People are dicks! I’m glad you had a great interaction with him and it’s nice to hear the humanity of these high profile actors. And I agree we have to take risks in life or we just minions serving our fears. So what if it didn’t make a smash at the theater. Some people loved it! And Kevin did what he believed so at least he isn’t living someone else’s dream and he’s got the balls to believe in himself. I wish I had those guts more often in my life! I respect courage in the face of great criticism or financial loss. And your comment was nice to read. Trolls and haters make me laugh to.

Unfortunately the Western is just a very niche genre with a very small but appreciative audience when good ones get made and unless you’re a horror movie with a ton of buzz around it (Longlegs) or a sci-fi (DUNE) or a super hero Marvel movie people just aren’t flocking to theaters these days due to the convenience and comfort of home streaming and most audiences won’t sit through a 3 hour movie unless it’s one of the aforementioned types I listed. I went and saw Horizon in the theater and loved it every second of it but I happen to be its target audience. However I think going to Netflix could be a blessing for it because it will give it a chance to find a home and an audience there where making its money back isn’t a factor because people pay for Netflix subscriptions.

The Box Office is no longer a gauge on the success or failure of a production. Simply because very few people go to theaters anymore. When you consider the $12 to $15 Ticket price and another $10 to $15 for refreshments, per attendee, the Theater is no longer the recreational venue it was.
@WhatsWrongWithTheStreet

Totally agree. Box office numbers don't mean shit. John Carpenter's The Thing was a disaster box office wise. But it has been considered a stone cold classic since it went to home video, which was HBO or Showtime or VHS rental.

Maybe, but Deadpool 3 is about to smash some records. I don't think people want to go see a 3 hour western film in a movie theater. Should have been a limited series. I enjoyed the first one and look forward to the 2nd.

And the fact that a night out at the movies is no longer a cheap evening is why so many of the films we see today are bloated three hour long special effects laden garbage - because people expect a "spectacle" for their money. It's hard to find a 90 minute movie these days except on straight to streaming, or a character piece. NB: I'm not suggesting that Horizon is "bloated three hour long special effects laden garbage".

Horizon LOST $100 Million . That's a massive failure. It took the entire "saga" down with it. That massive cast and crew signed up for 2 more years of work and now they're all out of work.

I watched this in the theater and also purchased it from Prime. The three hours went quickly both times I’ve watched it. The better visual experience is definitely in the theater…and the bigger the screen the better. That said I hope the news that Netflix purchased it is accurate as I want to see the complete saga.

This is great news for me. I'm 74 yrs old and don't do the theater experience anymore. I don't care if it's 3 hrs or 10 hrs, I watch it at my leisure on my 60 in. screen and full surround sound audio, taking pee breaks and snack breaks as I like. Streaming will gather more viewers than going to the movies.

Agreed!!! I’m 53 years old and this has been my preferred way to watch movies for several years now. I have 65” screen and a nice surround system with very comfortable seating, all of my favorite snacks and a choice between two private bathrooms. There was a time when I went to the movies almost every week, now I barely go more than once a year.

Myself and friends were eagerly waiting to see Horizon streaming since it's a 3 hr movie, so we can watch it in the comfort of our homes. I love streaming at home because you can pause, get your food, go to the bathroom and snuggle up on the couch under a blanket. Sooo much better than going to a movie theatre with the threat of covid or violence or just rude people using their phones during the movie. So glad to hear Horizon is already streaming! We will be watching it TONIGHT!!!! 😃

I hope something changes and it does better if you haven’t seen this and you are a fan of westerns please go watch it!!! What worries me about Netflix taking it over other than for one it not being the same experience as the big screen. Seeing Horizon on the big screen in a theater was the best visual experience I have enjoyed in a long time. I was surprised to discover 3 hours passed and that is not because the movie is all action. A lot of love went into making Horizon and its qualities will be appreciated and compared to The Lord of The Rings trilogy by the fourth chapter.

Having worked on streaming contracts, the probable reason Costner went with Netflix was that Netflix (although suspiciously this hasn't shown up in Deadline Hollywood yet. did it actually happen?) tends to purchase the right to stream a co-produced show for a limited amount of time and then rights revert to the prod. co... unlike Amazon who tends to own shows they co-produce outright. So Costner probably likes the idea of owning ALL of Horizon (after it's finished) and being able -- once the Netflix contract has expired -- to ultimately do with it what he wants. I expect to one day see Horizon -- all 12 hours -- on the big screen (with or without Netflix)

They didn’t say he went with Netflix. He hasn’t chose anyone yet. I don’t think he will. They’re just delaying the release of the second film to give more people time to watch the first film. I still expect chapter 2 to get released in the theater in the next couple months. Now, if chapter 2, doesn’t do well, then I can see him selling the rights of chapters 3 & 4 to Netflix

Costner is in my top 3 actors / directors of all time. I hate to say we streamed horizon the other night and the whole family was confused and found it very difficult to follow. I am willing to wait to see if part 2 brings it together but as of now I completely get why it’s a failure in the theaters . It’s not a theater movie. I said after watching this should have been made as a Miniseries and would likely have done much better. 3 one hour shows I think would have come Off better than that 3 hrs of bouncing all over the place and sitting there lost. I still hold hopes for this coming together

I managed to see Part One in my local cinema & thoroughly enjoyed it being a fan of the genre. However, it did feel more like a mini series that would be more suited to streaming. Although I think it would be a shame to not get a chance to see the remaining films in the cinema. It’s a shame that only certain types of films get the full cinematic backing nowadays & that not many chances are taken like the old days.

