issues with Kevin that others get so bent out of shape about. Yes he is plain spoken, yes he speaks his mind, yes he can be bombastic, yes he's good at marketing. So what! If people's sensibilities are THAT fragile then they probably should limit their exposure to the internet. My take is "influencers" average internet joe, other companies, etc, get their knickers in a knot because Q challenges the notion that just because something has been done a certain way for the last 100 years, is the way it should be done. They aren't afraid of innovation; they aren't afraid of changing the norm or asking why some "rule of thumb" is still in play. I hope Kevin and Q are around and ruffling feathers for many decades to come.

it's essentially just and energy equation and basic math - energy quads to mass times velocity squared so triple the rotational speed going from 1:9 to 1:3 si three times larger rotational speed that results in 9 times larger rotational energy! that energy is instantly dumped into the target when the bullet expands also why the wound cavity opens much larger and the much larger rotational energy helps the bullet expand and you can hear that when hitting game downrange, it's like hitting a drum, it's a similar effect but not the same to the sound an impact on running hogs makes where the reports a good hit is very distinct and sound like hitting a drum - thunk - that effect is a combination of the hog expanding their chest cavity while running and the bullet expanding on impact.

I'm not a Kevin Brittingham fanboy, I think he's intellectually brilliant, but I think he can also be an abrasive prick when it's not necessarily warranted. HOWEVER, when people try to say that the fast twist on a 8.6 blackout doesn't affect energy: all you have to do is TEST it to see it does have an effect. And the test is easy: load two identical rounds and fire them at two identical gel blocks from identical with the only difference being twist rate. One looks like a bullet passed through and caused damage (like normal) the other looks like a blender was fired through the gel. Especially with solid copper bullets that hold together extremely well, they're turning and cutting constantly inside a target. With subsonic ammo you're hard limited to what velocity you can reach so that number is constant, so the only option you have to achieve more terminal effect is either bullet construction or bullet behavior (twist would apply to behavior) From a physics standpoint it HAS to cause more energy transfer because it would take more energy to spin a bullet through a target than it would to push it through with less rotational velocity. Physics doesn't lie, and you can't cheat it.