As a piece of art, Horizon is a sweeping western that deserves to be viewed on the big screen. But the reality of the business side of it is that you're not going to get a huge audience out to the movie theaters these days to watch a 3-hour long western during the summer. I watched Part 1 and it was great, but I understand why it doesn't have the mass appeal of a Marvel movie or even a 90-minute rom-com. Definitely looking forward to watching Part 2, whenever or however it gets released.

Really liked HORIZON. Its a beautiful film, and a great rendition of the wild west. It's good to see a director taking the time to develop a story line, and giving depth to the characters. Kevin Costner is the Western's GOAT

This movie was great I mean 3 hours never went by so fast and I'm anxious to see the rest of it too. Kevin I salute you on yet another job well done and as you can tell the people that went to see your movie or not your fair weather fans were the real deal

3 hours in the theater is too long. I'm a lifetime fan of Costner and am happy to watch and rewatch any of his stuff. I will be sure to watch via streaming and I'm sure it will be wonderful. Blessing is what I think for a movie of this magnitude and in this day and age. People have home theaters and wait for things to stream. Good for Netflix for picking it up.

I think Kevin should bring on board Clint Eastwood. Horizon is a typical Western, which Clint will be perfect to make this to dark anti western. They both work together on Perfect world and still can today...

I went to the theatre to see it and I LOVED IT! I didn't even notice the 3 hours. I was very disappointed when I read the 2nd release was postponed. Now I can't wait to watch it, if it comes out on Netflix. Thankyou Kevin Coster for a great movie. ❤

We went to the box office and saw it. We loved the movie That suppertime is a hard time to go to the movies cause everybody’s busy being outside going on vacation seeing family. And it’s expensive to go to the theaters these days to watch a movie and all the extra stuff you get. I will definitely watch it at home on streaming. Can’t wait to see the rest of the saga ❣️

Three hours IS a very long movie. The big, Blockbuster films of the past, i.e. "The Ten Commandments," "Khartoum," "The Unsonkable Molly Brown," "Paint Your Wagon," "My Fair Lady," etc., were usually that long, but they'd have an Intermission after the first 90 minutes, so people could go to the restroom, get something more to eat and/or drink for the next 90 minutes. Putting his 3-hour movie on Netflix is good for him because people watching at home will be able to pause the movie so they can do what they can't do at a theater, and even though the size of the TV sometimes helps the movie's delivery, and you'll still get the same play as others do with bigger TVs.

Dune 2 was 2 hrs 46 minutes, made $700 million. Oppenheimer was 3 hours, made $975 mil. Horizon is 3 hours and made $27 million. The runtime was NOT the problem.

@@daveclark8337It is when the film is written like a TV show, I can watch dances with wolves and get a complete story in the same time. This is a TV show Costner needs to accept this

My hesitancy in seeing it is that it's a planned 4 part saga. These things don't always pan out and I don't like getting into a story that may never be finished. For instance, I waited until Stephen King finished The Dark Tower novels before I read them. I feel the same way about Horizon. I hope he can finish it and realize it the way he wants it to be. With part one on VOD now, I may rent it because I am very interested in seeing it. A slightly lesser known Costner western is Open Range with Costner and Robert Duval. Very good movie.

I saw it in the theater. I thought it was great. Didn’t seem like 3 hours. But I’m an old guy and grew up with westerns. Younger folks have no taste! And Covid killed the whole theater experience. Also just the cost of going to “the movies” and inflation have made it difficult. I think more people today are more willing to pay to see things on their streaming devices. And a lot of people have big screens at home. Either way it goes, I hope it is finished. I would like to see it.

Kevin Costner does Westerns better than anyone. The problem was that people don't trust movie theaters anymore. I don't, and I was an avid movie goer.

With all these good old streamings and great movies an series, why are we going to wasting our time an money in these trashy movie theaters👎

Multi-part Movies are really suited to a Streaming Service. Once they're all done - many people binge watch the whole thing, staying up all night watching episode after episode. .

I don’t go watch movies in the theatre anymore, way too expensive. Better to watch it from the comfort of my couch where the popcorn is one tenth the price, and the soda is one twentieth the price, I can go to the bathroom (and it’s clean) and never miss a second of the movie. 😁

HORIZON chapter one is a great movie. I watched it twice in theaters. And i will watch it again, hopefully with the other chapters. The furst chapter is already a classic, and the four chapters have the makings of a masterpiece rivalling something like John Ford's cavalry trilogy. Don't confuse box office receipts with aesthetics. These movies will have legs, and will return their investment and more over time. Kubrick's 2001 was universally canned by critics and did not make money at first release but the public kept watching it and it had several re-releases. Now it's a recognised classic and no one remembers the critics because the movie keeps playing on all formats.
